Antimony is usually recovered from ore by separating antimony-bearing minerals from waste rock, then extracting the metal through a route suited to the ore’s grade and mineralogy. For stibnite, the main ore mineral, that can mean roasting to make an oxide for reduction, smelting, liquation, or iron precipitation. Leaching followed by electrowinning is another documented option. These are alternative flowsheets, not steps every mine uses in sequence; the crude metal is refined afterward to remove impurities.
From ore to metal: the main stages
Antimony processing has two distinct goals: first, make a feed richer in antimony; then extract and refine the metal. Concentration does not itself turn ore into metal. A producer’s exact flowsheet depends on the mineral mix, grade, liberation, associated metals, and impurity profile of its feed.
- Prepare the ore. Ore is crushed and ground to expose antimony-bearing minerals. Stibnite (Sb2S3) is the primary antimony ore mineral, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), although its Professional Paper notes that more than 100 other minerals also contain antimony.
- Concentrate the minerals where appropriate. Froth flotation can separate stibnite-rich particles from gangue, the unwanted minerals in the ore. The resulting concentrate is a more antimony-rich feed for extraction, not finished metal.
- Select an extraction route. Depending on the feed, a plant may roast material to form an oxide, smelt it, liquate rich sulfide material, use iron to precipitate antimony, or use a leaching and electrowinning route.
- Recover and refine the product. Extraction produces crude antimony, which can contain other metals and sulfur. Refining removes or separates impurities to achieve a more suitable metal product.
How antimony is concentrated
In flotation, finely ground ore is treated so that stibnite-bearing particles attach to bubbles and can be separated from much of the gangue. The details and effectiveness depend on the ore and process design. A USGS circular, Antimony Recycling in the United States in 2000, reported that flotation of low-grade stibnite ore could produce a concentrate containing more than 60 percent antimony, with recovery of up to 95 percent. Those are reported historical results, not a guarantee for a particular ore, a universal plant target, or a current industry-wide benchmark.

Which extraction routes can produce antimony?
Technical accounts describe several alternatives. Historical sources associate them with different feed grades and mineral types, but their grade ranges are guidance from those references—not universal cutoffs or modern design specifications. A real flowsheet may also need to account for mixed minerals and associated metals.

Roasting, fume capture, and reduction
Roasting conditions affect the oxide formed and how much antimony volatilizes. Antimony-bearing fume must be captured—technical descriptions mention equipment such as baghouses or precipitators—so that particulates can be recovered or reprocessed rather than simply escaping with the exhaust. The collected oxide can then be reduced with a carbonaceous reductant; flux is used in the process to help separate the molten crude metal from slag.
Why the flowsheet varies
Ore grade alone does not determine the process. Mineral form and liberation affect what can be concentrated and how it responds to treatment; gangue, associated metals, and impurities also influence which extraction and refining steps are suitable. A mine recovering antimony as a coproduct from a complex ore may therefore have a different process from one treating stibnite-rich ore.

To compare two process routes meaningfully, consider the feed each one treats, antimony recovery and product quality, how sulfur and impurity-bearing streams are handled, and the demands on energy, emissions controls, tailings, residues, and water management. The cited general technical accounts do not provide comparable current plant-level figures for all of these measures.
How crude antimony is refined
Crude antimony may contain arsenic, sulfur, iron, copper, and lead. The process descriptions cited by the USGS and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describe separating iron and copper into a matte, then using an oxidizing flux treatment to address arsenic and sulfur. Lead is more difficult to remove; lead-bearing material may instead be directed to lead-base alloys. The exact refining sequence depends on the composition of the crude metal and the desired product.

Mine wastes and exposure considerations
Not all antimony-bearing material becomes product. Tailings and waste rock can contain antimony, including at mines where it is not the main commodity being recovered. USGS accounts describe stibnite and sulfosalts in mine wastes releasing antimony into surface water and groundwater, with possible effects on soils, plants, and river sediments. Antimony-bearing dust and roasting fume are also process streams that require control and careful handling. High-concentration exposure can cause adverse health effects; the relevant health authority’s guidance is the appropriate source for detailed exposure information.
