Light pollution is human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from their natural state. It brightens the night sky and hides celestial objects, changes the conditions wildlife relies on after dark, and can interfere with the body’s circadian timing and sleep-related processes. The evidence is not equally strong for every outcome: effects on astronomy and many wildlife behaviors are well established, while the direct population-level health effects of typical outdoor exposure remain uncertain.
What light pollution is—and why it is more than a bright sky
Light pollution is not limited to the glow visible above a city. It includes outdoor light that is too bright, poorly aimed, left on when it is not needed, or sent into places where it serves no task. DarkSky International uses the definition “the human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from those occurring naturally.” The natural day–night cycle is part of the environment; artificial light changes that cycle and the places where darkness would otherwise prevail.
Three related effects help explain what is happening:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Skyglow is the brightening of the night sky, often visible over populated areas. Light directed upward or reflected off surfaces can scatter in the atmosphere and make the sky appear brighter.
- Glare is excessive or poorly controlled brightness that can be uncomfortable or make it harder to see. A lamp can produce glare even if it does not create a large visible dome of skyglow.
- Light trespass is light that spills into a place where it is unwanted, such as a bedroom, a neighboring property, or wildlife habitat.
These effects can occur together, but they are not interchangeable. A fixture pointed toward the sky contributes to wasted upward light; a bright unshielded lamp may create glare; and a light shining through a window can disturb a dark indoor space. How much harm occurs depends on factors such as direction, intensity, timing, spectrum, duration, and setting. Not all artificial light has the same effect.

How light pollution affects astronomy
Astronomy depends on contrast. Stars, galaxies, nebulae, and other faint objects are visible when their light can be distinguished from the background sky. Artificial sky brightness raises that background, reducing contrast and making dim objects harder or impossible to see from the affected location. Bright stars and planets may remain visible while many fainter stars disappear, so a sky can still look “starry” even after the conditions for observing faint objects have deteriorated.
The problem is not simply that a lamp is in the observer’s field of view. Light from many sources can scatter in the atmosphere, brightening a wider area of sky. As a result, switching off one nearby lamp can improve a local observing spot if that lamp causes direct glare, but a household fixture or accessory cannot reverse regional skyglow created by lighting across a town or city. Addressing that broader effect requires better-directed, appropriately limited outdoor lighting across the area.
For an observer, the practical distinction is between a local obstruction and a brighter night sky. If a nearby light is shining directly into the eyes or telescope, changing the observer’s position or shielding that source may help with glare. If faint objects are washed out across the sky, the limitation is the ambient brightness of the observing environment. Darker locations provide a better opportunity to see faint celestial objects because the background is darker.
DarkSky International’s 2022 State of the Science report page said its Artificial Light at Night Research Literature Database listed more than 3,500 scientific papers. That is a count of papers in a database as reported on that page—not a count of studies proving one particular effect, nor a measure of how much astronomy is impaired in any one place.

How light pollution affects wildlife
Many animals use darkness and natural changes in light to navigate, find food, avoid predators, rest, or time reproduction. Artificial light changes those conditions. The result varies by species and location: a light source can act as an attractor, a barrier, a navigational cue that points the wrong way, or a change to the timing of a behavior. The examples below are documented concerns described by DarkSky International’s wildlife and ecosystems resource, updated June 25, 2026.
Sea turtles: hatchlings can head inland
Newly hatched sea turtles normally use natural light cues to orient toward the sea. Artificial lighting near nesting beaches can draw them inland instead. A hatchling that moves away from the water may face additional hazards and fail to reach the ocean. The example shows why the placement and visibility of a light matter: lighting near a sensitive habitat can disrupt an animal’s orientation even when the fixture is not intended to illuminate the beach.
Migratory birds: disorientation and collisions
Artificially illuminated structures can disorient migratory birds, contributing to collisions with buildings. This is not a claim that every lit building causes a collision or that every species responds identically. It illustrates how a changed nighttime visual environment can interfere with movement, particularly where migration routes and illuminated structures intersect.

Insects: attraction can affect wider food webs
Insects can be drawn to artificial lights. That attraction can change where insects gather and how they move, with consequences that extend beyond the insects themselves because other animals depend on them as food. The ecological concern is therefore not just that a lamp attracts insects; it is that repeated changes in their distribution or activity can affect interactions across a food web.
These examples should not be collapsed into one universal rule about wildlife. Species, habitat, light intensity, spectrum, timing, and duration all matter. A color choice alone cannot be assumed harmless to every species, and a light that has little apparent effect in one setting may be disruptive in another. DarkSky’s 2026 wildlife resource describes varied ecosystem effects; it does not make every artificial light source equally harmful.
What is known about human health—and what is not
Artificial light at night can affect circadian rhythms and sleep-related processes. Circadian timing is the body’s internal organization of biological activity across the day–night cycle. Light at night can provide a cue that conflicts with the natural dark period, and controlled indoor or laboratory exposure research can examine how that cue affects biological processes.

That mechanism is not the same as proving that ordinary outdoor lighting causes disease across the general population. DarkSky International’s current “Natural darkness and human well-being” page, updated November 17, 2025, says evidence directly linking ordinary outdoor artificial light at night to widespread health problems is still emerging and inconclusive. Findings from controlled indoor exposure, or from groups with particular exposure patterns, should not be treated as direct estimates of the health effects of typical outdoor lighting for everyone.

The distinction matters when interpreting claims about cancer or other diseases. The available evidence described here does not establish that typical outdoor lights cause cancer or another disease as a settled population-level fact. Nor does uncertainty about those direct outcomes mean artificial light has no biological effect: circadian and sleep-related processes can be affected, while the size and consequences of typical outdoor exposure remain less certain.
The American Medical Association statement reproduced in a 2021 DarkSky International pamphlet describes the ability to override natural light and dark cycles with artificial light as a recent “man-made self-experiment.” That statement highlights the novelty of widespread exposure; it is not a quantified estimate of disease risk. DarkSky’s 2026 State of the Science report surfaced in search, but its full PDF text was not accessible in the source material available for this article. The specific qualification about ordinary outdoor exposure is therefore grounded in the organization’s accessible current health page, rather than an asserted finding from the full report.
No recent, directly comparable statistic is established here for the global disease burden caused by typical outdoor light pollution. A paper count, a result from a controlled exposure experiment, and a measure of disease burden are different kinds of evidence and cannot substitute for one another.

| Lighting factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Direction and shielding | Does the fixture direct light onto the intended area, or allow it to escape upward or sideways? | Shielding and aiming can reduce unwanted spill and wasted upward light. |
| Brightness | Is the light no brighter than the task requires? | More light is not automatically more useful; excess brightness can add glare and illuminate areas unnecessarily. |
| Spectrum or color temperature | Is the color appropriate for the location and task, while accounting for nearby people and habitat? | Spectrum is one factor in effects, but no single color can be called harmless to all species. |
| Timing and controls | Can the light be switched off when the task is over, or activated only when needed? | Reducing the duration of unnecessary lighting limits how long the night environment is altered. |
| Site and local rules | Does the location have sensitive habitat, neighboring windows, or local lighting requirements? | The appropriate choice depends on context; local codes and site needs still apply. |
This framework is useful whether the goal is protecting night-sky viewing, avoiding light spill into a home, or reducing disturbance near wildlife. It does not promise that an individual change will eliminate regional skyglow or resolve health effects. DarkSky International’s responsible-lighting resource and 2021 pamphlet recommend limiting light to what is needed and using shielding; its current resource site also offers a certified-lighting directory. No product’s performance or program terms are established here.
How to reduce unnecessary outdoor light
Practical changes can reduce avoidable exposure and light spill. They are environmental and exposure-reduction measures, not treatments for disease. Start with the source and the task, rather than adding more light by default.
- Identify the task. Decide what the light is meant to illuminate—such as an entry, path, or work area—and whether that task requires the light to stay on continuously.
- Remove light that serves no task. Switch off decorative or security lighting when it is not needed. Where intermittent illumination is adequate, use a timer or motion activation rather than leaving the light on all night.
- Choose and aim a shielded fixture. A fully shielded outdoor wall light can direct illumination toward the intended area instead of allowing it to escape upward or sideways. Place it so it lights the task, not a neighboring window or nearby habitat.
- Match brightness to the job. Use no more brightness than necessary for the intended use. Avoid a brighter fixture simply because it is available; excess light can create glare and spill.
- Consider color in context. Spectrum or color temperature belongs in the decision, but no single color should be assumed harmless to all wildlife. Consider the setting and any local guidance or requirements.
- Protect indoor darkness. If an outdoor light spills into a sleeping space, reduce or redirect the light at its source where possible, and keep the sleeping area dark. This reduces unwanted exposure without claiming to prevent or treat a health condition.
- Check local rules and habitat needs. Before changing lighting in a sensitive area or installing a fixture, account for local codes and site-specific needs. For larger skyglow problems, individual household changes have limits; broader improvements depend on lighting choices across the surrounding area.
How to interpret the evidence
Different questions require different evidence. The fact that sky brightness reduces visibility is not a measure of disease risk. An observed wildlife behavior is not proof that every species is affected in the same way. And a biological response under controlled conditions does not by itself show that typical outdoor exposure causes widespread illness.
DarkSky’s 2022 report page described a database containing more than 3,500 scientific papers, while its pages updated in 2025 and 2026 address human well-being and wildlife effects respectively. The size of a literature database signals that artificial light at night is a substantial area of study; it does not mean every question has the same level of certainty. For readers weighing a claim, the key questions are what exposure was studied, which species or population was involved, what outcome was measured, and whether the conclusion is about a mechanism, a behavior, or a demonstrated population-level effect.
For astronomy, the central consequence is a brighter background sky and less visible faint detail. For wildlife, the central issue is that altered nighttime conditions can disrupt species-specific behaviors and ecological interactions. For human health, circadian and sleep-related effects are plausible and studied, but the direct consequences of ordinary outdoor exposure remain inconclusive according to DarkSky International’s current health resource. Keeping these evidence levels separate makes it possible to take unnecessary light seriously without overstating what is known.
