Start with your intended J-1 exchange category, then use the U.S. Department of State’s BridgeUSA Designated Sponsor Organizations By Program directory. Filter for that category, contact a listed organization directly, and confirm that it accepts applicants like you for your activity, dates, host site and country. Only a State Department-designated sponsor can issue Form DS-2019, the Certificate of Eligibility needed to support a J-1 visa application. A directory listing is not an admission decision and does not guarantee a visa.
What is a J-1 program sponsor?
A J-1 sponsor is an organization designated by the U.S. Department of State to administer a particular exchange-visitor category. The sponsor evaluates applicants, administers the program and, after acceptance, issues Form DS-2019. That form is the basic document used to support an application for J-1 status and a J-1 visa.
The Department states: “Only State Department-designated sponsors are authorized to issue the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status (Form DS-2019), which is the basic document to support an application for an exchange visitor visa (J-1 Visa).” You can read the Department’s explanation on its BridgeUSA Program Sponsors page.
A university, employer, placement agency or recruiting website may host or recruit you without being the designated sponsor. Before paying an application fee or relying on promises about a visa, identify which listed organization will actually issue your DS-2019.

How do I find a J-1 visa sponsor?
1. Identify the exchange category first
Do not begin with a convenient company name or a state. Begin with the activity you intend to undertake. The Department of State’s participant resources describe 15 exchange categories, including:
- Au Pair
- Camp Counselor
- College and University Student
- Intern
- Professor
- Research Scholar
- Short-Term Scholar
- Specialist
- Summer Work Travel
- Teacher
- Trainee
The remaining categories have their own eligibility rules and program pages. Use the category that accurately describes your planned activity; a sponsor authorized for one category is not automatically authorized for another. The Department’s participant page provides the category list and application sequence: BridgeUSA Participants.
2. Search the official sponsor directory
Open the Designated Sponsor Organizations By Program search. Select your category. You can also enter a sponsor name or choose a state, but those fields are optional. Searching by category is the critical authorization check.

A result shows that an organization is designated for the displayed category at the time you access the directory. It does not show whether the organization has places available, accepts applicants from your country, approves your proposed host or charges a particular fee.
3. Save the listing details and open the sponsor’s own information
Record the organization’s exact name, category and contact details from the result. Follow its official website or telephone information and request current written requirements. Department guidance says participants should contact sponsors directly for specific program details and application requirements; directory information cannot answer those individual questions.

How can I tell if a J-1 sponsor is authorized?
Authorization is category-specific. Check that the exact organization named in your proposed agreement appears in the BridgeUSA directory under the category you need. Similar names, a host employer’s branding or a recruiter’s claim are not substitutes for the listing.
Check who issues Form DS-2019
Ask plainly: “Will your organization issue my Form DS-2019?” If the answer is that a school, employer or intermediary will issue it, ask which State Department-designated organization is responsible. A host or placement company can work with a sponsor, but only the designated sponsor has authority to issue the form.

The directory is dynamic. Contact details, category designations and operating arrangements can change. Recheck the live listing immediately before submitting documents or money, and ask the sponsor to confirm that it is accepting applications for your intended dates.
What should I ask a potential sponsor?
Contact each serious candidate directly. Use a written email as well as a call when possible, so you have a record of the answers and documents supplied.
Eligibility and applicant fit
- Are you accepting applicants in my exact J-1 category?
- Do you accept applicants who are citizens or residents of my country?
- Do my age, education, language ability, employment history or other category requirements fit your current rules?
- Can you sponsor my intended activity, host organization and proposed dates?
Program operation
- What steps are required for screening, interviews and approval?
- Which documents must I submit, and in what format?
- What are the application deadlines and expected processing times?
- Where will the program place participants, and can you support the specific state or site I have in mind?
- What orientation, monitoring, emergency assistance and routine participant support do you provide?
Money and contractual terms
- What is the complete sponsor fee, and which charges are paid to third parties?
- When is each payment due?
- Which amounts are refundable if the application is refused, withdrawn or delayed?
- Are insurance, housing, transport, background checks or other services mandatory or optional?
There is no universal fee, deadline or document list that applies to every category and sponsor. Get the current totals and terms from the organization you are considering rather than relying on an old blog post or a recruiter’s estimate.

Does a sponsor’s state determine where I can work or study?
No. The address shown in the directory is the sponsor’s official location. Many designated sponsors place participants at host organizations elsewhere in the United States. A listing in one state therefore does not, by itself, limit you to that state.

Tell the sponsor your intended host, campus, employer or geographic area and ask whether it can place and monitor participants there. The sponsor must confirm geographic reach, local support and any restrictions that apply to your category. Never infer nationwide coverage merely from a directory result.
Can I choose any J-1 sponsor?
You can compare listed sponsors, but you cannot treat every listing as interchangeable. A sponsor must be designated for your precise category and willing to accept your profile and proposed program. It may also require you to use particular host arrangements, insurance, orientation or reporting procedures.
Use these comparison criteria when two or more organizations appear suitable:

What happens after I select a sponsor?
The sponsor search is one stage in a larger process. The Department’s participant path is:
- Choose the exchange program and category. Define the activity, host and dates you are seeking.
- Find a designated sponsor. Use the official directory and verify category and fit directly with the organization.
- Apply to the sponsor. Complete its screening and submit the requested documents, fees and host information.
- Receive Form DS-2019 if accepted. The designated sponsor issues the form after approving your participation and completing its required checks.
- Apply for the J-1 visa. Follow the Department’s visa instructions and the procedures of the U.S. embassy or consulate handling your application.
A listing does not mean you have been accepted. Even an issued DS-2019 supports a visa application; it is not the same as a visa approval. The consular process remains separate.
Examples of category-specific listings
The directory records each organization by category, so one organization can appear several times while another appears only once. For example, directory results have shown:

These entries demonstrate why category filtering matters. They are examples of directory records, not endorsements, guarantees of current openings or evidence that an individual applicant qualifies. Confirm the live record and current program terms with the organization.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Relying on a recruiter as the sponsor
A recruiter may introduce you to a host or submit paperwork, but that does not establish authorization. Ask for the designated organization’s exact legal name and verify it in the Department directory. Confirm who signs and issues DS-2019.

Choosing by state alone
The listed address is not a placement map. Explain your intended location to the sponsor and obtain a clear answer about geographic service and local support.
Assuming a listing means acceptance
Designation proves authority to administer the category, not capacity, eligibility or admission. You still must complete the sponsor’s application and screening.
Using old fees or deadlines
Fees, refund policies, deadlines, required materials and available places are sponsor-specific and can change. Request the current schedule in writing before paying.
Confusing DS-2019 with a visa
DS-2019 is the eligibility document issued by the sponsor. You must still follow the separate J-1 visa application process at a U.S. consulate or embassy.
What if the sponsor will not respond or does not resolve a problem?
First, keep copies of your application, payment records, emails and the sponsor’s published contact details. Send a concise written request identifying your category, participant or application number, dates and the specific remedy you need. Allow a reasonable period for a response and try the sponsor’s listed telephone number.
