Airborne LiDAR can make subtle battlefield earthworks easier to see beneath woodland by measuring the ground through gaps in the canopy and producing a terrain model. The model reveals shapes—not their date or purpose—so archaeologists compare candidate features with historical records, maps, aerial photographs and field observations before interpreting them.
What airborne LiDAR reveals—and what it does not
Airborne LiDAR, or light detection and ranging, measures distance using laser pulses sent from an aircraft. A sensor records the time and characteristics of the returning light, allowing the survey team to estimate elevations for the surfaces that the pulses reach. The resulting measurements form a dense set of points that can be processed into models of the landscape.
In woodland, some laser pulses may pass through openings between leaves and branches and return from the ground. Filtering out returns classified as vegetation can make the ground’s relief easier to inspect. A terrain model can show a shallow bank, depression, line or enclosure that is difficult to spot from the ground or in an ordinary aerial photograph because trees obscure the view.

LiDAR records the surfaces sampled by its returns; it does not directly detect buried objects or label a shape as a trench. Nor does a visible hollow automatically represent a shell crater. The archaeological value comes from making surface forms easier to map, compare and investigate.

Historic England’s overview, updated in 2024, describes airborne models with metre and sub-metre resolution and notes that the method can make hard-to-detect features recognizable. It gives a general airborne-system rate of 20,000 to 100,000 points per second. That is Historic England’s broad technical figure, not a specification that applies to every modern sensor or survey.
How archaeologists move from a terrain model to an interpretation
A model is a starting point for asking what may have happened in a landscape. Archaeologists examine how a feature sits within its surroundings, whether related forms recur, and whether the shape and pattern fit what is known from historical records. Different kinds of evidence help answer different questions: LiDAR may show a bank’s outline, while an archival map or wartime photograph may help establish when it appeared or how it was used.
- Acquire elevation data. An airborne survey records returns from vegetation, structures and, where pulses reach it, the ground. The quality of the eventual ground model depends partly on how many useful ground returns the survey collects.
- Separate ground from other returns. Processing classifies points so vegetation and structures can be distinguished from the terrain. The result is an estimate of ground relief, not a guarantee that every patch under the canopy was measured equally well.
- Inspect relief and map candidate forms. Archaeologists look for changes in elevation and recurring patterns that merit investigation. A mapped feature remains a candidate until other evidence supports an interpretation.
- Compare independent evidence. Historical maps, archives, aerial photographs and known military engineering patterns can provide context. GIS helps researchers examine spatial relationships among the forms and documentary evidence.
- Check the ground where possible. Field observations can confirm that a mapped form is present and document its condition. Researchers may also measure, photograph and geolocate features, while respecting permits and heritage-protection rules.
These stages matter because landforms are not unique signatures. Forestry, agriculture, natural drainage and later construction can create or alter forms that resemble archaeological remains. Historic England cautions that LiDAR records features indiscriminately and that alternative evidence is especially important in managed woodland, where forestry activity can produce lookalikes.

Why woodland surveys can succeed—or fall short
Canopy does not make a LiDAR survey automatically effective or ineffective. What matters is whether enough pulses reach the ground and return in a way that can be used to model it. The structure of the trees and understorey, the survey’s resolution, acquisition conditions and data processing all affect how confidently researchers can interpret small features.

Historic England recommends higher-resolution survey in woodland than in open terrain and advises capturing data in winter for woodland work. Leaf-off conditions can improve the opportunity for pulses to reach the ground, but they do not remove every obstruction. Dense young regrowth or an unthinned conifer plantation may restrict ground returns so severely that the survey is unsuitable for the intended question.
Resolution is another limit. Broad-coverage elevation data may show the general arrangement of a landscape while failing to resolve small earthworks clearly. The Seelow Heights study specifically notes that resolution limitations complicate assessment of feature distribution. A smooth or indistinct feature in a model should not be treated as proof that no archaeological trace exists; conversely, an apparently clear shape still needs interpretation.
Survival also varies. Agriculture, erosion, forestry and urban development can destroy, reshape or obscure traces. In the Seelow study area, postwar urbanization and agricultural development affected preservation and visibility. A model depicts the terrain as surveyed, not necessarily the complete or original wartime landscape.

Two LiDAR studies show different ways to map battlefield landscapes
Studies of the Ardennes and Seelow Heights illustrate why feature counts need to be read in context. They investigated different regions and used different survey scales and methods. Their reported totals are not equivalent counts of every feature surviving in either battlefield.

| Study | Survey and evidence | Reported results | How to interpret the results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle of the Bulge, forested Ardennes; Stichelbaut and colleagues, Antiquity, 2023 | Drone-mounted LiDAR at 1 m resolution and very-high-resolution SLAM methods; field visits were used to check features. | More than 940 features were revealed; many were subsequently visited and confirmed. | The project documents a forested battlefield landscape and its heritage, rather than proving that every mapped form has the same date or function. |
| Seelow Heights, eastern Brandenburg; conflict-archaeology study, 2023 | Airborne laser scanning combined with archival research, GIS mapping and limited field reconnaissance. | The broad assessment covered about 6,000 km² and identified likely military or military-related activity across at least 158 km². Researchers mapped 2,515 individual features in detail. | The figures belong to this study’s assessment and mapping. The authors note resolution and landscape-change limits, and the mapped traces span more than the battle itself. |
The Ardennes team’s combination of drone-mounted LiDAR and SLAM offered local detail in a forested setting. The study reported more than 940 features, many checked on visits. This kind of result shows how topographic survey can guide archaeological attention across woodland where individual traces may be difficult to locate through ordinary observation.
The Seelow study worked at a broader regional scale and joined airborne laser scanning to documentary and spatial analysis. Across an area of about 6,000 km², the authors assessed likely military or military-related activity over at least 158 km² and mapped 2,515 features in detail. Those numbers describe the study’s mapped evidence, not an exhaustive inventory of all remains.
The Seelow features include trenches, field fortifications, shelling or bombing craters, storage areas, vehicle shelters, staging areas and other traces of activity. The study also includes evidence predating the battle and remains from after it. A feature in the mapped landscape is therefore not automatically a remnant of a particular combat action, unit or day.
The researchers used archival material to interpret spatial patterns and conducted two days of field reconnaissance to check a sample. Their work was constrained by heritage-protection rules and permits. Some suggested functions and unit associations remained tentative, with the authors acknowledging alternative explanations. This is an important distinction: the terrain model can help locate a form, but its historical meaning requires a wider argument.

Normandy offers a complementary heritage-survey example—not a LiDAR result
A separate Normandy inventory illustrates how researchers can document a WWII landscape through several kinds of evidence without relying on LiDAR. In an article dated 3 June 2026, the French Ministry of Culture described a regional inventory produced after ten years of work by DRAC de Normandie, Inrap and the University of Caen. It reports 974 sites and 8,082 individual elements across Calvados, Manche and Orne.
The described method combines documentary sources, comparisons between current imagery and 1940s–1950s aerial photographs, and pedestrian field checks. For structures, researchers measure, photograph and geolocate what survives. The inventory focuses on durable built or human-modified traces and excludes direct combat hazards such as bomb craters and munitions. Its counts should not be attributed to LiDAR: the ministry’s account describes a documentary and photographic comparison process with field verification.
That distinction is useful when reading battlefield maps and inventories. Different methods can illuminate different parts of the record. LiDAR is particularly useful for terrain relief; historical photographs can show earlier surface conditions; documents can give a feature context; and a visit can establish what remains visible now and in what condition.
What a mapped battlefield feature can—and cannot—establish
A LiDAR-derived terrain model can support statements such as “a linear earthwork is visible here” or “a cluster of depressions forms a pattern worth investigating.” By itself, it cannot establish that the feature dates to WWII, was made for military use, or belonged to a named force. The confidence of an interpretation depends on the quality and fit of the evidence brought together.

- Shape is a clue, not a date. Similar banks or hollows can have different origins. Historical maps, documents and dated aerial photographs may help establish whether a form belongs to the wartime period.
- Pattern can be stronger than an isolated mark. Spatial relationships among candidate features may be more informative than one shape considered alone, especially when they align with documentary evidence or known military engineering practice.
- Ground checks test visibility and condition. A visit can confirm that a mapped form exists on the ground, document its preservation and help distinguish a possible archaeological feature from a later alteration.
- One landscape can contain several periods. The Seelow study includes pre-battle facilities and post-battle remains as well as features associated with military activity. Do not assign every trace to the main battle without supporting evidence.
- Absence from a model is not proof of absence. Canopy, limited ground returns, coarse resolution or later land use may make a feature hard to detect or may have removed it.
Researchers therefore use terms such as “candidate,” “likely” or “the authors interpret” when the evidence does not settle a feature’s origin or function. Those qualifications are not a weakness in the mapping; they distinguish what the model shows from what historical interpretation proposes.
Why mapping matters for battlefield heritage
Battlefield archaeology can reveal a wider landscape than a narrative focused on prominent built fortifications or famous locations. Traces of fighting positions, dugouts, vehicle shelters, staging areas and logistics may survive away from places most often recognized as historic sites. Mapping those remains helps researchers understand how military activity occupied and altered the terrain.
It also helps make preservation decisions more informed. A mapped feature may be vulnerable to forestry, agriculture, development or erosion, and recording its location and condition can support heritage management. The Ardennes study explicitly frames its work as documenting the battlefield and addressing heritage management as well as detection. A terrain model is thus both an analytical aid and a way to direct attention toward places that may otherwise go unnoticed.
The Normandy D-Day property, as described by UNESCO, includes preserved Atlantic Wall remains and traces left by confrontation in the landscape. That broader heritage context is distinct from the Normandy inventory method and from the Ardennes and Seelow LiDAR studies. Together, these examples show why landscape documentation benefits from combining methods rather than treating any single map layer as a complete account.
