Jackbox games use a host-and-controller model: one person runs the game on a supported computer or console and displays that screen, while everyone else joins at jackbox.tv with a phone or other internet-connected device. Players enter the room code shown by the host and use their browsers to submit answers; they do not run the game on their phones.
Only the host needs to own the game. Guests do not need a mobile app, an account, a separate copy, or a special controller. Regular player slots and Audience Mode depend on the specific title, so check that game’s listing before inviting a large group.
The basic Jackbox setup
A Jackbox session has three parts:
- Host device: The owner launches a Party Pack or another Jackbox title on a compatible computer, console or streaming platform.
- Shared display: The host shows the game screen on a television, monitor or shared video stream so everyone can see prompts, timers and results.
- Personal controllers: Each participant opens jackbox.tv in a browser, enters the four-letter room code displayed on the host screen and uses that device to respond.
The phone is a controller, not the machine running the game. The host’s copy handles the rules, graphics, scoring and lobby. A participant’s browser sends responses back to that host session.
Jackbox’s official how-to page summarizes the model as “Use phones as controllers.” It also states: “Only one person in your group needs to own a Jackbox product in order to host the game.” That one-copy arrangement applies to ordinary group play; guests do not buy or open their own copy.

Who needs to buy or install anything?
Only the host needs a game copy
The host purchases a Party Pack or individual Jackbox product, installs it on a device that can run it, and starts the chosen game. Jackbox describes these games as one-time purchases rather than subscriptions. Its support information notes an exception for Amazon Luna subscribers, whose access follows that service’s subscription terms.
Players joining the host’s room do not need to purchase the title. Do not ask every guest to download the same Party Pack: that is unnecessary for the browser-controller setup.
Players do not need a Jackbox mobile app
There is no required mobile app for the controller flow described by Jackbox. A current browser on a phone, tablet or computer is enough, and Jackbox says an account is not required. A special gamepad is also unnecessary for this model.

How to join a Jackbox game
- Wait for the host to launch a title. The host opens the Party Pack or product, selects a game and reaches its lobby.
- Find the room code. A short code appears on the shared game screen. It is generated for that room and is separate from any purchase or account information.
- Open the controller page. On your phone or another internet-capable device, open a browser and visit jackbox.tv.
- Enter the code and a name. Type the displayed room code, choose the in-game name requested by the title, and submit it.
- Confirm that you appear in the lobby. Keep the browser page open. The host starts the round after the expected players have joined.
- Answer from your device. Prompts, drawing canvases, voting buttons and other controls appear in the browser. The main screen remains the source of shared instructions and results.
Only the room code is needed to join. If the host is streaming publicly, the code should be sent privately to intended players and hidden from the public broadcast until the room is ready.

What the host must do
Before the session
- Install and update the chosen Jackbox product on the host device.
- Arrange a display or screen-sharing method that lets every participant read the game screen.
- Check the title’s regular player range and audience support before inviting people.
- For a remote group, decide whether to share the host screen through a video-conferencing service or use Steam Remote Play Together.
During the session
- Keep the game screen visible while players submit answers on their own devices.
- Read the room code aloud only to the intended group, or send it privately.
- Start each round after the expected players are visible in the lobby.
- Use any title-specific extended-timer, password or moderation settings when the game offers them.
The host’s internet connection carries the game session and the shared display. Players still need their own browser connections to submit responses.
How many people can play?
There is no single Jackbox player limit. The regular-player range is set by each game, and Audience Mode is a separate capability. Jackbox Support’s table dated October 14, 2025 lists examples such as these:

These are publisher-listed capacities, not independent tests. The practical question is not “How many people does Jackbox support?” but “How many regular players and audience members does this exact game support?” Check the current support entry for the title you plan to run because player ranges and catalog details can change.
Jackbox’s press kit also describes support for up to 10,000 audience members across current-generation titles. That is a broad product statement, not a guarantee that every game or mode accepts that many people. For planning a real event, use the per-game support table and the game’s own settings.
What is Audience Mode?
Audience Mode lets people participate after the regular player slots are full, but the audience’s powers vary by title and mode. Audience members may vote, add to vote totals, influence results, interact between rounds or participate as a collective team. They do not automatically receive a normal player slot or the same controls as regular players.

Audience participation is game-specific
A title marked as supporting an audience may still use that audience differently from another title. Drawful 2, for example, is listed with audience support, while Fibbage is listed without it. The support flag tells you that an audience exists; it does not describe every action audience members can take.

Streamer-mode example
In Poll Mine’s streamer mode, the audience can vote and guess as one group against streamer players. This illustrates why “audience” should not be treated as a second set of ordinary player slots: the audience can act collectively and affect the outcome without joining the regular roster.
How to plan a large group
- Choose the game first, then verify its regular-player maximum.
- Confirm that Audience Mode is marked as supported for that title.
- Read the title’s instructions to learn whether audience members vote, submit input, or act as a team.
- Tell overflow guests that they are joining as audience members, not as regular players, so expectations match the game’s rules.
Can you play Jackbox remotely?
Yes. Remote players use the same browser-controller process; the difference is that the host’s game screen is transmitted to everyone else. Jackbox describes two common approaches:
Screen sharing
The host runs the game locally and shares the game window through a video-conferencing service. Each participant watches the shared screen and independently opens jackbox.tv for the controller. Audio and video settings belong to the conferencing service, while the room code and game state remain in Jackbox.
Steam Remote Play Together
When the host’s platform and title support it, Steam Remote Play Together can carry the host session to remote players. Participants still use a browser at jackbox.tv for the controller flow unless the specific setup provides another supported input method.

Protecting a remote room
- Send the room code privately to the people you invited.
- Avoid exposing the code on a public stream before the room is ready.
- Use a passworded room when the particular title provides that setting.
- Check whether the game offers extended timers; availability varies by title and can make remote responses easier.
Remote and international groups can use this arrangement, but every participant still needs a stable browser connection and a way to see the host’s screen.
Browser and device requirements
Jackbox’s supported-browser page, updated October 20, 2025, lists these minimum versions for the controller site:

Browser requirements are dated because support changes over time. If a controller will not load, update the browser or try a current browser on another device, then check Jackbox’s current supported-browser guidance.
Party Pack 11 requirements
Party Pack 11 adds title-specific hardware or permission needs. Hear Say requires microphone access, so the browser and device must permit microphone use. Cookie Haus requires GPU hardware acceleration. If either title fails to start or respond correctly, check those settings on the host or controller device as appropriate.

The code is rejected
- Compare every character with the code currently shown on the host screen; an old code belongs to a previous room.
- Confirm that you are on jackbox.tv, not in an unrelated app or page.
- Ask the host to return to the lobby or restart the round if the room has already closed.
A player appears in the lobby but cannot answer
- Keep the controller browser tab open and prevent the device from sleeping.
- Reload the page if the connection dropped, then re-enter the current room code if requested.
- Move to a stronger Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection if responses are delayed.
The audience cannot join
Verify that the exact title supports an audience. A game can accept regular players while offering no Audience Mode, as the Fibbage listing demonstrates. If audience support exists, check the game’s instructions for when audience members may enter and what controls they receive.

A remote player cannot see the game
The controller page cannot replace the shared game screen. The host must share the game window or use a supported remote-play route, and participants must join that stream or session as well as opening jackbox.tv.
Choosing a game for your group
Use these checks before buying or launching a title:
- Regular-player range: Match the game’s minimum and maximum to the number of people who want full turns.
- Audience support: Confirm that overflow guests can join as an audience.
- Audience behavior: Determine whether the audience votes, submits answers, affects scoring or acts collectively.
- Remote tools: For a distributed group, check screen-sharing compatibility, extended timers and any password option.
- Special requirements: Review browser versions and any microphone or GPU-acceleration requirement, especially for Party Pack 11 titles.
This checklist prevents the most common mismatch: inviting more regular players than the selected game allows, then discovering that the title has no audience support.
The short version
One host runs and displays the game. Everyone else joins the host’s room in a browser at jackbox.tv and uses a phone or similar device as a controller. Guests do not need the app, an account, a special controller or their own purchase. Regular slots, audience behavior, remote options and technical requirements all depend on the specific Jackbox title, so verify those details before the session begins.
