League of Legends rotating modes are temporary queues or rule variants that Riot changes through patches and limited-time events. There is no permanent, worldwide calendar that guarantees when every mode will return. To see what is playable in your region, open the League client, select the queue list, and read the newest regional patch notes or Riot mode announcement. Arena and ARAM: Mayhem have their own formats and reward tracks, while Battle Pass experience and champion mastery can carry across modes under the current rules.
What “rotating mode” means in League
A rotating mode is a limited-time queue or a temporary variant of an existing game mode. Riot can bring it back, alter its rules, attach it to a seasonal event, or retire it in a later patch. The mode may disappear from the client even when its underlying systems are still being revised.

That makes the queue selector and the latest regional patch notes more authoritative than an old schedule article. Riot’s 2024 development update described Arena as returning in the first half of 2025 and said Swarm would not become permanent; those statements were plans for a particular period, not an evergreen calendar. Patch 26.17 later said Arena was moving to an alternating-patch schedule, with balance work focused on odd-numbered patches after the mode became more stable. A subsequent event or regional rollout can still change that timing.
How to check whether a mode is live
- Launch League of Legends and open the queue selector above the Play button.
- Look for a separately named queue such as Arena or ARAM: Mayhem. A mode that is not listed is not available to your account at that moment.
- Read the newest patch notes for your region. Patch notes record what changed in a specific release and may specify an activation or removal window.
- Check Riot’s current game-mode news for event rules, map changes, or a delayed regional launch.
- Verify the end date in the client before planning missions or spending time on a mode-specific reward track.
Start and end dates can differ by patch and region. Do not assume that a mode shown in a streamer’s video, an old patch note, or another region’s client is live for you.

Arena: small-team rounds, augments, and Fame
Arena is a team-combat mode built around short rounds and escalating augments. Riot’s original Arena FAQ described four teams of two fighting in rotating combat rounds until one team remained. The later format normally uses eight teams of two, but the 2026 update allows event-specific formats to replace that structure.
How an Arena match works
- Teams: You normally queue with one partner, forming a two-player team.
- Rounds: Teams fight another team in a sequence of combat rounds. Losing teams are eliminated rather than returning indefinitely to a standard lane phase.
- Augments: Between rounds, you choose unique power-ups that shape your build and can radically change how a champion functions.
- Victory: The last surviving team wins the match. Placement matters even when you do not finish first.
- Map and events: The 2026 update adds the Petricite Grove map, Augment Levels, and limited-time Events. Listed event formats include No Event, 3×6, Bravery, and Swift Arena; an event can alter the normal team count or rules.
Because events can replace the normal format, an Arena guide written for one season may describe a different number of teams, maps, or augment timing than the queue you currently see.
Arena Fame and historical milestones
Arena has used a mode-specific Fame progression track. Patch 25.05 documented the following milestones. These values are historical patch-note figures, so treat them as a record of that system rather than a promise that every threshold and reward is unchanged today.
| Fame level | Fame required |
|---|---|
| 1 | 100 |
| 2 | 1,400 |
| 3 | 2,900 |
| 4 | 4,900 |
| 5 | 7,400 |
| 6 | 10,400 |
| 7 | 14,400 |
| 8 | 19,400 |
| 9 | 28,400 |
| Beyond level 9 | Fame continues in infinite increments |
The original Arena FAQ said champion mastery was the first progression feature Riot expected to add, while Challenges and Eternals required more development. Later patches introduced the Fame track and additional reward systems. In practice, separate layers can coexist: an augment affects the current match, Fame tracks Arena participation, and account-wide systems such as the Battle Pass or champion mastery follow their own rules.
ARAM: Mayhem: ARAM rules with selectable augments
ARAM: Mayhem keeps the five-versus-five, one-lane identity of ARAM but adds a build-changing augment system. Riot stated that Mayhem runs in a separate queue from standard ARAM, so entering ordinary ARAM does not put you into the Mayhem ruleset.

Mayhem’s augment timing
- At the start of the match, choose one augment from three options.
- As your champion reaches level 7, another augment choice becomes available.
- A further choice appears at level 11.
- The final listed choice arrives at level 15.
That produces four to five choices during a match, depending on the current rules and how many selection opportunities the mode grants. Augments can alter abilities, damage patterns, survivability, or utility, so a familiar ARAM build may be less reliable than adapting to the options offered in that game.
Mayhem’s out-of-game progression
Patch 26.3 added 45 new augments. Some were unlockable through a progression track, and the same patch introduced the Season of Mayhem, an out-of-game progression experience intended to give Mayhem players goals and rewards beyond a single match.

Riot described further Mayhem work as planned across 2026 and 2027. Those statements describe the direction of development; the client’s current augment list and patch notes determine which effects are actually available.

| Feature | Arena | ARAM: Mayhem |
|---|---|---|
| Team format | Normally teams of two in elimination-style rounds; events can change the format | Five versus five |
| Battlefield | Arena maps, including the 2026 Petricite Grove update | One-lane ARAM map identity |
| Power choices | Augments selected between combat rounds, with Augment Levels in the 2026 update | Four to five augment choices during a match, including choices at levels 7, 11, and 15 |
| Mode progression | Fame milestones and event-specific systems | Season of Mayhem progression and augment unlocks |
| Rotation pattern | Patch- and event-driven; Patch 26.17 described alternating patches | Availability and augment sets evolve through patches and seasonal plans |
| Standard ARAM queue? | No; it is its own queue | No; Mayhem is separate from standard ARAM |
Both modes can also feed broader account systems, but a mode-specific reward is not automatically the same thing as Battle Pass or mastery progress.
Do rotating modes count toward the Battle Pass?
Riot’s 2025 season plan made the Battle Pass the main reward vessel. Everyone receives a free pass, with an optional paid version. Players gain passive Battle Pass experience by playing, and missions can accelerate progress through daily, weekly, Act-long, event, and mastery objectives.

Rotating-mode matches can therefore contribute to the broad play-experience portion of a pass, but the exact mission wording controls whether a particular objective accepts the queue. Riot’s design says players should not need to finish every mission: passive play experience and longer missions provide alternate routes. Read the mission’s “play,” “win,” champion, or queue qualification rather than assuming that every objective treats Arena and Mayhem identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPatch 25.12 moved Mastery Set Battle Pass experience into a mission so players could earn the full 2,500 BXP with champions of their choice. That change illustrates why old advice about which queue grants a specific amount of pass experience can become stale. Check the active mission panel and current patch notes for the season you are playing.
What to do when Battle Pass progress seems missing
- Finish the match to the results screen; leaving early can prevent completion credit.
- Open the Battle Pass mission panel and inspect the queue and champion conditions.
- Allow for the client to synchronize after returning to the lobby.
- Compare the mission text with the current patch notes if a mode was recently added or changed.
- Capture the match history and mission state before contacting support if progress still does not appear.
Do rotating modes count toward champion mastery?
Riot’s champion-mastery redesign states that “Mastery is for all players, regardless of mode or rank.” You earn mastery score by playing a champion, earn Marks of Mastery through a per-champion split track, and combine score with marks to raise that champion’s level. Mastery levels are uncapped: levels 5 through 9 require one mark per level, while level 10 and above require two marks per level.
Rotating modes can therefore be part of your mastery play, but the grade and milestone requirements still apply. Each split gives every champion a four-milestone track:
| Milestone | Requirement | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One B grade and four D-or-better games | One Mark and a Hextech chest |
| 2 | One A grade and four D-or-better games | One Mark |
| 3 | One S grade and four D-or-better games | Two Marks and a Hextech chest |
| 4 | One S grade and four D-or-better games | Two Marks and the champion title for the remainder of the split |
The published milestone table comes from Riot’s 2024 mastery update. The client’s current split panel is the place to confirm whether a particular rotating queue can satisfy a grade or game requirement, especially after a mode-specific scoring change.

Why one progression system may count while another does not
“Does this mode count?” is not one question in League. Battle Pass experience, champion mastery, lane quests, event currencies, Fame, and augment unlocks are separate systems with separate eligibility rules.
Patch 26.1 is a clear example: Swiftplay and rotating game modes do not use the newly assigned-position quest feature and retain the previous jungle and support quest rules. A rotating queue can award mastery score while still using different quest logic from Summoner’s Rift. Likewise, an Arena Fame point or a Mayhem unlock is not interchangeable with a Battle Pass mission completion.
- For Battle Pass progress: read the active mission conditions and wait for the post-match update.
- For champion mastery: check the champion’s split milestones, grade, and mark requirements.
- For lane or position quests: look for an explicit queue exception in the current patch notes.
- For mode rewards: inspect the Arena Fame or Season of Mayhem panel, because those tracks are separate from account-wide progression.
How schedules, events, and patches change your rewards
Riot uses patches and limited-time events to change the rules, reward tracks, augment pools, and availability of rotating modes. A mode can return with familiar branding but a different map, team structure, progression threshold, or reward inventory. Arena’s 2026 Events and Mayhem’s planned Trait and Ability Augment changes show why “the last time I played” is not a reliable specification.
Before investing in a time-limited track, confirm three things in the current client: the queue is selectable, the reward track has not reached its end date, and the mission or milestone text names the activity you intend to play. If a patch removes a queue, rewards that were not claimed may no longer be obtainable unless Riot explicitly restores them.
A practical decision guide
Choose Arena when you want
- Two-player team coordination instead of a full five-player line-up.
- Elimination rounds where augments accumulate between fights.
- A mode-specific Fame track and event formats that can change the normal rules.
Choose ARAM: Mayhem when you want
- A five-versus-five, one-lane match with ARAM’s basic identity.
- Several augment decisions during one match rather than round-based Arena combat.
- Season of Mayhem goals and an evolving augment collection.
Choose neither solely for a pass mission until you check
- The exact queue language in the mission.
- Whether the mission requires a win, a grade, a specific champion, or a normal-game category.
- Whether the mode is still available in your region and patch.
Fast answers to common questions
When is Arena coming back?
There is no single permanent annual date. Riot schedules Arena through patches and events; Patch 26.17 described an alternating-patch approach, but the current client queue list and newest regional patch notes are the authoritative answer.

What rotating mode is live right now?
Open the League client’s queue selector. The mode names shown there are the reliable live-status list for your account and region; announcements from another date or region are not enough.
Are Arena and Mayhem the same mode?
No. Arena is normally two-player teams fighting through elimination rounds, while Mayhem is a separate five-versus-five ARAM queue with augment choices at several champion levels.
Do I keep rewards if a mode rotates out?
Rewards already granted to your account remain account rewards. An unfinished, time-limited track or an unclaimed mode-specific reward may not remain obtainable after removal, so claim items and verify the end date before the queue closes.
Why did my jungle or support quest behave differently?
Patch 26.1 says rotating modes retain the previous jungle and support quest rules instead of using the newly assigned-position quest feature. Quest behavior is therefore a separate eligibility question from mastery or Battle Pass credit.
The reliable way to plan around rotating modes
Treat every mode as a current-patch service, not a permanent product. Confirm availability in the client, read the regional patch note, identify the specific reward system you care about, and check its own milestone or mission text. Arena’s Fame and event rules, Mayhem’s augment and Season of Mayhem systems, Battle Pass experience, and champion mastery can all change on different schedules. That four-part check prevents the most common mistake: assuming that progress in one system guarantees progress in another.
