Linux cgroup v2 lets administrators organize processes into a hierarchy and control how workloads use resources such as CPU, memory, and I/O. The resctl-demo project makes those controls visible through guided, simulated contention scenarios; its companion resctl-bench runs whole-system benchmarks to examine how workloads behave under pressure.
This is a conceptual tour, not a current installation guarantee. The Linux Foundation session featuring Tejun Heo was recorded on June 9, 2021, and project setup instructions and kernel capabilities can change.
What cgroup v2 controls—and what resctl-demo shows
Control groups, or cgroups, let Linux group processes and apply resource-specific rules to those groups. In cgroup v2, controllers expose those rules through a unified hierarchy. A service, for example, can be placed in a group whose resource treatment differs from background maintenance work. The Linux kernel’s cgroup v2 documentation is the authoritative reference for the interface and behavior.
The practical problem is interference: a build can make a desktop feel unresponsive, or maintenance work can compete with a latency-sensitive service. resctl-demo uses guided scenarios and self-contained workloads to demonstrate how resource-control strategies affect that conflict. Its overview emphasizes server scenarios while suggesting the ideas may also apply to desktop workloads; the demonstration is a teaching aid, not a guarantee that it predicts every production system.

As the Linux Foundation’s event description puts it, “This session walks through various resource control topics using resctl-demo.” The 2021 session was scheduled as a 45-minute overview followed by 45 minutes of Q&A—event timing, not benchmark data.
Limits and protections solve different problems
Memory controls offer a clear example of why “resource control” does not mean only setting a hard cap. Limits bound or throttle use; protections influence how readily a workload’s memory is reclaimed when the system is under pressure.
| Control | Role | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
memory.max |
Hard usage limit | If usage cannot be reduced enough to meet the limit, memory pressure can lead to OOM handling and processes being killed. |
memory.high |
Throttling boundary | Excess use is throttled, giving userspace an opportunity to react rather than treating the setting as a simple hard cap. |
memory.min |
Strong memory protection | Expresses memory to protect from reclaim, subject to kernel behavior and system constraints. |
memory.low |
Work-conserving protection | Expresses a softer protection: reclaim is biased away from this workload, but the protected capacity can be used elsewhere when idle. The protection may be ignored when necessary to avoid OOM. |
The distinctions and exact behavior are documented in the kernel cgroup v2 guide and illustrated by the project’s memory-control guide. Kernel behavior can depend on version and configuration, so consult current documentation before applying settings to a production workload.

CPU, memory, and I/O are related but distinct controls
resctl-demo’s scenarios use cgroup2 as a foundation and address CPU, memory, and I/O resource management. Those controls are not interchangeable: CPU controls govern processor time, memory controls influence limits, throttling, and reclaim, and I/O controls affect storage access. Which one matters most depends on the workload and the contention being examined.
A cgroup setting is only part of the performance picture. The project’s resctl-bench README describes whole-system tests because end-to-end behavior crosses kernel subsystems, userspace, filesystems, block I/O, and the storage device. Its reports can help analyze a particular system and scenario; they should not be treated as a universal hardware score or as proof of a fixed improvement across machines.
Choose a setup route, then check today’s requirements
The project documents three broad ways to try the demo. Availability and compatibility of these routes should be confirmed in the current project documentation rather than assumed from older instructions.

| Route | What it is | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon EC2 image | A premade Amazon Machine Image documented by the project. | Trying the environment in an EC2 instance instead of installing it on a local machine. |
| USB system image | An installable image for UEFI x86-64 hardware; the documented process uses a USB flash drive. | A local, dedicated test machine. The project page does not specify a drive capacity or model. |
| Build from source | Compile and install using the repository’s instructions. | Readers who need to inspect or adapt the setup and are comfortable working with Linux system configuration. |
For the exact steps, start with the project’s repository and getting-started documentation. Its requirements guide calls for systemd-managed cgroup2 with CPU, memory, and I/O controllers enabled, along with additional kernel and system capabilities for some demonstrations. The historical requirements also mention a specially patched kernel branch, btrfs on a non-composite storage device, a btrfs swap file at least one third the size of physical memory, systemd, oomd, and utilities. These are descriptions of the project’s documented setup at the time, not universal or necessarily current requirements. Check the repository’s current instructions before changing filesystems, disks, boot parameters, or system configuration.
Run memory-pressure demonstrations only on a test system
The resource-protection scenario intentionally creates severe memory contention. The project warns that with safeguards disabled and a memory hog running, the machine can become sluggish or stall; recovery depends on system conditions, including OOM handling. Do not run this casually on a computer with unsaved work or services you need to keep available.
- Use a disposable test machine or image, and save or back up anything important before starting.
- Follow the project’s current prerequisites and scenario instructions; do not assume a historical kernel or system setup is suitable for your distribution.
- Observe responsiveness as the workload runs. If the system becomes sluggish, stop the experiment as the project documentation advises.
The demonstration is useful precisely because contention can be dramatic. That makes it an experiment to isolate, not a safe stress test for a daily-use machine.
What the 2021 tour can—and cannot—establish
The Linux Foundation recording is a guided introduction to resource-control topics, not a current compatibility statement or a published performance comparison. The available project descriptions establish the teaching approach, setup routes, and the kinds of controls explored; they do not establish a named percentage improvement, fleet-utilization gain, or result that applies across hardware. Treat resctl-demo as a way to understand and investigate workload interference, then validate any policy against the workloads and system you actually operate.
