There isn’t one universal iPhone feature that detects every nearby accessory and turns it into a Dynamic Island hint. What you see depends on the task: AirPods can show a setup animation when you open their case near an iPhone; Bluetooth accessories are paired through Settings; an app can guide discovery of supported accessories; and supported apps can use Ultra Wideband (UWB) for distance and direction. Dynamic Island is a separate place for supported alerts and Live Activities—it is not a label for every proximity prompt.
Why an iPhone may respond to a nearby accessory
“Nearby accessory” can describe several different situations. You might be pairing something for the first time, connecting to an accessory already configured for your Apple Account, using an app to set up a product, or searching for a lost item. These tasks can involve different Apple features and different on-screen interfaces. Seeing one prompt does not mean the iPhone has detected every accessory around it, or that all such detection uses the same radio technology.
Apple documents the actions and results users can expect, but not one complete internal algorithm for every proximity decision. For example, Apple’s AirPods instructions say to open the case near the iPhone and expect a setup animation; they do not specify that UWB causes that animation. Keep the visible result and the documented feature distinct from assumptions about how the phone sensed it.

How the accessory experiences differ

What happens when AirPods are held near an iPhone
AirPods have a specific proximity setup flow. Apple’s consumer instructions are to go to the iPhone Home Screen, put the AirPods in their charging case, open the case and hold it next to the iPhone. A setup animation should appear. Tap Connect and follow any additional instructions shown for that model.
This is a convenient setup experience, not proof that the iPhone has started a Dynamic Island Live Activity. Apple describes the result as a setup animation. Nor does the consumer guide identify one particular radio or proximity algorithm as the cause. The user-facing action and result are documented; the private implementation details are not.
Apple also says AirPods can be set up automatically on supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That account-based convenience is distinct from seeing a new setup animation, and it does not mean every iPhone signed into an account will show the same prompt in every circumstance. Exact AirPods and iOS compatibility depends on the model. Apple’s current compatibility guidance lists iOS 26 or later for AirPods Pro 3; check Apple’s AirPods setup and compatibility guidance for the particular model and software version.
Pairing a Bluetooth accessory without a setup animation
Many headphones, speakers, keyboards and other Bluetooth products use the ordinary Bluetooth pairing flow rather than an AirPods-style animation. Apple’s instructions are to put the accessory into discovery mode, turn on Bluetooth in Settings, and select the accessory when it appears. The accessory maker may specify how to enter discovery mode, so follow its instructions if the device does not show up.

- Put the accessory into discovery or pairing mode according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if needed.
- Wait for the accessory to appear in the available devices list, then tap its name.
- Follow any pairing confirmation or passcode instructions shown on the iPhone or accessory.
Apple says the iPhone must be within about 33 feet (10 metres) of the Bluetooth accessory to pair. This is approximate guidance for Bluetooth pairing—not a guarantee of the maximum range at which every accessory can be noticed, connected or used. Walls, interference, the accessory design and the task being performed are not resolved by that single pairing-distance figure.
When an app handles accessory discovery
Some products are set up through their own app. For developers, Apple provides AccessorySetupKit, a framework that can let an app discover and configure supported Bluetooth or Wi-Fi accessories using a picker. The app supplies identifiers for supported accessories, and the user selects a matching nearby device in the setup flow. Apple says this approach can avoid broad Bluetooth or Wi-Fi access for discovery.
This is an app-mediated choice, not evidence that iOS automatically scans for every product or displays a standard system prompt for all accessories. If a product’s instructions direct you to its app, use that app’s setup process. The exact screens and requirements depend on the app and the accessory; AccessorySetupKit is a developer framework, not a setting a user turns on to make all nearby products appear.

What UWB and Nearby Interaction can—and cannot—explain
Ultra Wideband is relevant when a supported app needs spatial information about a participating device. Apple’s Nearby Interaction framework can report a peer’s distance and direction in supported interactions. That makes it useful for experiences that need more than the basic fact that a Bluetooth device is available, but it does not make UWB the explanation for every accessory prompt.

For third-party accessories, an app needs to establish a data link, receive the accessory’s configuration information and start a Nearby Interaction session. In other words, compatible hardware alone does not turn every nearby accessory into a direction-finding target: the participating app, supported accessory and configured session matter too.
Background use has additional conditions. Apple documents paths involving a Bluetooth Low Energy pairing or connection, or a Live Activity on iOS 18.4 and later, alongside required app capabilities. Those requirements apply to the developer’s Nearby Interaction implementation. They should not be generalized into a claim that a Bluetooth pairing prompt is a UWB session, or that Dynamic Island indicates UWB is active.
What Dynamic Island actually shows
On supported iPhone models, Dynamic Island can show alerts and Live Activities while the iPhone is unlocked. Apple’s examples include a Voice Memos recording, an AirDrop connection and Maps directions. An activity can be touched and held to expand it, swiped up to collapse it, or tapped to switch between two activities. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro models can show up to three Live Activities at once.

Those are examples of the kinds of activity Apple documents, not evidence that any nearby accessory is being detected through Dynamic Island. If a prompt appears near the top of the screen, identify what the interface actually is: a setup animation, a pairing sheet, a system alert or an app’s Live Activity. The reviewed Apple guidance does not equate generic accessory proximity detection with a Dynamic Island activity.

Dynamic Island is also limited to supported iPhone models. If an activity or prompt does not appear there, that alone does not show that an accessory failed to connect or that the phone cannot detect it. The interface may belong elsewhere in iOS, or the phone may not support that Dynamic Island presentation.

Find My answers a different question: where is an item that is already associated with the Find My network? For a supported AirTag, Apple’s Find Nearby or Precision Finding feature can provide distance and direction. Apple’s cited support guidance lists iPhone 15 and later, and an iPhone that supports Ultra Wideband, for the described Find Nearby experience. Confirm compatibility for the exact iPhone and item rather than treating those details as universal to every Find My accessory.
Precision Finding’s directional guidance can be affected by the environment. Apple warns that walls and objects between the iPhone and AirTag may affect performance. A weak or changing indication therefore does not by itself identify a pairing problem.
Certain third-party products can also be added to Find My. Apple directs users to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make the item discoverable, then use the Add Other Item flow in Find My. Support varies by product, so verify compatibility with the manufacturer. Adding an item to Find My is not the same as using Bluetooth settings to pair an accessory for audio or other general use.

What to try when the prompt or connection is missing
AirPods do not show the setup animation
Check that the AirPods are in their charging case, open the case and hold it next to the iPhone from the Home Screen. If the animation still does not appear, use Apple’s manual fallback: make the case discoverable, open Settings > Bluetooth, and select the AirPods when they are listed. Check the iOS requirement for the exact AirPods model, especially for newer models such as AirPods Pro 3.
A Bluetooth accessory is not listed
Confirm that it is in discovery mode, that Bluetooth is on in Settings > Bluetooth, and that the iPhone is within Apple’s approximate 10-metre pairing distance. If it remains absent, return to the accessory maker’s discovery-mode instructions; Apple’s general pairing guidance does not replace device-specific setup steps.
The product expects an app
Continue in the manufacturer’s app rather than looking for a universal iPhone accessory list. The app may use a scoped picker such as AccessorySetupKit, and the user-visible setup depends on the developer’s implementation.
You are trying to locate a lost item
Open Find My and use the locating option supported by that item. If Precision Finding is unavailable, check the iPhone and accessory compatibility, and account for walls or objects that can affect its guidance.
You see something in Dynamic Island
Check whether the displayed item is an alert or an ongoing app activity, such as the documented AirDrop, Maps or Voice Memos examples. Do not infer from its location alone that iOS is showing a generic nearby-accessory detection.
Which explanation fits what you are seeing?
- An AirPods animation appears when you open the case: that is the documented AirPods setup flow.
- A device name appears in Bluetooth settings: that is the ordinary Bluetooth pairing route.
- A product’s app presents a device picker: setup is being mediated by that app, potentially using a framework such as AccessorySetupKit.
- An app gives distance or direction to a participating device: Nearby Interaction may be involved if the hardware and session support it.
- Find My guides you toward a lost item: that is a locating flow, with Precision Finding available only for compatible combinations.
- An activity appears in Dynamic Island: identify the actual alert or Live Activity before connecting it to accessory detection.
Apple’s support and developer documentation describes these as separate experiences. For exact compatibility, consult Apple’s current guidance for the iPhone, accessory and iOS version involved: Connect your AirPods and AirPods Pro to your iPhone; Connect iPhone to Bluetooth accessories; Nearby Interaction; Dynamic Island and Live Activities guidance; and Find My guidance for AirTag and third-party items.
