KasmVNC lets you view and control a Linux desktop or individual application through a web browser. You can install it directly on a Linux server or use it through Kasm Workspaces, but it is not a conventional VNC server: it does not implement the RFB protocol, so ordinary VNC viewer apps are not compatible. Plan around browser support, server and client resources, permissions, and how remote traffic will reach the host.
What KasmVNC does—and what it does not
Kasm Technologies describes KasmVNC as “the Linux desktop streaming service developed by Kasm Technologies.” It streams a full Linux desktop or an individual application to a browser. KasmVNC is used by open-source Kasm Workspaces container images, but it can also be installed directly on a server. Kasm Workspaces is a broader containerized streaming platform; it is not the same thing as the standalone KasmVNC server. See the KasmVNC overview.
Despite “VNC” in its name, KasmVNC does not follow the Remote Framebuffer (RFB) specification and does not support legacy VNC viewer applications. Use its browser client to connect; do not assume a desktop VNC client will work. The configuration documentation and official repository describe this distinction.
What you need on the server and client
Requirements differ by side of the connection. KasmVNC’s version 1.5.0 installation documentation lists 2 CPU cores and 2 GB of RAM as the server baseline. That is a published baseline, not a promise of adequate performance for every desktop, application, or number of users. The page lists these Linux distributions and architectures; verify the release-matched page and package before installing, since supported combinations can change.

These combinations and server baseline are from the KasmVNC version 1.5.0 installation documentation. The client guide is version 1.4.0 and recommends 4 CPU cores and 4 GB RAM for the device running the browser. It notes that lower-resource devices may work. That client guidance is not the server requirement.
Which browsers work
The version 1.4.0 client documentation prefers Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Chromium. Firefox is supported, though some features are unavailable. Direct Safari access is unsupported in the documented setup: Safari does not pass the Basic Authentication credentials through the required WebSocket connection. Check the client documentation that matches your installed release, especially if browser compatibility is central to your deployment. See KasmVNC browser client guidance.
The browser client includes controls for session sharing, clipboard direction, and keyboard shortcut translation. Shared users can be given read-only or read/write access. Seamless clipboard mode is available only in Chromium-based browsers; users of other browsers may need to use the clipboard control panel.

Install KasmVNC directly on a Linux server
The official Debian, Ubuntu, and Kali outline uses a distribution-matched package from the KasmVNC release assets. The steps below summarize that documented route; they are not a substitute for the exact commands and package instructions for your distribution and release.
- Download the KasmVNC package matching your Linux distribution from the project’s release assets.
- Install the downloaded package with
apt, following the distribution-specific instructions in the installation guide. - Add the operating-system user who will run the desktop session to the required certificate group, then reconnect so the new group membership takes effect.
- Start a session with
vncserver. On first launch, the setup prompts you to create a KasmVNC user and select a desktop environment. - Use the documented optional systemd user service if you need sessions to start at boot. The guide also covers multiple display IDs.
KasmVNC login credentials and Linux operating-system accounts serve different roles. The desktop process runs as the OS user who started the session; the browser user signs in with KasmVNC credentials and receives the permissions configured for that session.
Set permissions and plan network access
KasmVNC documents HTTPS Basic Authentication, with desktop rendering sent over WebSockets by default. Its permission levels govern what an authenticated browser user can do:

- Read: view the rendered session without keyboard or cursor input.
- Write: control the session, subject to server configuration.
- Owner: access developer API calls. Owner permission does not automatically include read or write access.
Permissions are one part of security; they do not replace decisions about who can reach the server or how it is exposed to a network. KasmVNC’s overview describes built-in data-loss-prevention features and routine penetration testing, but those are vendor statements, not an independent audit result for your deployment. Review the server security documentation and design access controls for your environment rather than treating product features as a blanket security guarantee.

WebSockets by default; WebRTC UDP is experimental
The server documentation describes WebRTC UDP as an experimental option, not a universal fix for remote connectivity. KasmVNC does not support TURN servers. Static NAT may work without TURN, and STUN is supported for address discovery; whether a connection works depends on the network conditions described in the server configuration documentation. Check those conditions before relying on WebRTC for users behind NAT.
Configuration locations
System-wide settings are in /etc/kasmvnc/kasmvnc.yaml; user overrides are in ~/.vnc/kasmvnc.yaml. Some settings can also be overridden with environment variables when enabled. Array settings have replacement behavior that can displace existing values, so consult the version-matched configuration reference before changing deployment-wide options.

Encoding, hardware acceleration, and performance
The version 1.5.0 video guide documents FFmpeg encoding with software options and optional VAAPI or NVIDIA NVENC hardware acceleration. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The guide characterizes H.264 as broadly supported by modern browsers, H.265 as more bandwidth-efficient at comparable quality, and AV1 compatibility as more variable across browsers and GPUs. It recommends checking client compatibility before making AV1 the only permitted codec.
According to the same video streaming guide, automatic mode probes available encoders, selects an option supported by both client and server, and prefers hardware encoding when available, with software fallback when acceleration is unavailable. Actual responsiveness and image quality depend on the server hardware, drivers, codec support, browser, workload, and configuration; the documentation does not establish a guaranteed latency or performance level.
Choose a host that fits the workload
KasmVNC needs a Linux computer or hosted Linux server to run the desktop session. For a self-hosted setup, a Linux mini PC is one possible always-on host, not a KasmVNC-specific recommendation. Check the processor, memory, amd64 or arm64 architecture, supported Linux distribution, storage, network connection, and expected desktop workload; the published 2-core, 2-GB baseline alone cannot establish that a particular small computer will perform well.

A cloud or VPS server is another possible host if you do not want to maintain local hardware. Compare Linux image availability, assigned compute, network reachability, and the administration and security work you are prepared to handle. The documentation does not identify a universally suitable host or provider.
When KasmVNC is a good fit
KasmVNC makes sense when you want to deliver a Linux desktop or app through a supported browser and are prepared to manage a Linux host, credentials, permissions, and network access. It is a poor fit if your workflow depends on a legacy VNC viewer, your users must connect directly with Safari in the documented setup, or your network requires TURN for WebRTC. Before choosing it, decide whether you want a direct server installation or the broader Kasm Workspaces platform, whether sessions need to be read-only or interactive, and whether your clients and encoding choices match the deployment.
