Kindle e-reader software normally downloads and installs automatically over Wi-Fi. If an update does not arrive, check the connection and the software version for your exact Kindle model; if needed, Amazon provides a manual computer-and-cable installation method. If your Kindle is up to date but a feature is missing, that alone does not establish whether the feature is supported: eligibility depends on the specific feature and device, and Amazon’s general update guidance does not explain every feature’s availability.

What a Kindle software update does

A Kindle software update changes the e-reader’s operating software. Amazon describes its free updates as including general improvements and performance enhancements. The device typically downloads and installs an update automatically when it is connected wirelessly. Amazon Customer Service states on its Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page: “Software updates automatically download and install on your Kindle when connected wirelessly.”

An update is not the same as a new book file, and an update notification is not a guarantee that every Kindle receives the same software version. Amazon lists software by model and generation. That is why identifying the exact Kindle matters before checking a version or transferring an update file.

Find your Kindle model before checking its version

Use the model name and generation shown in your device settings or Amazon account to identify the correct entry on Amazon’s live Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. Do not assume that two devices with similar names, or Kindles released in different years, use the same software. If you are unsure which generation you own, resolve that first; a version number without its matching model is not enough to tell whether the reader is current.

Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

Compare the installed version on your Kindle with the version Amazon lists for that exact model. The version list is model-specific and can change. For example, when Amazon’s page was checked on October 9, 2026, it listed version 5.20.1 for several newer Kindle and Scribe models, while some older models had different versions. That is a dated example, not a universal current version or a target for every Kindle. Check the live page rather than trying to make your device match a version listed for another model.

How automatic updates work

For the normal update route, connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and leave it connected so it can receive and install available software. Amazon describes the process as automatic; the general update guidance does not specify a fixed schedule or promise that all devices receive an update at the same time. If a Kindle has been offline, it may not yet have had the opportunity to download an available update.

Check the software version after the device has had a chance to connect. If the installed version is already the one Amazon lists for that model, the update process may be complete even if you expected a different version based on another Kindle. If it is behind, first address the Wi-Fi connection, then allow the automatic path to work. If the latest version still does not download, use Amazon’s manual method.

Install Kindle software manually with a computer

Amazon supports manual installation when the latest software does not download automatically. The update file must match the Kindle model. A file intended for another model is not a safe substitute, even if the devices look similar.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.

  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
  1. Identify the exact Kindle model. Confirm the model and generation before selecting anything from Amazon’s model-specific software update page.
  2. Download the matching update file on a computer. Use the entry for your Kindle on Amazon’s official update page. Do not rename or substitute a file for a different device.
  3. Connect the powered-on Kindle to the computer. Use the charging cable included with the Kindle. The device should appear as a drive on the computer.
  4. Copy the update file to the Kindle drive. Drag the downloaded file onto the Kindle drive as Amazon directs; do not place it in an unrelated folder.
  5. Safely eject the Kindle and disconnect the cable. Ejecting before unplugging helps ensure the transfer has finished.
  6. Start the update on the Kindle. Open Menu > Settings > Menu > Update Your Kindle, then confirm the update.
  7. Wait for the installation and restart to finish. Amazon says the Kindle displays an updating message and restarts when complete. Do not interrupt the process while it is installing.

Amazon recommends charging the Kindle and leaving it overnight after the update so books can index. This is a post-update step; indexing is separate from installing the software itself.

Why a Kindle may not update over Wi-Fi

A Wi-Fi connection can fail because of a basic device setting, incorrect network details, distance from the router, or incompatibility between the Kindle and the network’s capabilities or security settings. Amazon’s connection guidance notes that Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi. It also says Kindle models released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. These limits can make a network unavailable to a particular Kindle even when other devices connect successfully.

What to check What to do What the result tells you
Airplane mode and Wi-Fi Turn Airplane mode off and confirm that the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi. If Airplane mode was on or Wi-Fi was disconnected, the Kindle could not use the normal wireless update route.
Network name and password Check that the selected network is the intended one and re-enter its password if needed. A connection attempt to the wrong network or with incorrect credentials will not establish the connection needed for an update.
Band and security settings Check whether the network uses 6 GHz. For a Kindle released before 2021, also check for 5 GHz or WPA3 restrictions. A network setting unsupported by that model can explain why another device connects while the Kindle does not.
Signal strength Move closer to the router and try connecting again. If the Kindle connects nearer the router, the original location may have had insufficient signal.
Temporary router or device problem Restart both the Kindle and router, then try the Wi-Fi connection again. This checks whether a restart clears a temporary connection problem; it does not change model compatibility.
Whether the network is the obstacle Try a phone hotspot or manually add a network, as Amazon suggests. Amazon says that if a hotspot works, the issue is with the network rather than the tablet.

Once Wi-Fi works, return to Amazon’s live software list for the correct model and confirm which version is available. If the software still does not arrive automatically, manual installation is the supported alternative. Amazon presents a factory reset only as a later troubleshooting measure if other steps fail; it should not be the first response to an update problem.

If the Kindle update appears tied to registration or an account

A Kindle that has trouble with account registration or its account state may need a different set of checks from a simple Wi-Fi failure. Amazon’s registration guidance recommends checking that the device time is correct, installing the latest available software, confirming Wi-Fi and current Amazon credentials, and restarting the Kindle.

These checks can help with a registration problem, but they do not prove that registration is why a particular feature is missing. Treat account status as one diagnostic branch only when the device is actually having account or registration trouble.

What to do when a feature is missing

Start by separating two questions: is the Kindle’s software current for its model, and does the specific feature apply to that model? A version mismatch is a sensible first check, but installing an update does not by itself guarantee that a feature will appear. Amazon’s general software list distinguishes models, while its general update instructions do not establish feature-by-feature eligibility, regional or account restrictions, server-side rollout rules, or timing.

  1. Name the missing feature precisely. A general description such as “my Kindle is missing something” is not enough to identify its requirements. Find the feature’s name and any official support information about it.
  2. Identify the Kindle model and generation. Feature support can only be checked against the particular device, not against “Kindle” as a whole.
  3. Compare the installed software with Amazon’s live model-specific entry. If the Kindle is behind, connect it to Wi-Fi or follow the manual installation steps above.
  4. Look for feature-specific official documentation or release notes. General software update instructions do not answer whether an individual feature is available on a given model, account, or location.
  5. Ask Amazon support if eligibility remains unclear. Provide the exact feature, model and generation, installed software version, and relevant account or location details so the question can be assessed specifically.

Without feature-specific official documentation, do not treat an update, a restart, or another Kindle owner’s experience as proof of compatibility. The available general update guidance cannot diagnose an unspecified feature or establish why it is absent.

Do not confuse an e-book update with device software

“Kindle update” can also mean a revised edition of a book delivered to a Kindle. That is content delivery, not an update to the e-reader’s operating software. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing says delivery of a book update can take a few days for most readers, requires wireless connectivity, and depends on the reader’s Automatic Book Update setting. Those conditions describe revised e-book files; they do not explain whether the Kindle device itself has installed its latest software.

If the device software is current but a particular book has not changed, check the book-update process and its Automatic Book Update setting rather than repeating firmware installation steps. If the Kindle software itself is behind, use the model-specific device update process instead.

Choose the right next step

  • The Kindle is offline or cannot connect: troubleshoot Wi-Fi, including Airplane mode, network details, signal, and model/network compatibility.
  • The Kindle connects, but its software is behind: allow the wireless update route, then use the official manual method if the latest version does not download automatically.
  • The version matches Amazon’s entry, but a feature is absent: check official documentation for that specific feature and device rather than assuming another update will add it.
  • A revised book is missing: investigate book delivery and Automatic Book Update, which are separate from device software.
