A Kindle ebook purchase gives you licensed access, not an unrestricted ebook file. Other ways to read a Kindle title have different rules: a publisher’s free promotion can last up to five days, Kindle Unlimited is a paid subscription with a changing catalog, and a public-library loan follows your library’s eligibility and loan terms. You do not need a Kindle e-reader; supported Kindle apps can also provide access.
Four different ways to get a Kindle ebook
The word “Kindle” covers several access models. Before choosing an option, identify whether you are buying a title, claiming a temporary promotion, borrowing through a subscription, or checking out a library loan. Those choices determine what you pay, how long access lasts, and what happens if the title leaves a catalog or the loan ends.
1. Buying a Kindle ebook
Amazon’s Kindle Store Terms of Use state: “Kindle Content is licensed, not sold, to you by the Content Provider.” In practical terms, a purchase grants a personal-use right under Amazon’s terms. It is not the same as receiving an unrestricted EPUB, PDF, or other ebook file that you can copy and use without platform restrictions.

Amazon says you can buy Kindle books from a Kindle e-reader or from its website and have the book delivered to a Kindle device. A Kindle e-reader is optional, however. You can use supported Kindle apps on other device types, subject to the app, account, operating-system, and marketplace rules that apply to you.

A purchased title normally remains associated with the Amazon account used for the transaction and is read through permitted Kindle software or devices. Do not treat the purchase as a promise that every title will remain available forever under every circumstance. The governing license, the title’s availability, your account status, and Amazon’s service rules all matter.
2. A publisher’s free promotion
A “free Kindle book” offer is usually a publisher-controlled promotion, not a permanent entitlement for every reader. Eligible authors and publishers using KDP Select can schedule a Free Book Promotion for up to five days during each 90-day KDP Select enrollment period. Amazon’s current KDP help describes that limit as “up to five days per 90-day KDP Select enrollment period.”
The title must be enrolled in KDP Select and available for sale. During the free promotion, the author earns no royalties on copies obtained through the offer. The exact dates, participating marketplace, and title eligibility are set by the publisher; a book that is paid today may be free only during a scheduled window.
KDP Select also includes digital-exclusivity obligations for participating publishers. That rule affects where the publisher may distribute the ebook; it does not give readers a general right to obtain any title for free whenever they choose.
3. Kindle Unlimited
Kindle Unlimited is a paid subscription, not an individual purchase and not the same thing as a free promotion. A member receives subscription-based access to titles included in the Kindle Unlimited catalog. Amazon’s current customer-help page says members can borrow up to 20 titles at a time with no due dates.
“No due dates” does not mean ownership. Your access depends on an active subscription and the title remaining in the catalog. Catalog membership can change, so check the current listing in the marketplace attached to your account before assuming a particular book is included. A title’s inclusion can also differ by country or marketplace.

You can read Kindle Unlimited books on Kindle e-readers or supported Kindle apps. The 20-title limit is an account limit stated by Amazon Customer Service in its current help information, accessed in 2026; Amazon may change that limit, so verify it when making a subscription decision.

Amazon’s Kindle help center provides a dedicated workflow for checking out and returning a public-library book. That establishes an Amazon-supported library process, but it does not mean every library, country, title, or account supports Kindle delivery.
Start with your own library catalog and look for a Kindle or compatible ebook option. Follow the checkout instructions shown by the library and any linked service, including the required sign-in and device or app selection. The library determines whether the title is available, how long the loan lasts, whether renewals are possible, and what happens when the loan expires. Those details cannot be stated universally because they vary by participating library and location.
When a loan ends, access is controlled by the library lending system rather than by a purchase license. Do not assume you can keep the book indefinitely, renew it automatically, or transfer it to another account.
How the four options compare
| Access method | Payment | Duration and access | Eligibility | Reading devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle purchase | One-time ebook purchase | Licensed personal-use access under Amazon’s Kindle terms; not an unrestricted file | Title availability, account, marketplace, and applicable service terms | Kindle e-reader or supported Kindle app |
| Free Book Promotion | No charge during the publisher’s promotion window | Access is governed by the Kindle license after the promotion; the offer itself is temporary | Publisher must qualify through KDP Select; title must be enrolled and available for sale; up to five days in each 90-day enrollment period | Kindle e-reader or supported Kindle app |
| Kindle Unlimited | Paid subscription | Subscription-based catalog access; up to 20 titles borrowed at a time according to Amazon’s current help; no due dates, but catalog membership can change | Active subscription and title inclusion in the reader’s marketplace | Kindle e-reader or supported Kindle app |
| Public-library loan | Usually governed by the library rather than an individual Kindle purchase | Library-set loan term, expiration, and renewal rules | Participating library, local availability, title licensing, country, and account requirements | Kindle delivery or app access when the library and marketplace support it |
Step-by-step: choosing and using each option
To buy a Kindle ebook
- Open the Kindle Store on a Kindle e-reader or use Amazon’s website for your marketplace.
- Check the title’s Kindle edition and the account or marketplace shown before completing the transaction.
- Complete the purchase through Amazon’s checkout flow.
- Choose or confirm the supported Kindle device or app destination when Amazon presents that option.
- Open the Kindle app or e-reader connected to the purchasing account and sync if the title does not appear immediately.
The important distinction is the result: you receive licensed access through permitted Kindle services, not an unrestricted ebook file.
To use a free promotion
- Open the title’s current Kindle Store listing during the publisher’s advertised promotion dates.
- Confirm that the displayed price is free before accepting the offer; dates and availability are title-specific.
- Obtain the book through the normal Kindle checkout or acquisition flow.
- Read it in a supported Kindle app or on a Kindle e-reader linked to the account.
If the price is not free, the promotion may have ended, may not apply in your marketplace, or may not be active for that title. Do not assume that a book advertised as free elsewhere is currently free for your account.

To use Kindle Unlimited
- Check whether Kindle Unlimited is offered for your Amazon marketplace and account.
- Review the current subscription terms and price before enrolling; the subscription is separate from buying an individual title.
- On a title page, verify that the book is currently marked as included in Kindle Unlimited.
- Borrow the title through the Kindle Unlimited flow and open it on a Kindle e-reader or supported Kindle app.
- Keep track of your borrowed-title count. Amazon’s current help states a maximum of 20 titles at one time.
If a title is removed from the catalog or your subscription ends, subscription-based access may no longer be available. A Kindle Unlimited borrow should not be treated as a permanent purchase.
To check out a public-library Kindle book
- Search your public library’s ebook catalog for the title.
- Confirm that your library offers a Kindle-compatible option for that title and that your account is eligible to borrow it.
- Use the library’s checkout instructions, including any required authentication or handoff to Amazon.
- Select the Kindle device or app option only when the library’s workflow offers it.
- Read the displayed due date, renewal policy, and return instructions. These are set locally and may differ for another title or library.
Because library systems and geographic rights differ, there is no single set of Kindle-loan steps or universal loan period that applies everywhere.
What “ownership” means for a Kindle purchase
People often ask, “If I buy a Kindle book, do I own it?” The precise answer is that you own the transaction right granted by the applicable license, not an unrestricted copy of the underlying ebook. Amazon’s terms describe Kindle Content as licensed, not sold.

- You should not assume you can extract, redistribute, resell, or use the content outside those permissions.
- Access can depend on the account, marketplace, title availability, and continuing operation of the relevant Kindle services.
- Buying a title does not require buying Kindle-branded hardware; supported apps can provide the reading experience.
This distinction also explains why a library checkout or a Kindle Unlimited borrow should not be described as ownership. Each is a different, time- or subscription-dependent permission.
Kindle-to-Kindle lending is not library lending
Amazon also documents a separate person-to-person lending feature for some purchased ebooks. Its KDP lending help says an eligible book may be lent once for 14 days, and the original purchaser cannot read that book during the loan.
That information comes from an Amazon KDP lending page surfaced in French and includes marketplace restrictions. It is therefore a qualified feature, not a guarantee that every title, account, or United States marketplace supports lending. Eligibility must be checked for the specific book and account.

This feature is unrelated to a public-library loan. Person-to-person lending is initiated by the purchaser for an eligible purchased title; a library loan is controlled by a participating library’s catalog, license, and checkout system.

Which option fits your situation?
You want permanent access to one particular book
Consider a purchase, while remembering that the purchase is licensed access rather than ownership of an unrestricted file. This is the clearest option when you want a title outside a subscription catalog or a library’s lending inventory.
You want to sample a book at no cost
Look for an active publisher Free Book Promotion. Verify the price and dates in your marketplace because the offer can end and is not available on demand for every title.
You read many included titles each month
Kindle Unlimited may be useful if the books you want are currently in its catalog. Compare the subscription cost with your reading pattern, and remember the 20-title borrowing limit and the possibility that catalog membership changes.
You want to avoid buying a book
Check your public library first. Availability, Kindle compatibility, loan length, renewal, and geographic eligibility are local questions, so use the library’s own catalog and instructions.
You want to lend a purchased book to another person
Check the title’s specific lending eligibility. If supported, Amazon’s documented model allows one 14-day loan and prevents the original purchaser from reading during that period. Do not confuse this with library borrowing or with sharing an account.

Common problems and what to check
The book is not free
Check whether the publisher’s promotion window has started or ended, whether you are viewing the correct marketplace, and whether the listing still displays a free acquisition option. Free promotions are scheduled by eligible KDP Select publishers and can last no more than five days in a 90-day enrollment period.
A Kindle Unlimited title cannot be borrowed
Confirm that your subscription is active, that the title is currently included, and that you are using the marketplace associated with your account. Catalog status can change, and not every Kindle Store title is part of Kindle Unlimited.
A library title does not offer Kindle delivery
Follow the library catalog’s compatibility information. The library may support another reading format, may not license the Kindle edition, or may restrict the title by country or account eligibility. Amazon’s existence of a library checkout workflow does not make every library or title compatible.
A purchased book is missing from a device
Check that the device or app is signed in to the Amazon account used for the transaction, then use its sync or refresh function. Also verify that you are viewing the correct marketplace and Kindle library. A purchase is tied to the account and permitted Kindle services rather than delivered as a freely transferable file.
You expect to read while a purchased title is lent
For an eligible person-to-person loan, Amazon’s KDP help says the original purchaser cannot read the book during the 14-day lending period. Wait for the loan to end before expecting access to resume.
