Jellyfin does not turn an ordinary library playlist into a television channel by itself. Its Live TV area expects a tuner feed plus separate programme-guide data. A pseudo-live channel generator, such as ErsatzTV or Tunarr, supplies both: it schedules your media into a linear stream, publishes an M3U playlist for the channels, and publishes XMLTV data describing what is playing. Jellyfin then displays those feeds as Live TV.
What “pseudo-live TV” means in Jellyfin
Pseudo-live TV is a scheduled, linear-style channel made from on-demand files in your own library. Instead of choosing a film or episode whenever you want, you open a channel and join whatever is playing at that point in its timetable. The channel may run continuously, repeat a schedule, or move through a playlist of films, episodes, music videos, or other media.
Jellyfin is the viewing and recording server in this arrangement, not normally the component that invents the channel timetable. Its official Live TV feature is designed around a tuner source and programme-guide information. Supported tuner inputs include HDHomeRun and M3U; guide providers include XMLTV and Schedules Direct. Guide entries must be mapped to the corresponding tuner channels before the guide can describe them correctly.

The three layers: content, channel feed, and guide
Keeping these layers separate makes the setup easier to understand and troubleshoot.

The M3U URL is therefore not a guide. It tells Jellyfin which channels or stream addresses exist. The XMLTV URL is not a video stream. It describes programmes and their times so Jellyfin can render listings, programme details and the correct item at a given point in the schedule.
How playlists become a channel timetable
In ErsatzTV, a playlist is an ordered list that can contain collections, shows, seasons, episodes, movies, music videos, other video, songs, images and remote streams. A playlist can be added to a schedule as a schedule item. The schedule is what places that content into a channel’s time flow.

Playlist items can use playback-order settings such as shuffle, chronological order or random order. Television content can use season and episode ordering. These choices affect the sequence the generator sends to the channel; they do not alter the files in your Jellyfin library.

“Play All” and nested collections
When “Play All” is enabled for a playlist item, the generator flattens that item. Every media item in the collection plays before the schedule advances to its next item. Without that behavior, a collection may be treated as one schedulable unit, depending on the generator’s configuration.
Whether an item appears in the EPG
ErsatzTV’s “Show In EPG” setting controls whether scheduled media from a playlist item receives an electronic programme-guide entry. Turning it off can be useful for filler or interstitial material that should play but should not clutter the guide. Turning it on gives viewers a named programme and time range in Jellyfin, provided the XMLTV data imports and maps correctly.
The practical mental model is: a playlist defines a content sequence or pool, a schedule assigns that content to a channel’s clock, and the EPG exposes the resulting programme information. A normal Jellyfin library playlist alone does not perform all three jobs.
How the ErsatzTV-to-Jellyfin handoff works
ErsatzTV provides two feed addresses in its interface. You enter the generated M3U address as a tuner source in Jellyfin and the generated XMLTV address as guide data. The two feeds should describe the same channel names and identifiers so Jellyfin can associate listings with streams.

- Build the channel in the generator. Add the media libraries that contain your films, series or other files. Create channels and assign playlists or collections to their schedules. Set ordering, start-time and EPG visibility options in the generator.
- Copy the feed addresses. In the generator’s interface, locate the generated M3U URL and XMLTV URL. Copy them exactly; they are separate addresses for separate purposes.
- Add the tuner in Jellyfin. In Jellyfin, open Dashboard, then Live TV, and add a tuner device. Choose M3U Tuner and paste the generator’s M3U URL into the playlist or tuner URL field. Save the device.
- Add guide data. In the same Live TV area, add TV Guide Data, choose XMLTV, and paste the generator’s XMLTV URL. Save the provider.
- Import and map. Let Jellyfin download the guide. If channels and listings do not line up, open the channel-mapping controls and associate each XMLTV guide entry with the matching tuner channel.
- Refresh and verify. Use Jellyfin’s guide refresh control after changing the generator’s schedule. Open Live TV, select a channel, and confirm that the current stream starts and that the guide shows the expected programme and time.
Labels can vary slightly between Jellyfin releases, but the roles remain the same: M3U under tuner configuration and XMLTV under guide configuration.
What you should see in Jellyfin
Once both feeds are accepted, the generated channels appear alongside other Live TV sources. The guide should show programme blocks at the times supplied by XMLTV. Selecting a current block starts the stream from the channel generator; selecting a future block displays its details until the scheduled start.
If you can see a channel but its guide is empty, the M3U tuner is working and the XMLTV provider or mapping needs attention. If the guide lists programmes but playback fails, XMLTV is working while the channel stream, URL reachability or media-transcoding path needs attention. Treating those as separate tests avoids repeatedly changing the wrong setting.
Troubleshooting channel and guide problems
Channels are missing entirely
- Confirm that the M3U URL was entered under an M3U tuner, not under the XMLTV guide provider.
- Check that the generator currently has active channels and that its server is reachable from the Jellyfin server.
- Re-save or refresh the tuner after changing channel definitions in the generator.
Channels appear but programmes are not listed
- Verify that the XMLTV URL was added as TV guide data.
- Run a guide refresh and allow the import to finish.
- Use channel mapping when the channel name or identifier in XMLTV does not exactly match the M3U channel.
- Check whether the relevant playlist item has “Show In EPG” disabled in ErsatzTV.
The programme title is wrong or the timing is unexpected
- Inspect playlist ordering and whether a collection is being flattened by “Play All.”
- Check the channel schedule’s start time, duration rules and time-zone settings in the generator.
- Refresh XMLTV after schedule edits; Jellyfin may still be displaying previously imported guide data.
Playback stops or fails at a programme boundary
Boundary failures can involve the channel generator, Jellyfin’s stream handling, or the FFmpeg path used for remuxing or transcoding. Test a current programme and a transition separately, and note whether Jellyfin is transcoding or remuxing the stream. Do not assume a guide problem merely because the failure occurs when the title changes.

ErsatzTV and Tunarr compared for this use case
Both projects can create scheduled channels from personal media, but their connection methods and documented behavior differ. The available documentation does not establish an overall winner, so choose based on the workflow and client mode you need.

The Tunarr boundary behavior is a reported, configuration-dependent caveat, not proof of a universal defect. If it affects your installation, compare direct-play and remux/transcode paths, keep both applications current, and use the project’s troubleshooting guidance before changing the channel schedule.

Jellyfin offers optional Live TV integrations for tuner systems such as NextPVR and TVHeadend. Those integrations connect Jellyfin to an external tuner or DVR platform. They are different from a pseudo-live generator, which creates channels from on-demand library media.

TVHeadend can also be connected through M3U and XMLTV without relying on a dedicated Jellyfin plugin, depending on the deployment. In every case, identify whether the external system is supplying real tuner broadcasts, scheduled library streams, or both; the Jellyfin configuration screens may look similar while the source behavior is different.

Server requirements and practical limits
Jellyfin’s quick-start guidance places the server application on the computer that serves the media. That computer must also be able to reach the channel generator if the generator runs separately. A mini PC is one possible hosting choice, but no minimum specification or particular model is established for pseudo-live TV here.
- Store the media libraries where the generator can index them and Jellyfin can read them.
- Keep the generator and Jellyfin network addresses stable enough that feed URLs remain reachable.
- Allow enough processing capacity for any transcoding or remuxing your clients require; direct playback and transcoding place different demands on the server.
- Plan for guide refreshes after schedule edits so the displayed EPG matches the current timetable.
There is no single channel count, reliability rate or performance figure that applies to every installation. Results depend on media formats, client devices, network conditions, schedule complexity and whether streams are remuxed or transcoded.
A simple decision checklist
- Choose a generator when you want linear channels made from your own library rather than manually selected playback.
- Choose ErsatzTV when its playlist and schedule controls, including ordering, “Play All” and EPG visibility, match your programming model.
- Evaluate Tunarr when M3U or HDHomeRun-style client connections are useful, while testing programme-boundary behavior in your own Jellyfin playback mode.
- Use M3U to deliver channel streams and XMLTV to deliver listings; never substitute one for the other.
- Expect to map channels and refresh guide data when names, identifiers or schedules change.
The bottom line on pseudo-live Jellyfin channels
A pseudo-live setup is a two-application workflow. The generator makes a timetable and streams its channels; Jellyfin imports the M3U tuner feed and the XMLTV guide, maps them, and presents the result in Live TV. Once you separate playlist order, channel scheduling, stream delivery and guide metadata, the system becomes predictable: change playback flow in the generator, change channel ingestion in the M3U tuner settings, and change programme listings through XMLTV refresh and mapping.
