Yes, some games bought outside Steam can run on Steam Deck—but two separate pieces of software are involved. A storefront or launcher such as Heroic helps you sign in to supported stores and install games. Proton, a Windows-compatibility layer built into SteamOS’s Linux environment, may then run a game’s Windows version. Neither step guarantees that a particular game will work, and neither converts a license from one store into another.

What Proton does—and what it does not do

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Many PC games are built for Windows, so they cannot necessarily run on SteamOS as-is. Proton bridges some of that gap: Valve describes it as a Windows compatibility layer based on modified Wine and graphics API implementations, including translation from DirectX to Vulkan. Valve’s Proton documentation explains the technology and its ongoing development.

Proton is not a game store, account system, or download manager. It does not provide access to an Epic, GOG, or Amazon Games library, and it does not turn a purchase made in one store into a Steam license. You still need a supported way to sign in to the store where you own a game and install it. Then a compatible tool may be able to run the installed Windows game.

How a non-Steam game reaches Game Mode

Think of the process as three distinct jobs: obtaining the game, providing a compatibility environment, and launching it conveniently from Steam Deck’s interface. One application can help with more than one job, but the jobs remain separate.

  1. Store access: A launcher connects to a store account and helps install games from that library.
  2. Windows compatibility: Proton or another Wine-based tool attempts to run the Windows build on Linux. Compatibility depends on the game and its dependencies.
  3. Deck interface: Adding the installed game to Steam can make it available from the Steam library and Game Mode. That shortcut changes how you launch it; it does not change the game’s store ownership or make an incompatible game compatible.

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says applications that are not on Steam can work with Proton and be used on Deck. That is a possibility, not a promise about every application or every installation method.

Heroic: one route for Epic, GOG, and Amazon Games

Heroic Games Launcher is an open-source, third-party launcher for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its project documentation lists support for Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games. Heroic is a way to access supported libraries; it is not Proton itself, nor should it be confused with an official client from each storefront.

Heroic’s Linux guide describes a workflow that includes installing the launcher, logging in to a store account, choosing a compatibility tool, installing a game, and optionally adding it to Steam for Game Mode. Its documented steps are version-sensitive, so consult the current Heroic Linux quick-start guide for exact labels and interface details. In broad terms, the guide directs users to select the Flatpak version when installing through a software manager, use Wine Manager to download a Proton-GE version, install the game, and add it to Steam. Newly added games can appear in Steam’s Non-Steam section.

Do not assume that a step for Heroic applies to every store launcher. Other storefronts or launchers may have different installation requirements, compatibility settings, or account flows.

Choose a route based on what you need

Need What handles it What to expect
Run a Windows game on SteamOS Proton or another compatible Wine-based tool It provides a compatibility path, but results vary by title and its components.
Access Epic, GOG, or Amazon Games libraries Heroic, according to its project documentation It handles supported store access and installation; it does not guarantee that every game will run.
Launch an installed non-Steam game from Steam Deck’s interface Add the application or game to Steam This provides a Steam library entry and can make it accessible in Game Mode; it does not transfer ownership.
Know whether a game has passed Valve’s Deck review Valve’s compatibility badge for that game The badge describes Valve’s review, not every third-party launcher setup.

Install through Heroic and add a game to Steam

The following is a high-level outline of Heroic’s documented Linux workflow, not a guarantee that every version or game presents identical screens. Follow the current guide for the latest interface instructions.

  1. Install Heroic. Use a software manager and, if following Heroic’s guide, make sure the Flatpak version is selected.
  2. Sign in to the relevant store account. Heroic’s guide covers Epic, GOG, and Amazon Games. You must own or otherwise have access to the game in the account you use.
  3. Set up a compatibility tool if the game needs one. Heroic’s Linux guide describes opening Wine Manager and downloading a Proton-GE version. The right tool can depend on the game; installing one does not establish that the game is compatible.
  4. Install the game from Heroic. Select the title in the launcher and use its installation flow. Store and game requirements still apply.
  5. Add it to Steam if you want to launch it from Game Mode. Use Heroic’s option to add the installed game to Steam, then check the Steam library’s Non-Steam section. Launching through Steam is an interface convenience, not a change to the account or compatibility layer.
  6. Test the game and adjust only as needed. Check controller behavior, text entry, display settings, and any launcher prompts. If it fails, revisit the game’s compatibility information and the relevant launcher or publisher guidance rather than assuming the installation itself proves compatibility.

Why one game works and another does not

Proton support continues to evolve, and a game can depend on software or policies that do not behave the same way in Linux as they do in Windows. Valve’s documentation identifies several common trouble areas; none means that every game in that category will fail.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
  • Anti-cheat: Valve says Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye can be supported, but game developers or vendors must enable or configure the necessary support. A game’s use of either system is not, by itself, proof that it will work or fail.
  • DRM and anti-tamper: Protection systems can create compatibility problems or delays. A game may fail at startup even when its main gameplay software would otherwise run.
  • Launchers and framework dependencies: Some pre-game launchers, including .NET/WPF-based ones, can be obstacles. Launchers can also affect navigation or require input that is awkward with a controller.
  • Media Foundation: Games that rely on media components may have issues with video or other media features.
  • Publisher rules: Technical compatibility is not the only concern. Heroic’s FAQ warns that some games may ban use through Wine or Proton when the operating system is unsupported. Check the game publisher’s current policy before signing in or playing.

Compatibility can also change as Proton, SteamOS, a game, its launcher, or an anti-cheat configuration is updated. A successful report from another player may not match your setup or the current version.

Read Steam Deck compatibility badges correctly

Valve’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown labels summarize its Steam Deck compatibility review. Their meanings help set expectations for games reviewed through Valve’s process, but a badge should not be treated as a certification of an installation through Heroic or another third-party launcher.

Badge What it means
Verified The game passes Valve’s checks without user configuration for full functionality.
Playable The game functions, but may require manual steps or adjustments.
Unsupported Valve identifies incompatibility with Proton or particular Steam Deck hardware.
Unknown No review result is available from Valve.

For details about the criteria, see Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility program. A badge can be a useful starting point when evaluating a game, but it does not resolve whether a separate store launcher, account flow, or game-specific protection system will work in your chosen setup.

Check these details before installing or playing

  • Look up the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility status, if Valve has reviewed it.
  • Identify whether it requires anti-cheat, DRM, a pre-game launcher, or specific Windows components.
  • Check current documentation for the store launcher and any publisher rules about unsupported operating systems or compatibility tools.
  • Consider the whole experience, not just whether the game opens: controller access, on-screen keyboard support when text entry is needed, and display behavior can affect usability.
  • Keep expectations title-specific. There is no established universal success rate, and availability in a supported launcher does not establish that a game will run on Steam Deck.

Valve’s Proton guidance discusses compatibility issues and features that developers may need to address. Its Deck compatibility guidance explains review expectations such as controller access, on-screen keyboard support where needed, and avoiding required pre-game launchers where possible.
