Your winning bid is usually only the starting point. The amount you ultimately pay can also include a buyer’s premium or other buyer-side charge stated in the auction terms, shipping and handling, and applicable sales tax, VAT, or import charges. Before bidding, check the auction’s terms and the checkout total for your address; do not add seller commissions to your estimate unless the auction explicitly bills them to you.
How to calculate the amount you may owe
Use this as a checklist, not as a universal tax formula:
Winning bid or hammer price + stated buyer’s premium and other buyer charges + shipping and handling + applicable tax, VAT, and import charges = estimated total payable.
The final amount depends on the auction, the destination, and the transaction. In particular, the taxable amount and the way tax is collected can vary. Treat the auction’s terms, checkout preview, and final invoice as the best sources for the buyer-side charges on your specific purchase.

Start with the winning bid
The winning bid, sometimes called the hammer price in a live auction, is the accepted price for the lot. It is not necessarily the amount due: buyer-side charges, delivery, and taxes may be added. For example, Whatnot’s guidance says applicable VAT is added to the winning auction price and remitted to the relevant tax authority. That describes Whatnot’s stated treatment, not every auction or destination.
Check for a buyer’s premium or other buyer charge
Read the specific auction’s terms for a buyer’s premium, service charge, handling fee, or other amount charged to the buyer. Do not assume a premium applies just because the lot is being auctioned, and do not assume it is absent just because the bid is displayed prominently. The available guidance does not establish a universal LEGO auction premium; the amount, if any, has to be confirmed in the particular auction terms and checkout.
Add delivery costs and taxes
Use the shipping quote for your address and delivery option rather than an estimate for another destination. Then check the checkout or invoice for sales tax, VAT, and any disclosed import or delivery charges. Shipping may also affect the taxable amount, depending on the jurisdiction and transaction.

Shipping and handling
A low bid can still produce a high total if delivery is expensive. This matters especially when comparing bulky, fragile, or international lots, where the quoted delivery amount can differ substantially between listings. Evaluate the actual quote for your address and chosen delivery option; a shipping figure shown before you select a destination may not be the amount you will pay.

Do not treat a shipping example from one seller or retailer as an auction-wide rate. LEGO’s US Shop terms, for instance, say special shipping and handling charges apply to Pick a Brick and Bricks & Pieces orders. That is an example of an official-shop policy, not a standard charge for LEGO auctions.
Sales tax in the United States
For orders from the LEGO Shop in the United States, the checkout page shows an estimate, while the exact sales tax is calculated when the order is submitted. LEGO’s terms say shipping and handling may be included in the taxable merchandise total where state law requires it.
BrickLink’s tax guidance explains that marketplace-facilitator rules require sales-tax collection in relevant US jurisdictions. Its guidance says that in most states tax is charged on the full order amount, including shipping and other fees, while acknowledging variation. These statements describe the guidance from LEGO and BrickLink; they do not establish one taxable base for every US location or every kind of auction transaction. Check the total shown for your order.

BrickLink says it collects VAT at checkout for qualifying orders of €150 or less delivered into the EU from outside the EU. It also notes that other additional charges may be due when a package arrives. Separately, Whatnot’s guidance says import VAT and customs duties may be payable on arrival for certain shipments above €150.

Those are platform- and circumstance-specific examples, not a complete statement of EU law. The €150 threshold in these examples should not be treated as a universal cutoff for every shipment or marketplace. For an international lot, check what the platform collects at checkout and whether the invoice or delivery terms identify charges that may be payable on arrival. Destination-country rules and the details of the shipment matter.
Buyer charges are not the same as seller fees
Marketplace fee pages often describe what a seller pays out of the sale proceeds. Those charges should not automatically be added to a buyer’s bill.
eBay’s final value fee guidance describes fees assessed to sellers and a calculation base that can include the item price, shipping collected, and sales tax. That information explains seller costs; it does not establish a buyer surcharge to add on top of a LEGO lot’s winning bid. Whatnot likewise describes commissions and payment-processing fees as seller costs. Its separate buyer-tax guidance concerns tax collection on purchases.
For your estimate, include a fee only when the auction terms or checkout identify it as a charge to you. A seller’s fee table, by itself, is not evidence of a buyer’s premium. Keeping the two sides separate prevents you from overstating the total you owe or confusing a seller’s proceeds with your checkout price.

How to compare two LEGO auction listings fairly
Compare the same item and condition, and use the same destination and delivery assumptions. A headline bid alone does not show which listing is cheaper after the additional costs are included.
| Cost item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Winning bid or hammer price | The accepted auction price for the lot. |
| Buyer’s premium or other buyer-side fee | Whether the specific auction terms or checkout explicitly charge it, and the amount stated there. |
| Shipping and handling | The quote for your address and delivery option. |
| Sales tax or VAT | The amount shown at checkout or on the invoice; the taxable base and collection method may vary. |
| Import or delivery charges | Any charges disclosed for the shipment, including charges that may be payable when it arrives. |
| Total payable | The checkout or invoice total, with any relevant arrival charges considered separately if they are not collected at checkout. |
For example, one listing can have a lower bid but a higher shipping quote or an explicit buyer’s premium. Another can have a higher bid and fewer add-ons. Without the actual terms and destination-specific totals, neither headline bid tells you which option costs less. Compare the payable totals rather than trying to infer the winner from the bid alone.
A pre-bid check that avoids surprises
- Confirm the lot and auction terms. Check what is being sold and read the terms for a buyer’s premium, service charge, handling fee, or other buyer charge. Do not infer a buyer fee from a seller-fee page.
- Set your destination and delivery option. Get the shipping quote for the address where the lot will be delivered. If the quote depends on an option you have not selected, do not treat the earlier estimate as final.
- Review the checkout preview. Look for shipping, buyer-side fees, and tax or VAT shown for your order. A preview is an estimate where the platform says the exact amount is calculated later.
- Check for cross-border charges. If the lot is being shipped internationally, read the shipment terms and relevant platform guidance to see whether import charges may be payable at arrival rather than included in checkout.
- Compare the final totals. Use the same cost categories for each listing and compare the checkout or invoice amount, not just the winning bids.
Why the amount at checkout can exceed the bid
The difference is usually explained by one or more added cost categories: an explicitly stated buyer’s premium, shipping and handling, tax or VAT, or import charges. A checkout total may also change from an earlier estimate if tax is calculated when the order is submitted or if the destination changes the shipping or tax treatment.

When a total is higher than expected, inspect the itemized checkout or invoice rather than assuming the platform added a hidden auction fee. Identify which line item changed, confirm whether it is charged to the buyer, and compare it with the auction terms. If a cost is not clear or the invoice conflicts with the terms, ask the auction or marketplace to explain the charge before completing payment.

How to decide what bid fits your budget
Work backward from the maximum total you are willing to pay. First identify charges that are already stated or quoted for your address—such as a buyer’s premium, shipping, and checkout tax—and allow for any import charges that the shipment terms say may be due separately. The remainder is the most you can allocate to the bid without exceeding that total budget.
This is a budgeting method, not a way to calculate an unknown tax rate. If the platform has not provided a tax estimate or the international charges are uncertain, you cannot derive an exact all-in maximum from the bid alone. Check the auction or marketplace’s terms and the destination-specific checkout information before deciding whether the uncertainty is acceptable.
What the available fee guidance does—and does not—establish
The cited platform guidance is useful for understanding the kinds of costs that may appear and for distinguishing buyer charges from seller costs. It does not establish one fee schedule for all LEGO auctions, a universal buyer’s premium, or one tax formula that applies across destinations. eBay’s and Whatnot’s seller-fee explanations should not be repurposed as buyer surcharges, and examples from the US or EU should not be read as worldwide rules.
For a particular lot, the decisive details are the auction’s own buyer terms, the shipping quote to your address, and the order’s checkout or invoice. If an international shipment may carry charges at arrival, checkout alone may not show every amount that could ultimately be due.
