Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) improves lithium-ion battery testing by measuring the small amounts of heat a cell produces or absorbs while held at an essentially constant temperature. Paired with electrochemical measurements, that heat-flow signal can help researchers investigate charge and discharge behavior, self-discharge, parasitic reactions, and other processes inside a working cell. It complements capacity and safety tests; it does not replace them or identify a failure mechanism on its own.
How does isothermal microcalorimetry test a lithium-ion battery?
An IMC instrument keeps a battery cell in a controlled, near-constant-temperature environment and measures heat flowing between the cell and its surroundings. The result is a heat-flow trace over time. Researchers can align that trace with measurements such as voltage and current to see how thermal behavior changes during a test.
A 2026 review by Arnot and colleagues, Isothermal Microcalorimetry for Battery Characterization in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society, describes IMC as capable of quantifying heat flow in functioning systems with microwatt-or-better accuracy and precision. That figure describes the method as reviewed, not a guaranteed specification for every instrument or experiment.
- Control the thermal conditions. Place the cell in a calorimeter and allow the system to reach stable conditions. The cell operates while its temperature is held essentially constant.
- Run the electrochemical protocol. Apply the chosen charge, discharge, rest, or other test procedure while recording the cell’s electrochemical behavior.
- Record and interpret heat flow. Compare the thermal trace with the electrochemical data, accounting for calibration, baseline behavior, and the test setup’s response time.
What can battery microcalorimetry detect?
Heat is a composite signal: it can reflect thermodynamic and kinetic effects, structural changes, and side reactions. IMC is most useful when a research question connects heat flow to a defined cell condition or electrochemical event.

Charge and discharge effects
Heat-flow data can help characterize thermal contributions during charging and discharging and how they vary with state of charge. Not all measured heat indicates damage: reversible entropic effects and irreversible polarization-related heat can both contribute to the trace.
Parasitic reactions and self-discharge
Researchers can use calorimetry to investigate heat associated with parasitic reactions as a function of voltage, temperature, chemistry, time, and state of charge. A 2014 study describes measuring self-discharge heat and distinguishing cells with different self-discharge behavior. These are laboratory measurements, not a direct consumer self-discharge rating.

A 2016 study paired IMC with electrochemical measurements to investigate reactions involved in forming the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). This illustrates how heat can provide a complementary signal for chemical processes occurring inside an operating cell.

A 2025 study examined calorimetric heat flow and surface temperature as non-invasive approaches using commercial 18650 lithium iron phosphate (LFP)/graphite and 21700 nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide (NCA)/silicon-graphite cells. Its abstract reports potentially greater effectiveness for LFP, equivalent results for NCA and graphite electrodes, and a possible need for an electrode-composite model for silicon-graphite. Those findings are specific to the study; they do not establish a universal IMC-based state-of-health measurement.

Thermal characterization and design
Heat-flow measurements can contribute to thermal optimization, but they are only one part of battery thermal characterization. Other methods target properties such as heat capacity and thermal conductivity, and may use in-situ or ex-situ measurements.
Can calorimetry prove that a battery is degrading?
No single heat-flow feature proves a unique degradation mechanism. The trace combines multiple thermal contributions, including reversible entropic effects, polarization, and potentially parasitic reactions. Where the study design allows, researchers separate these contributions and interpret them alongside electrochemical data and other relevant measurements. Without that context, a change in heat flow is evidence of changed thermal behavior, not a diagnosis by itself.

What limits the accuracy and usefulness of an IMC result?
Baseline and calibration
Small signals make stable thermal conditions, calibration, and careful baseline interpretation important. A 2024 systematic review of battery thermal properties emphasizes heat-loss calibration, benchmarking with standard samples, and rigorous uncertainty analysis for accurate thermal-property measurements.

The calorimeter and cell holder have thermal inertia, which can smooth rapid heat-flow changes and limit time resolution. Kunz and colleagues’ 2022 study reported a 3.6-times-faster time response for its optimized cell holder and processing method compared with its state-of-the-art comparison setup. That is a result for the study’s setup, not a general specification for IMC instruments.

Chemistry and cell format
Results can depend on electrode chemistry and cell design. Published work spans different chemistries and commercial cell formats, so a finding from one cell type should not automatically be generalized to another.
