Legitimate YouTube sponsorships are arranged either through a direct relationship between a creator and a brand or agency, or through YouTube’s creator-partnership tools. In either case, the parties—not YouTube—agree on the campaign’s deliverables, fee, timing, review process, and content rights. Creators also have a separate responsibility to disclose paid promotion clearly; using YouTube’s paid-promotion setting does not necessarily satisfy every legal disclosure requirement.
How do YouTube sponsorship deals work?
A sponsorship is a business arrangement in which a brand pays for a creator’s participation in promoting its product, service, or message. That can mean a spoken mention, a dedicated segment, or another agreed placement. The exact format is negotiated for each campaign; there is no universal YouTube sponsorship package.
YouTube distinguishes sponsorships from two related forms of paid content. Its Help guidance describes sponsorships as content financed wholly or partly by a third party. A paid product placement, by contrast, integrates the third party’s brand, message, or product into the content in exchange for compensation. An endorsement is content created for an advertiser—or, in some circumstances, for the creator’s own brand—that viewers are likely to understand as reflecting the creator’s opinions. A campaign can involve overlapping concepts, and legal definitions may differ from YouTube’s.

How do YouTubers get sponsorship deals?
There are three useful ways to understand the routes. YouTube’s tools provide a documented platform route; Open Call is a particular brief-and-submission workflow; and direct or agency outreach is another way parties may connect. They differ in who initiates contact and how a campaign is organized, not in whether a deal is automatically legitimate.
| Route | How contact starts | Access and review | What the platform materials establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Creator Partnerships | Advertisers can discover and contact creators; creators can share channel information to support discovery. | Integrated for creators into YouTube Studio and for advertisers into Google Ads and Display & Video 360. The March 23, 2026 announcement describes discovery, outreach, deal-link management, and measurement. | YouTube describes platform functions, not a requirement that every sponsorship use the platform, a standard fee, or a guaranteed result. |
| Open Call | An advertiser publishes a campaign brief; interested creators submit video content. | The advertiser reviews submissions and can approve videos for promotion as partnership ads, then measure results. | Google described this workflow in June 2025 and said it was then available only to select advertisers. Current access may differ. |
| Direct or agency outreach | A brand or agency contacts a creator, or a creator responds to an opportunity. | The parties discuss the scope and review arrangements directly. The cited platform descriptions do not establish a single process or eligibility rule for these deals. | This is a way parties may connect, not a YouTube requirement. Verify who is contacting you and what the campaign involves before sharing sensitive information. |
YouTube Creator Partnerships
YouTube announced on March 23, 2026 that its creator-brand partnership product is called YouTube Creator Partnerships; it was formerly known as BrandConnect. The product is integrated into YouTube Studio for creators and into Google Ads and Display & Video 360 for advertisers. YouTube describes tools for finding creators, contacting them, managing brand-deal links, and measuring organic and paid content. Creators can choose to share more channel information with brands.
This route can make discovery and communication easier, but it is not the only way a deal can be made. The announcement does not establish that a creator must use Creator Partnerships, that every creator has access to every feature, or that a particular audience size guarantees eligibility. YouTube reported more than 3 million creators within the YouTube Partner Program in 2026; that company figure describes the program’s scale, not the number of creators eligible for a specific campaign or a sponsorship rate.

Open Call campaigns
Open Call is a more structured campaign path. In Google’s June 2025 description, an advertiser publishes a creative brief through the creator partnerships hub to multiple YouTube Partner Program creators. Interested creators submit video content; the advertiser reviews and approves submissions. The advertiser can then promote approved creator videos as partnership ads and measure results.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to respond. A brief-and-submission campaign may ask creators to develop content before a brand has made a final selection. Clarify what the brief requires, what the review entails, whether compensation applies to the submission or only to approved work, and whether the brand intends to run the content as an ad. These are questions to settle with the advertiser; the workflow description does not supply standard answers. Google said Open Call was available only to select advertisers in June 2025, so do not assume every brand or creator can use it today.
Direct brand or agency contact
A brand or an agency acting for a brand may contact a creator directly, and creators may also initiate a conversation or respond to an opportunity. The official platform descriptions do not prescribe a universal email, representative, or agency process, so the route by itself does not prove that an offer is genuine. Check the sender’s business identity through an independent channel and confirm the campaign details before opening unexpected attachments or disclosing sensitive account information.

Ask who the agency represents and who has authority to approve the campaign and payment. A legitimate business discussion should be specific enough for you to understand the advertiser, requested content, timing, and next steps. If those details remain unclear, resolve them before committing or sending materials. This is a practical verification step, not a claim that one contact method is inherently safer than another.

What should be agreed before work begins?
YouTube and regulator guidance do not establish a universal sponsorship fee, payment schedule, or contract form. A creator’s compensation is therefore a negotiated term, not a figure that can be inferred from YouTube’s platform features or the number of creators in the Partner Program. The parties should put the actual scope and business terms in writing so there is a shared record of what is expected.
The written agreement need not follow a single industry template. It should make the campaign understandable to both sides. In particular, identify the parties and campaign, then spell out the work and the conditions attached to it:

- Deliverables: Describe the specific video or other content, the required sponsorship placement, and any requested links, messages, or materials. Avoid relying on an undefined phrase such as “one promotion” when the parties mean a particular format.
- Timing: Set the delivery and publication dates, along with any milestones needed for review. State how the parties will handle a schedule change.
- Compensation and payment trigger: Record the agreed fee, currency, payment timing, and what event triggers payment—for example, completion, approval, or publication—rather than assuming either party’s preferred arrangement is standard.
- Review and revisions: Explain whether the brand may review the content, what it is reviewing, how feedback is delivered, and how revisions are handled. Agree on the process before production rather than leaving approval expectations implicit.
- Content use and advertising: State where and how the brand may use the creator’s content, for how long, and whether it may promote the video as an ad. The fact that YouTube supports partnership ads does not itself grant a brand any particular usage right.
- Exclusivity: If the creator is being asked not to work with competing brands, define the relevant category, duration, and scope. Do not treat exclusivity as an automatic feature of sponsorship.
- Cancellation and reporting: Clarify what happens if the campaign is canceled or delayed, and whether the creator must provide performance information. Specify what reporting is expected instead of assuming every campaign uses the same measurement or reporting arrangement.
These are points to negotiate, not universal legal terms or a guarantee that any particular clause belongs in every deal. Where the value, rights, or obligations are substantial or unclear, consider getting qualified legal advice in the relevant jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do disclosure rules apply?
Platform labeling and legal disclosure are related but separate responsibilities. YouTube says creators must tell the platform when a video contains paid promotion by selecting the paid-promotion declaration in YouTube Studio. YouTube then displays a viewer-facing message at the start of the video. The platform also says creators and brands remain responsible for additional disclosures required where they operate or where their content reaches viewers.
For endorsements directed to US audiences, the Federal Trade Commission’s guidance treats payment, free or discounted products, and other things of value as material connections that may need disclosure. Certain personal, family, or employment relationships may also qualify. The FTC says creators are responsible for disclosure and should not assume viewers already know about their relationship with a brand. Rules may vary by jurisdiction, so creators working across borders should check the requirements that apply to their circumstances.

Make the disclosure clear and hard to miss
For a US-facing video endorsement, the FTC says the disclosure should appear in the video itself, not only in the description. Use clear wording such as “ad” or “sponsored” rather than vague shorthand. Put the disclosure with the endorsement so a viewer can understand the relationship when they encounter the recommendation. A platform notice can add context, but it does not remove the creator’s responsibility to make any additional disclosure required by law.
Disclosure should accurately describe the relationship. If a creator received a product for free or at a discount, that is different from being paid, but either may be a material connection under FTC guidance. Do not suggest that a product was purchased independently if it was provided as part of the campaign. Likewise, do not claim personal experience with a product that you have not tried, and do not make product claims that the advertiser cannot substantiate. Those truthfulness requirements are distinct from the question of how the deal was sourced.
How to assess an offer before accepting
A useful review separates the identity of the contact, the campaign request, the business terms, and the disclosure plan. Do not let a platform name or polished brief substitute for understanding each part.
- Confirm the parties. Identify the brand, the person contacting you, and any agency involved. Independently verify the business relationship if it is not already clear.
- Understand the assignment. Get the requested deliverables, publication timing, review process, and any proposed paid amplification in writing. If the offer uses Open Call, distinguish submission requirements from the work that will be commissioned if the advertiser approves a video.
- Settle the economics and rights. Agree on the fee and payment trigger, any exclusivity, permitted uses of the content, cancellation terms, and performance reporting. None of these terms can be assumed from the platform route.
- Plan disclosure before production. Decide how the paid-promotion declaration will be made in YouTube Studio and what clear in-video disclosure the audience needs. Check local requirements if the video may reach viewers in multiple jurisdictions.
- Keep the agreement and campaign details together. Preserve the approved scope, dates, compensation terms, usage permissions, and communications so both parties can refer to the same arrangement if plans change.
What YouTube sponsorship tools do—and do not—settle
YouTube’s announcements describe discovery, outreach, brand-deal link management, campaign submissions, ad promotion, and measurement features. Those tools can organize parts of a partnership, but they do not establish a universal market rate, guarantee campaign performance, determine whether a creator’s content is legally compliant, or supply one standard contract for all sponsorships. A platform-mediated conversation still requires clear negotiated terms and appropriate disclosure.
YouTube also reported in its 2026 announcement that 40% of a video’s views happen more than a month after it goes live. That is YouTube’s company-published figure, not a guarantee about an individual creator’s video or an agreed measure of campaign success. If a brand and creator want performance reporting to affect payment or campaign evaluation, they should define the relevant measurement period and metrics in their agreement rather than treating a general platform statistic as a promised outcome.
