Plastic can be made from plant sugars, starches, oils, cellulose, and other biomass. Manufacturers either extract or process natural plant polymers, turn biomass into chemical building blocks for plastics, or make polymers through microbial processes. The result is not automatically biodegradable: “bio-based” describes the source of the material’s carbon, while “biodegradable” and “compostable” describe how it behaves under specified conditions.

What plants are used to make plastic?

Plants store carbon in sugars, starches, oils, and structural materials such as cellulose. These become feedstocks for plastics. Examples include sugarcane and other agricultural sugar sources, starch-rich crops, cereal and oil crops, wood, and cellulose-rich plants. Producers may also use organic waste or by-products such as sugarcane bagasse, used cooking oil, and tall oil.

Waste and residue feedstocks can make use of materials that already exist, but they are not an unlimited supply. The European Commission Joint Research Centre notes that such streams are scarce and compete with other uses. The choice of feedstock therefore matters both for production scale and for environmental impacts.

How is plastic made from plants?

There is no single factory process. Broadly, manufacturers either process plant polymers directly or convert biomass into ingredients from which polymers can be made.

Fermenting sugars into plastic building blocks

One familiar route starts with sugars from starch- or cellulose-rich feedstocks. Microorganisms ferment the sugars into lactic acid, which can then be converted into polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is a distinct polymer, not simply ordinary fossil-based plastic made with a different source of carbon.

Using microorganisms to produce polymers

Microorganisms can also produce polymer families such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from suitable feedstocks. The feedstock and production conditions vary; the general category does not imply that every PHA product has identical properties or disposal requirements.

Making drop-in plastics from biomass-derived ingredients

Biomass can be converted into chemical intermediates and then used to make plastics chemically identical to familiar fossil-derived polymers. Bio-PE and bio-PET are examples. Because their chemistry matches conventional polyethylene or PET, they can fit existing uses and may be recyclable with matching fossil-based plastics where local systems accept them.

Processing natural polymers

Some plant materials contain polymers that can be extracted or processed directly into plastic-like materials. These routes differ from fermentation and from making a chemically identical drop-in polymer. The finished material’s properties and end-of-life route depend on its specific composition.

What do bio-based, biodegradable, and compostable mean?

These labels describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Term What it describes What it does not establish
Bio-based Some or all of the material’s feedstock carbon comes from biological resources rather than fossil raw materials. Whether the plastic biodegrades, composts, or is recyclable in a particular local system.
Biodegradable The material can break down through biological activity under particular conditions. A guaranteed timeframe or breakdown in any setting, such as soil, water, or a home compost pile.
Compostable A narrower end-of-life claim: the material is designed to break down under specified composting conditions. That it can go in every composting system, or that it belongs in conventional plastic recycling.

The European Commission puts the distinction plainly: “Bio-based plastics are fully or partially made from biological resources, rather than fossil raw materials.” It also says, “They are not necessarily biodegradable or compostable.” Conversely, a biodegradable plastic can be made from fossil feedstocks. A plant-derived plastic may be durable for its intended use rather than designed to break down.

Three broad types of bio-based plastics

The Joint Research Centre groups bio-based plastics by how biomass enters production:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Attributed or certified materials: biomass is co-fed into existing fossil-based processes, and a share of the output is attributed to the biomass input.
  • Drop-in materials: the plastic is chemically identical to a fossil-based polymer, as with bio-PE or bio-PET.
  • Dedicated bio-based plastics: biomass is used to make polymers with distinct chemical structures or properties, such as PLA or PHA.

Can plant-based plastic go in recycling or compost?

Follow the product’s disposal instructions and the rules of the collection system where it is used. A “plant-based” label alone does not identify the correct bin.

Recycling

Drop-in bio-PE and bio-PET may be recycled alongside chemically matching fossil-based plastics if the local recycling program accepts them. PLA, PHA, and starch blends are generally not compatible with conventional plastic waste systems and may require separate handling. Do not put a compostable plastic in conventional plastic recycling unless local guidance specifically permits it: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that compostable plastics can disrupt or contaminate that stream.

Industrial and home composting

Commercial or industrial compostability does not mean home compostability. The EPA says ASTM D6400 and D6868 specify commercial compostability. It also states: “There are currently no ASTM standard test methods in place for evaluating the ability of a plastic to compost in a home environment.” Local commercial composters may not accept compostable plastics, so check whether they collect the specific item.

The European Commission says compostable plastics typically decompose in industrial composting facilities and need collection. Its policy framework is a non-binding communication, not a comprehensive EU law; the Commission states, “There is currently no EU law in place applying comprehensively to bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics.”

Are plant-based plastics better for the environment?

There is no universal answer. Replacing fossil feedstocks can reduce lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions, but the result depends on the crop or other feedstock, how it is grown and processed, and what happens to the product at end of life. Land and water use, biodiversity impacts, eutrophication, and competition with food crops can offset benefits. The European Commission and Joint Research Centre emphasize sustainable sourcing and lifecycle assessment rather than assuming that a bio-based label guarantees an environmental advantage.

These poly pellets enhance the sensory experience, improve overall comfort, and bring you a different, calming tactile sensation.

When comparing materials, consider the feedstock, polymer chemistry, performance required for the product, lifecycle impacts, disposal infrastructure, cost, and technology maturity. Residues and waste can be useful inputs where available, but competing demand and limited supply constrain them. Compostability offers no practical advantage if the item is not collected by a suitable facility; a recyclable drop-in material likewise depends on local acceptance.

How large is the plant-based plastics sector?

Published figures use different dates and measures, so they should not be combined as if they described one consistent time series.

Source and date Reported figure What it measures
European Commission Joint Research Centre, 2026 Around 0.5% of global plastics volume in 2025; estimated capacity of 2.3 million tonnes, with potential capacity of 4.7 million tonnes by 2030. The approximately 0.5% figure is for bio-based and biodegradable plastics together. The 2030 figure is potential capacity, not confirmed production.
European Environment Agency, 2023 data 2 million tonnes of global bio-based plastics capacity. Capacity in 2023, reported as less than 1% of global plastics production.
European Environment Agency, 2023 1.12 million tonnes, or 45% of the bioplastics market. Packaging’s share of the market in 2023.

The Joint Research Centre reports that bio-based plastics are generally 1.5 to 2 times more costly to produce than fossil-fuel-based plastics; this is a broad comparison, not a price for every resin or plant. The European Environment Agency also notes limitations in source transparency, a break in its 2015–2016 data series, and a discrepancy in 2021, which make direct year-to-year comparisons less certain.
