For Android Police writer Mark Jansen, the reason to return to Kindle was Kindle Unlimited: some books he wanted to read, especially in LitRPG and progression fantasy, were available through the subscription and he could not find them elsewhere. That is one reader’s experience, not proof that every Kindle Unlimited title is exclusive or missing from Kobo.

The feature is Kindle Unlimited, not a Kindle screen

Jansen says he had moved most of his reading to Kobo, but came back to Kindle because of the books he wanted to read. In his case, Kindle Unlimited’s included titles made Amazon’s reading ecosystem worthwhile. The value is therefore about access to particular books, not a hardware advantage that applies to every reader.

A Kindle e-reader is one way to read in that ecosystem; the subscription and the device are separate considerations. Jansen mentions his 11th-generation Kindle as part of his personal comparison, but his reason for returning was the service’s catalog. His conclusion—“As long as it exists, there will always be a reason to come crawling back to the Kindle”—is his characterization of Kindle Unlimited’s appeal, not an official Amazon statement.

When Kindle Unlimited may matter to a Kobo owner

The practical question is whether books you specifically want are included in Kindle Unlimited and whether access to them is worth using Amazon’s ecosystem. Jansen’s examples—LitRPG and progression fantasy—describe his own reading interests. His account does not establish that all books in those genres, or all Kindle Unlimited books, are unavailable through Kobo.

  • Check the specific titles and authors you want, rather than assuming a whole genre is exclusive to one store.
  • Consider whether you are willing to read those titles through Amazon’s ecosystem. The article does not make a case for buying a particular Kindle model.
  • Keep the subscription’s value distinct from the value of a Kobo or Kindle device. A device choice and a subscription choice are not the same comparison.

The available information does not establish a comprehensive catalog-size comparison or current subscription pricing, so it cannot support a claim that one store has more books overall or that a particular price or offer makes the subscription worthwhile.

How library borrowing changes the comparison

Borrowing on a compatible Kobo

Libby says many newer Kobo models have built-in OverDrive support, so users can browse, borrow, and read compatible library ebooks directly on the e-reader. A reader can also borrow in Libby and sync a compatible loan to Kobo using the same library card. This support depends on the device and title: some Libby ebooks will not sync, and Libby audiobooks and magazines are not supported on Kobo devices.

Sending a Libby loan to Kindle

OverDrive says Libby can send library books to Kindle, but the option is available only for U.S. libraries. It is not a worldwide advantage of Kindle. In either ecosystem, borrowing requires a valid library card and a participating library; the library’s licenses determine which books are available, lending periods, holds, and checkout limits.

If direct access to compatible library ebooks is central to your routine, check your library’s catalog and your exact e-reader model’s support before deciding. A service’s general compatibility does not mean every title or library loan will work on every device.

File formats and DRM are another Kobo consideration

Rakuten Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, and MOBI support for its e-readers, with a caveat for Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi devices. Kobo also lists CBZ and CBR comic files, along with common image and text formats. This can matter if you read files from sources other than an ebook store.

There is a separate workflow for Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files: Kobo says they require Adobe Digital Editions to transfer to a Kobo e-reader. Format support alone does not remove a file’s DRM restrictions or guarantee that a given file can be opened without the required transfer process.

Choose by the books and borrowing you actually use

A Kobo and access to Kindle Unlimited can serve different needs rather than being direct substitutes. To decide whether Kindle remains worthwhile for you, weigh the particular books you want against your library habits, location, and tolerance for file-transfer steps:

  • Kindle Unlimited: Are the titles you want included there, and is that access useful enough to you to keep using Amazon’s reading ecosystem?
  • Library delivery: Does your library support the delivery route you need? Kindle delivery through Libby is limited to U.S. libraries, while Kobo’s built-in borrowing works only for compatible devices, titles, and participating libraries.
  • File workflow: Do you rely on EPUB, PDF, or other files, and are you prepared to use Adobe Digital Editions when an Adobe DRM-protected file requires it?

For Jansen, Kindle Unlimited supplied the missing draw. For another reader, the answer depends on the titles they want and how well each ecosystem fits their library and file needs.
