League of Legends patches change competitive play by shifting the strength of champions, roles, items, or game systems—and teams then adapt their picks, bans, and strategies to those changes. The effect depends on who the adjustment targets, how teams can exploit it, and whether the tournament is played on that live patch or on a version selected under event rules.
Riot identified Patch 26.20, published October 6, 2026, as the Summoner’s Rift patch for “year-defining competitive play” and the 2026 Worlds patch. Its notes explain the intended direction of several changes, but they do not prove how much those changes altered tournament picks, bans, wins, or losses. Understanding that distinction is essential when interpreting a patch.
What a patch can change in competitive play
A patch does more than make an individual champion stronger or weaker. It changes the options teams consider viable and the costs of choosing them. A champion that loses damage may become less threatening in lane or in a coordinated fight. A champion that gains durability or utility may offer more dependable value even if their damage is unchanged. Changes to items or game systems can affect several champions or an entire role at once.

Each link matters. A numerical adjustment is not itself proof that a champion has fallen out of the meta, and a new pick appearing after a patch does not, by itself, prove that the patch caused it.

Direct champion changes
Champion adjustments can change damage, durability, lane pressure, clear speed, or utility. Even when a change looks small in isolation, its practical significance depends on the champion’s job and the situations in which teams use them. A damage reduction may matter particularly to a champion whose competitive value comes from reliable burst, while a durability reduction may make a previously dependable frontline pick easier to punish.
System and item changes
Changes to systems or items can redistribute power more broadly than a champion-specific adjustment. If a system change disadvantages a whole role or a family of builds, the balance response might involve changes to several champions rather than reversing the system change. That distinction helps explain why a patch can contain champion buffs even when the underlying cause is not a champion’s kit.
Why professional balance can differ from solo queue
A champion’s performance is not identical across every audience. Professional teams can coordinate around reliable picks, set up fights together, and exploit role flexibility more consistently than ordinary ranked players. Those advantages can make a champion valuable in organized play even if average players struggle to get the same results. Conversely, a champion who performs well in some ranked settings may not offer the reliability or team utility that professional teams prioritize.

Riot described Cassiopeia as capable of being dominant in pro play while weaker for average players, illustrating why a single overall win rate can obscure an audience-specific balance problem. The notes also described targeted nerfs to overperforming pro supports Nautilus and Bard. Those are developer explanations of the problem Riot intended to address; they are not independent measurements showing how much the champions’ professional results changed afterward.

Why blind picks and coordination matter
A champion’s value can depend on when a team has to select them. A reliable blind pick—one that can be chosen without first seeing the opponent’s full composition—can be useful because it limits the risk of being countered. If a patch makes such a pick less dependable, it may affect draft order and flexibility even if the champion remains playable in favorable matchups.
Riot’s Patch 26.20 rationale makes that distinction concrete. Riot said changes to K’Sante were intended to make him less reliable as a blind pick in coordinated play. The same patch raised his mana costs and reduced his damage reduction. That explanation identifies the design aim, not a measured result such as a specific fall in pick rate or success rate.
What the 2026 Worlds patch illustrates
Riot published Patch 26.20 on October 6, 2026, and identified it as the Summoner’s Rift patch for its “year-defining competitive play.” The notes describe several adjustments with professional viability in mind. They are useful for understanding Riot’s goals, but they should not be read as a ranking of the strongest champions at Worlds or as evidence of the eventual tournament meta.
| Patch example | Change or diagnosis described by Riot | What it can tell a reader | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambessa, 26.20 | Riot reduced her damage as part of adjustments to pro staples. | Riot wanted to alter the power of a champion it considered relevant to professional play. | How often teams picked or banned her after the patch, or whether the change altered match results. |
| K’Sante, 26.20 | Mana costs increased and damage reduction decreased; Riot said the goal was to make him less reliable as a coordinated-play blind pick. | The stated concern involved pick reliability in professional drafting, not simply average-player strength. | Whether teams stopped blind-picking him or how much his competitive performance changed. |
| Kennen and Kindred, 26.20 | Riot buffed them as champions who might be near the edge of viability. | The stated aim was to make potential options more viable. | Whether either became a common or successful tournament pick. |
| Ashe, 26.20 | Riot characterized Ashe as a premier pro-play marksman whose raw damage was too high given her utility. | Riot considered the combination of damage and utility, not damage in isolation. | The size of any post-patch change in her draft priority or results. |
The distinction between intent and outcome is especially important for a competitive patch. Riot’s description of a champion as a pro staple, or a possible edge-of-viability pick, tells readers how the developer framed a balance decision. It does not substitute for tournament match data collected after teams have had time to adapt.

How one season change can lead to a different kind of follow-up
Patch 26.3, published February 3, 2026, shows how a balance response can address an interaction created by a broader season update. Riot said it had gathered initial reads by playing and watching players, then buffed AD junglers because they were systemically worse under the new season. Riot retained the system changes associated with that disparity rather than undoing them.
That example distinguishes a role-wide consequence from a single champion falling behind. A system may change the environment in which several champions operate; direct buffs can then be used to address the resulting weakness without removing the system update. For competitive analysis, the useful question is not only “Which champion was buffed?” but also “What condition did the developer say the buff was intended to correct?”
It still takes observed play to determine what followed. Riot’s explanation describes the initial problem and response; it does not quantify the resulting balance among jungle picks or show how the changes affected tournament outcomes.

To assess a claimed meta shift, separate the patch’s stated purpose from what teams actually did and what happened in matches. Draft and match data can show whether professional teams subsequently picked, banned, or won with a champion more or less often. Those are different kinds of evidence.

- Identify the audience. Check whether the stated concern is average play, high-skill play, professional play, or coordinated play. A change aimed at professional drafting should not automatically be described as a general nerf for every player.
- Identify the change type. Determine whether the adjustment affects a champion, an item, or a game system. A system change can shift power across several champions or roles, while a champion change is narrower in scope.
- Check the competitive version. Establish which patch the event uses and when that version was selected. The newest live patch is not necessarily the patch teams play in a tournament.
- Look for post-patch observations. Use tournament picks, bans, and match results from the relevant patch and event to describe what teams did. Keep the time window and competition in view rather than treating one event as a universal result.
- Keep cause and correlation separate. If a champion’s pick rate changes after a patch, that is evidence of a change in drafts, not by itself proof that one adjustment caused it. Draft trends and outcomes can have multiple explanations; the patch notes alone cannot establish a causal effect.
This approach also prevents a common mistake: equating a developer’s balance rationale with a forecast of tournament results. A stated goal such as “less reliable as a blind pick” is a claim about the problem Riot wants to address. Whether teams respond by drafting the champion later, choosing a counter, or dropping the pick is a separate question for match data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which patch does a tournament use?
Tournament patch timing is determined by event rules, not by the simple fact that a newer update is live. An event may use the current live patch after a testing period, or organizers may set a competitive version according to their rules and timing. The exact approach can vary by competition and year.
A 2020 LCS rules document described games using the current live patch after a sufficient testing period and said changes to the competitive patch were at league discretion. That is historical evidence about that rules document, not proof of the current rules for the LCS or the 2026 World Championship.

Why a patch lock matters
A selected competitive version gives teams a shared environment in which to prepare. If the live game continues to change while an event uses a held version, live balance updates do not necessarily reach tournament play immediately. As a result, a champion’s live status and its value in a particular competition may differ. Any claim about what teams faced should name the event and version rather than assume that all professional matches use the newest patch.
What patch notes can—and cannot—prove
Patch notes are primary evidence of Riot’s published changes and explanations. They can show that Riot targeted a champion or system, state the intended audience, and describe the design concern behind a change. For example, Patch 26.18 says Riot viewed Cassiopeia as dominant in pro play despite weaker performance for average players, and Patch 26.20 links K’Sante’s adjustments to blind-pick reliability in coordinated play.
Those notes do not, by themselves, establish post-patch pick rates, ban rates, win rates, or a change in tournament results. Nor does a list of adjustments prove that a champion became unviable, that a role became balanced, or that a tournament’s outcomes were caused by the patch. Those questions require observed competitive data tied to the relevant version and competition.

Riot’s 26.18 notes also said changes at MSI had brought Syndra back into pro play, while her performance in specific solo-queue settings prompted a follow-up adjustment. This illustrates how competitive use and ranked performance can both inform balance decisions, while remaining distinct settings. It does not supply a numerical estimate of either effect.
A practical way to read a competitive balance change
When a patch note says a champion is being adjusted, read it in four layers rather than treating the change as a verdict on the champion’s future:
- What changed? Separate the actual adjustment—such as reduced damage, increased mana costs, or reduced damage reduction—from Riot’s explanation of why it changed.
- Who is the target audience? Look for language about average players, high-skill play, pro play, or coordinated play. The same champion can have different strengths across those groups.
- What draft or role mechanism could matter? Consider whether the change affects blind-pick reliability, team utility, role-wide power, or a system interaction. Treat this as a way to understand the design logic, not as proof of a tournament outcome.
- What evidence would confirm the result? Look for professional drafts and match results played on the relevant patch. Keep those observations separate from the developer’s stated intent.
This method supports a more precise conclusion than calling every buff a sign that a champion will become popular, or every nerf proof that a champion is no longer viable. A patch changes the conditions teams evaluate. Draft choices and match evidence show how competitive play responds.
