Lenders evaluate a Bitcoin mining loan as an operating-business credit decision, not simply a bet on the resale value of ASIC machines. They examine the borrower, power and hosting arrangements, mining-pool performance, liquidity, legal structure, compliance, collateral controls, and the lender’s ability to recover money if mining economics deteriorate. The loan structure then determines whether the primary collateral is the machines, future Bitcoin production, or Bitcoin already held by the borrower.
The most useful way to compare offers is to map four things side by side: what is being financed, how collateral is valued and controlled, which LTV tests apply during the term, and what happens after a missed payment or collateral breach. Published percentages from one provider are examples, not universal market rules.
What lenders examine before approving a Bitcoin mining loan
Collateral is only one part of underwriting. A lender wants to know whether the mining operation can keep running, whether the borrower can cover obligations during weak market conditions, and whether the lender has a practical recovery path.

Expect requests for corporate formation documents, ownership information, management backgrounds, financial statements, bank or wallet evidence, tax information, debt schedules and details of related entities. The lender may assess borrower liquidity separately from the collateral. A fleet of miners can have substantial paper value while the operator has no cash to pay electricity, hosting invoices, repairs, interest or margin calls.

Antalpha describes due diligence that can include appraisals, background checks, a review of business operations, and an assessment of collateral and borrower liquidity. Its process also includes know-your-customer and sanctions checks, executed legal documents, and final risk approval. Those are the company’s disclosed practices, not proof that every lender follows the same checklist.
Operating history and management quality
Underwriters may review how long the business has mined, who operates the sites, maintenance procedures, uptime, curtailment history, treasury policy, and the experience of the management team. They will want to distinguish a functioning operation with verifiable records from a proposed project whose economics exist only in a spreadsheet.
Legal and compliance risk
Jurisdiction, licensing, sanctions exposure, beneficial ownership and the enforceability of security documents can determine eligibility before financial ratios are considered. KYC and sanctions screening are commonly explicit conditions. The governing law, venue for enforcement, location of the machines, and the lender’s rights to enter a site or direct a custodian should be clear in the contract.
Loan structure determines what serves as collateral
“Bitcoin mining loan” can describe materially different products. Read the use-of-proceeds clause and security agreement rather than relying on the marketing label.
| Structure | Primary collateral | Typical purpose and control questions |
|---|---|---|
| Mining-machine loan | The purchased ASIC machines | Funds acquisition of specified equipment. Confirm serial-number schedules, lien perfection, insurance, site access, relocation restrictions and who controls the machines. |
| Hashrate loan | Bitcoin mined by specified machines or an agreed production stream | Proceeds can support mining-related service expenses such as hosting, maintenance and repair. Confirm pool-account permissions, wallet destination, reporting frequency and treatment of production shortfalls. |
| Bitcoin-backed credit | Bitcoin already held or transferred to the lender or its custodian | Value is marked against a liquid digital asset. Confirm custody, withdrawal rights, liquidation thresholds, notice periods and whether additional coins must be posted. |
Antalpha states that its machine loans are secured by the purchased machines, while its hashrate loans are secured by Bitcoin mined on specified machines. It also says Bitcoin collateral is typically transferred to the lender for the loan term and secured machines must remain at their sites. These details illustrate how control can be as important as nominal ownership.

How ASIC machines are valued
ASIC collateral is not valued like cash. A lender may start with the model, condition and efficiency of each machine, then apply discounts for market and recovery risk.
Factors that change recoverable value
- Model and efficiency: Newer, more efficient machines generally have a broader buyer pool and remain economical at lower Bitcoin prices or higher power costs.
- Operating duration and condition: Runtime, repair history, hashboard condition, firmware and cooling configuration affect expected remaining life.
- Market conditions: Bitcoin price, network difficulty, block subsidy economics, electricity prices and availability of new-generation equipment can change what a used miner is worth.
- Scale and location: Selling a few machines may be easier than liquidating a large fleet. Freight, customs, taxes, site access and local demand can materially reduce proceeds.
- Time pressure: A default sale may require an urgent transaction. A forced sale price is not the same as an orderly-market quote.
Antalpha cautions that miner valuations depend on model, efficiency, operating duration, market conditions, disposal scale and urgency. It also notes that resale data is limited, equipment is less liquid than Bitcoin, and estimated collateral value involves management judgment that may not match recoverable proceeds. Ask whether the lender uses an appraisal, recent transaction data, a liquidation discount, or an internally determined value, and how often that value is refreshed.
What LTV means in these loans
Loan-to-value is the balance divided by the lender’s recognized collateral value. The critical questions are which value is used, when it is measured, and what happens if the ratio rises.
| Published figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 50% origination LTV | Antalpha’s disclosed example for mining-machine loans | An example initial advance against machines, not an industry-wide maximum. |
| 60%–80% origination LTV | Antalpha’s disclosed range for hashrate loans | A provider-specific range for a production-linked product; the exact percentage can depend on the contract and borrower. |
| 57% LTV at December 31, 2025 | Antalpha’s combined Bitcoin-and-machine supply-chain loan portfolio | A portfolio measure, not a single-borrower offer or a required origination ratio. |
Ask for both the opening LTV and the maintenance rules. A contract may require extra collateral, partial repayment, suspension of advances, or a cure within a specified period when the ratio exceeds a trigger. A Bitcoin-backed facility can move through a trigger quickly because the asset trades continuously; an equipment facility may be revalued less frequently but can suffer a steep discount when buyers disappear.
Antalpha reported $1,001.1 million in supply-chain loans outstanding at December 31, 2025. That figure describes the company’s portfolio size, not the size of the overall market. It also reported a 7.8% weighted-average technology financing fee rate for 2025. That is a historical company-wide average, not a quoted rate for a new borrower; confirm whether any fee is an upfront charge, an annualized rate, or part of another pricing calculation.

Evidence a mining operator should prepare
A complete data room can shorten underwriting and expose weaknesses before they become surprises. Organize records by the asset, the operation and the cash flow supporting repayment.
Fleet and ownership records
- Machine model, serial number, quantity, purchase invoice, acquisition date and current location.
- Hashrate, power draw, firmware, repair history and recent uptime for each major batch.
- Existing liens, leases, pledges, insurance and any restrictions on moving or selling equipment.
Power, hosting and site documentation
- Executed power contracts showing tariff, demand charges, deposits, curtailment rights, term and termination provisions.
- Hosting agreements, service-level terms, maintenance responsibilities, access rights and evidence that invoices are current.
- Cooling, networking and security arrangements, including who can physically access the machines.
Mining and financial performance
- Mining-pool statements, wallet records and production history that reconcile to the proposed collateral account.
- Monthly revenue, electricity, hosting, maintenance, payroll, taxes, debt service and treasury transactions.
- Downside cases showing how the business pays obligations during lower Bitcoin prices, higher network difficulty, outages or delayed repairs.
- Cash reserves and readily available liquidity, separate from coins or machines pledged to the lender.
Mezzamine publicly says it verifies fleets using pool data, power contracts and financial statements and stress-tests price paths. Treat that as the provider’s stated approach, not independently validated industry practice or a guarantee of approval.
How the underwriting process usually progresses
- Initial eligibility review: The lender checks jurisdiction, entity type, ownership, sanctions exposure, proposed use of proceeds and whether the asset or production stream fits its program.
- Data collection: You submit corporate, financial, fleet, site, power, hosting and pool records. Missing serial numbers, unexplained wallet flows or inconsistent production data can delay the file.
- Technical and collateral analysis: The lender validates machines or production data, estimates collateral value, applies discounts and models operating dependencies.
- Credit and risk decision: Underwriters combine repayment capacity, liquidity, LTV, legal enforceability, market risk and management assessment. Conditions may include more equity, reserve funding, insurance or a lower advance.
- Documentation and closing: Security agreements, guarantees, wallet or custody instructions, control agreements, site acknowledgments and reporting covenants are executed before funding.
- Funding and monitoring: After disbursement, the lender may track collateral value, operational data, financial performance, risk management and compliance. A change in wallet destination, site, ownership or hosting provider may require consent.
Antalpha describes its underwriting purpose this way: “Our underwriting process involves gathering information on the borrower, allowing us to closely monitor their performance and develop exit strategies to recover principal in the event of default.” This is the company’s description in an SEC-filed prospectus, not a regulator’s assessment or evidence of a particular outcome.
Operational controls and continuity requirements
Mining collateral loses value if the machines stop hashing or the mined Bitcoin cannot be traced. Contracts therefore often address continuity as well as possession.
For machine-backed facilities
Confirm who pays power and hosting, who may shut down or relocate equipment, how repairs are authorized, and whether the lender can inspect the site. A requirement that machines remain at their sites can protect the lien, but it can also limit the borrower’s ability to move to cheaper power. Clarify insurance proceeds, replacement equipment and the process for substituting a failed unit.

For hashrate facilities
Define the machines covered, the pool account used, the wallet receiving production, reporting intervals and the lender’s rights if hashrate falls below a threshold. Determine whether proceeds are swept directly to the lender, reserved for electricity and hosting first, or released to the borrower under a waterfall. Production volatility, downtime and network difficulty should be addressed in the covenant language rather than left to an informal expectation.
For Bitcoin collateral
Ask whether coins are held by the lender, an independent custodian or a multisignature arrangement; who can initiate transfers; how valuation is determined; and whether the lender can sell without additional notice after a trigger. Custody, jurisdiction and cybersecurity controls can matter as much as the quoted interest or fee.

Default remedies should be read before signing because they determine the borrower’s practical downside. Depending on the structure and governing law, a lender may:
- Liquidate Bitcoin collateral, potentially after a margin call or notice period.
- Foreclose on and sell mining equipment, with proceeds affected by urgency, location, buyer demand and liquidation costs.
- Keep machines operating to generate additional Bitcoin collateral while arranging a workout or sale.
- Suspend further advances, require immediate repayment, demand additional collateral or enforce guarantees.
Antalpha says its possible responses include liquidating Bitcoin, foreclosing on equipment, or continuing to operate machines to generate more Bitcoin collateral. Read the exact sequence: the event that constitutes default, cure periods, valuation date, notice method, access rights, sale process, application of proceeds and treatment of any shortfall.

A practical framework for comparing loan offers
Put each proposal into one worksheet and compare contract terms rather than headline rates.
| Comparison area | Questions to answer in writing |
|---|---|
| Loan type and use of proceeds | Is this equipment finance, hashrate finance, Bitcoin-backed credit or a combination? Which expenses are permitted? |
| Collateral and valuation | Which machines, coins or production rights are pledged? Who values them, using what methodology, discount and refresh schedule? |
| LTV and triggers | What is the opening LTV, maintenance threshold, cure period, margin-call process and consequence of a breach? |
| Custody and control | Who holds Bitcoin, controls wallets, perfects liens, inspects sites and controls pool or hosting accounts? |
| Operating dependencies | How do power contracts, pool data, hosting, maintenance, repairs, outages and relocation affect compliance? |
| Economics | What are the interest or technology-financing fees, origination charges, monitoring fees, amortization, prepayment costs and repayment notice requirements? |
| Default remedies | Can the lender liquidate coins, seize machines, continue operations or appoint a receiver? How are sale costs and shortfalls handled? |
| Eligibility and documentation | Which jurisdictions, entities, owners, guarantors, insurance policies and compliance documents are required? |
Do not compare a lower LTV with a higher LTV as if they were equivalent products. A hashrate facility may advance more against expected production but expose the borrower to pool, uptime and Bitcoin-price risk. A machine loan may offer clearer asset identification but leave the borrower responsible for every operating bill and a less liquid resale market. The contract, not a presentation or verbal assurance, controls.
Questions to ask before signing
- What exact event changes the LTV calculation, and which price or appraisal source is used?
- Can the lender demand more collateral even when payments are current?
- Who receives mined Bitcoin, and can operating expenses be paid before a collateral sweep?
- What happens if power is curtailed, a host fails, a pool account is frozen or machines are damaged?
- Can equipment be moved, replaced or sold with consent, and how quickly will consent be provided?
- What reporting is required, how often, and what audit or inspection costs are charged?
- Which fees recur, which are one-time, and how are they calculated on outstanding balance?
- What notice and cure rights apply before liquidation or foreclosure?
Limits of published examples
Public disclosures from a particular lender can show how that company describes its products, but they do not establish universal LTVs, fees, valuation methods, documentation or remedies. Equipment is generally less liquid than Bitcoin, and an estimated ASIC value may not equal the cash recovered in a stressed sale. Provider webpages can describe an intended process without independently proving performance or eligibility for your jurisdiction. Obtain current written terms, have counsel review security and custody documents, and model the operation under adverse power, price, difficulty and downtime assumptions before borrowing.
