iPhone message protection is a set of separate features, not a single scam shield. iMessage is end-to-end encrypted; SMS/MMS is not, and RCS is encrypted only when the required software and both carriers support it and the conversation shows an encryption indicator. Filtering, reporting, blocking and sensitive-image warnings each address different problems—and none proves that a sender or request is trustworthy.
Start with the message type, not the bubble color
Messages on iPhone can use iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS. The message type affects whether content is encrypted in transit and which service providers handle delivery. Blue bubbles indicate iMessage; green bubbles may indicate either RCS or SMS/MMS. A green bubble alone therefore does not tell you whether the conversation is encrypted.
| Message type | What the color tells you | Encryption in transit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| iMessage | Blue bubble | End-to-end encrypted, according to Apple | Apple says an encrypted conversation displays a lock and “Encrypted” at the top. |
| RCS | Green bubble | Conditional: encryption requires iOS 26.5 and support from both network providers. | Look for the lock and “Encrypted” label. Without it, do not assume the RCS conversation is end-to-end encrypted. |
| SMS/MMS | Green bubble | Not end-to-end encrypted | A green bubble does not establish that the message is encrypted. |
Apple describes iMessage encryption as protecting message content while it is sent between devices. That protection is about the transport of the content; it does not verify that a person is who they claim to be or that a link or request is legitimate. Apple’s guide to the differences between iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS explains the message types, while its iMessage overview describes the conversation indicators.
Apple announced a beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS on May 11, 2026, for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers. The rollout was described as taking place over time, so availability can depend on software, carrier and region. The practical test is the indicator in the conversation, not the fact that a message is green or that RCS is available in principle. See Apple’s announcement about the RCS beta rollout.

What iPhone’s message controls do
The controls are easier to understand when separated by purpose. Screening and categories organize incoming messages and affect notifications. Reporting sends information about suspected spam through an available reporting path. Blocking stops delivery from a particular identifier. Sensitive Content Warning blurs certain images or videos. None of these functions is a general-purpose system for establishing whether all messages are safe.
- Screening: separates messages from senders you do not know and gives you notification controls.
- Categories: can sort unknown SMS, MMS and RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions.
- Reporting: submits a suspected spam message where the reporting option is available.
- Blocking: stops messages from a specific blocked contact or number from being delivered.
- Sensitive Content Warning: warns about and can blur images or videos that may contain nudity.
Find and review messages from unknown senders
In iOS 26, Apple calls its feature Screen Unknown Senders. Messages from unknown senders can appear in an Unknown Senders area rather than the main conversation list, and you can control notifications for them. Apple says the feature is off by default in iOS 26 unless the earlier iOS 18 Filter Unknown Senders setting was enabled before upgrading. A message missing from the main list may therefore be filtered rather than absent.

- Open Messages.
- Tap Filters.
- Tap Manage Filtering to find Screen Unknown Senders and related filtering options.
- Check the Unknown Senders area if you are expecting a text that is not in the main conversation list.
- Review a message and mark its sender as known if appropriate.
Apple also documents sorting unknown SMS, MMS and RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions categories. Filtering does not apply to a sender you have replied to three or more times. Notification options vary by region: in most regions, notifications from unknown senders are on by default; the United States, Brazil and India offer category choices. Labels and behavior can change with iOS updates, so check the controls on your own device. Apple’s current instructions are in View conversations from unknown senders in Messages on your iPhone.
Filtering is an inbox and notification control, not a guarantee that a scam will be caught. Apple documents categories, exceptions and notification behavior, but does not publish a general success rate for catching scam texts. A message left in the main list is not thereby certified as safe.

Reporting spam and blocking a sender are different actions
Reporting gives Apple or, depending on the message type, a carrier information about a suspected spam message. Blocking is the separate action that prevents future delivery from a particular blocked contact or number. Reporting alone does not stop that sender from messaging you again.
| Action | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Report spam | For an iMessage, Apple says the report sends the message and sender information to Apple and permanently deletes the message from the iPhone. Reporting SMS, MMS or RCS may share information with the carrier and its affiliates, depending on carrier and region. | Reporting does not block the sender. The option may be unavailable for some SMS, MMS or RCS messages; Apple directs users to their carrier when it is absent. |
| Block sender | Stops messages from the specific blocked contact or number from being delivered. | A new phone number or email address is a different identifier. Apple advises adding a suspected blocked sender’s new number or email to the contact information. Group conversations cannot be blocked as a whole. |
Use the report option on the message when it is offered. If the goal is also to stop messages from that identifier, block it separately. For carrier-dependent reporting, follow Apple’s direction to contact your carrier if no reporting option appears. See Apple’s instructions for reporting spam and blocking senders in Messages.

What Sensitive Content Warning covers
Sensitive Content Warning can blur an image or video that may contain nudity and warn you before you view or send it. To check the setting, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Sensitive Content Warning. Apple says turning on Screen Time and Communication Safety can enable the warning automatically. Its documented coverage includes Messages and other Apple communication surfaces; details are in Apple’s iPhone instructions for sensitive-content warnings and personal-safety guide to sensitive image and video warnings.
This feature is specifically about images and videos that may contain nudity. It is not a detector for false claims, suspicious links, impersonation, payment requests or stolen credentials. Parents can review Screen Time and Communication Safety settings, but those do not turn the image warning into a general text-message scam filter.

What iPhone message protection cannot block
Impersonation or a dishonest request
Encryption can protect content in transit without proving the identity or honesty of the person sending it. A message that appears to come from a familiar person or organization can still contain a false claim, a fraudulent payment request or a harmful link. Contact Key Verification is a specialized iMessage security feature intended to help detect certain sophisticated attacks against iMessage servers and verify who is being contacted; it is not a routine scam detector for every conversation. Apple explains the feature in its Contact Key Verification security article and its iMessage security documentation.
Every phishing link or scam message
Unknown-sender filtering has documented eligibility limits and exceptions, while spam reporting depends on the message type, carrier and region. Apple does not claim that these tools intercept every malicious message, and it publishes no general measured percentage for how often iPhone protections block scams. Treat filtering and reporting as useful controls, not a promise of complete detection.
Unencrypted delivery
SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. RCS encryption depends on compatible software and support from both network providers, and Apple says the encrypted-conversation indicator appears when it is in use. When encryption matters, check the actual message type and indicator instead of inferring protection from bubble color.

Blocking applies to the identifier you blocked. If the same person switches to a new number or email address, do not assume the old block covers it; update the contact information and block the new identifier if necessary.
Risky text, URLs or financial requests
Sensitive Content Warning focuses on potentially sensitive images and videos, not the truth or safety of text, links or requests for money. It cannot assess whether an urgent message asking for credentials or a verification code is genuine.
Quick Recap
How to respond safely to a suspicious message
- Pause before acting. Do not tap a link or provide a password, payment, verification code or other sensitive information just because a message creates urgency.
- Verify through a separate channel. Contact the person or organization using a phone number, website or app you obtain independently—not contact details or links supplied in the suspicious message.
- Check whether the sender is known. If the message is filtered, inspect it in Unknown Senders before deciding whether to mark the sender as known. Do not treat its presence in the main list as proof of safety.
- Report and block as needed. Use the report option when offered, then block the identifier separately if you want to stop further messages from it.
- Check the transport when confidentiality matters. Identify whether the conversation is iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS and look for the explicit lock and “Encrypted” indicator.
Quick checks when something seems wrong
- An expected text is missing: open Messages, tap Filters, and check Unknown Senders. Review Manage Filtering and your notification settings; available labels and options may differ by iOS version and region.
- A green conversation appears: determine whether it is RCS or SMS/MMS. Green alone does not establish encryption; look for the lock and “Encrypted” label.
- You cannot report a message: reporting SMS, MMS and RCS depends on carrier and region. If the option is absent, Apple’s guidance is to contact your carrier.
- A blocked sender contacts you again: check whether the new message came from a different number or email address. The old identifier’s block should not be assumed to cover it.
- An image is blurred: review Sensitive Content Warning in Settings > Privacy & Security. The warning concerns potentially sensitive imagery, not whether the sender’s accompanying story or request is true.
