Your iPhone’s everyday battery life depends on two things: how much charge its aging battery can store and how quickly your particular use consumes that charge. A lower Maximum Capacity generally means less stored energy, but it cannot tell you exactly how many hours your phone will last. Apple says overnight charging is safe; newer iPhones also offer a configurable charge limit if you want to trade some daily charge for less time spent at a high charge level.
What does iPhone Maximum Capacity mean?
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. It is a measure of how much charge the battery can hold relative to its original state—not a direct measure of today’s remaining charge, and not a promise about a specific number of hours of use. A lower figure usually means less stored energy is available between charges, but actual runtime also depends on how you use and configure the phone.
Battery capacity declines as a lithium-ion battery chemically ages. Apple explains that chemical age is affected by more than the time since manufacture: temperature history and charging patterns also matter. Its support guidance says, “A battery’s lifespan is related to its chemical age, which is more than just the length of time since the battery was assembled.” As a battery ages, both its capacity and its ability to deliver peak performance can decline. Apple’s battery and performance guidance describes these effects.
Capacity and runtime are related but not interchangeable. Two people with the same Maximum Capacity can see different time between charges because their usage and settings differ. Apple does not publish a universal conversion from a particular capacity percentage to a fixed number of hours. Its general expectation is that “For most customers, the battery in your iPhone should last the whole day,” but that is not an individual runtime guarantee. Apple’s battery maintenance guidance covers the factors that affect battery life.

Why is my iPhone battery draining so fast?
A phone that needs charging earlier than it used to may have less capacity than when new, may be doing more work during the day, or both. Settings and usage affect how quickly stored energy is consumed; temperature can also change what you experience. Battery Health gives useful context, but it cannot identify every cause of a particular day’s drain or predict a precise runtime for you.
Compare like with like before deciding the battery has suddenly deteriorated: consider whether your routine, settings, or the temperature around the phone differs from usual. A temporary change in runtime in cold conditions is not the same thing as lasting capacity loss. If battery life is no longer adequate in your normal use, use the health information and any iOS service recommendation as part of the decision about next steps.
How to check battery health and cycle information
The available details depend on the iPhone generation and software version. Apple says iPhone 15 and later running iOS 17.4 or later can show Maximum Capacity, cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. On iPhone 11 through iPhone 14, Battery Health & Charging is the place to check battery health information.

Apple’s battery and performance page explains the health and performance context.
Does charging overnight damage an iPhone battery?
No. Apple says it is safe to leave an iPhone connected to a charger overnight. The phone automatically stops charging when full and resumes if the charge level falls below 95%. There is no need to drain the battery completely before charging, and Apple says partial charging does not harm it. Apple’s charging and maintenance guidance explains these behaviors.
For people whose routine is predictable, Optimized Battery Charging can delay completing the final portion of a charge until nearer the time the phone is expected to be unplugged. In supported circumstances, charging may pause around 80% and finish later. This reduces how long the battery stays fully charged; it does not reverse chemical aging or restore capacity already lost.

When Optimized Battery Charging may not behave as expected
The feature needs to learn a routine. Apple says it requires 14 days to learn and at least nine charges of five hours or more in a location before it engages. Travel, an irregular schedule, or not meeting those conditions can mean it does not activate consistently. A charge that proceeds past 80% is not by itself evidence of a fault: the feature is adaptive, not a promise that every charging session will pause at the same level. Apple’s Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging guidance describes its learning requirements.

Should I set my iPhone charge limit to 80%?
Not necessarily. On iPhone 15 and later, you can choose a Charge Limit from 80% through 100% in five-percentage-point increments. A lower limit can reduce the time the battery spends at a high charge level, particularly if the phone is connected for long periods. The trade-off is straightforward: less charge is available for that day. Choose according to your routine rather than treating 80% as a universally best setting.
| Choice | What it does | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized Battery Charging | Uses a learned routine to delay completing the charge until nearer the expected unplug time. | Your charging and wake-up routine is reasonably consistent. | It may not engage consistently when you travel or your schedule is irregular. |
| Fixed Charge Limit below 100% | Caps the selected maximum at a user-chosen level between 80% and 95%, in five-point steps. | You want to limit time spent at a high charge level and have enough daily charge in reserve. | You begin the day with less available charge than at 100%. |
| 100% Charge Limit | Allows a full charge; Optimized Battery Charging is available at this setting. | You need as much charge as possible for a long or unpredictable day. | The adaptive feature, rather than a lower fixed ceiling, manages the final part of charging when its conditions are met. |
At a lower limit, the phone may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its state-of-charge estimate accurate. Apple permits changing the setting, so a limit need not be permanent: a lower ceiling may suit a day when you can charge again, while a higher one may make sense when you need more reserve. Apple’s guidance on Charge Limit documents the supported range and behavior.

Where to find charging controls
- iPhone 15 and later: Open Settings → Battery → Charging. Select a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in five-percentage-point increments, or choose 100% to use Optimized Battery Charging.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging to find Optimized Battery Charging. These models do not have the newer configurable Charge Limit described by Apple.
The setting names and paths differ by generation. If the newer Charge Limit control is not present, first check which iPhone you have rather than assuming the phone is missing a feature that it supports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How temperature affects battery life
Apple identifies an ambient temperature range of 62°F to 72°F (16°C to 22°C) as ideal. Using or charging an iPhone above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Avoid leaving the phone charging in a hot environment; heat exposure is a more consequential long-term concern than simply charging overnight under ordinary conditions. Apple’s battery maintenance guidance provides the temperature ranges.
Cold has a different effect: Apple describes reduced battery runtime in cold conditions as temporary when the battery returns to its normal temperature. If the phone seems to lose charge faster in the cold, distinguish that short-term behavior from lasting capacity loss rather than treating the two as the same problem.
Best Value
- Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
- Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger

If charging is limited above 80%, temperature may be the reason. Move the phone and charger to a cooler location and give the device time to return to its normal temperature range. Apple notes that temperature can affect charging behavior as well as battery lifespan.
What cycle-count figures do—and do not—tell you
A charge cycle is a way of counting battery use; it is not the same as one occasion when you plug the phone in. Apple’s published figures are design benchmarks for retaining 80% of original capacity under ideal conditions, not guarantees about what any particular phone will show at a given age or cycle count.
| iPhone generation | Apple’s stated design benchmark | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 14 and earlier | 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, under ideal conditions. | A benchmark, not a prediction for every battery or a replacement deadline. |
| iPhone 15 and later | 80% of original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles, under ideal conditions. | A generation-specific design target; actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. |
These figures differ by generation and assume ideal conditions. A cycle count or Maximum Capacity should therefore be read as context, not as a timetable. Use the phone’s actual runtime and performance, together with any iOS service message, to decide whether service would help. Apple’s battery and performance guidance gives the generation-specific benchmarks.

Charging accessories: what matters
A charger affects compatibility and charging speed; the official guidance cited here does not establish that a particular charger brand or wattage extends battery lifespan. Apple says wired chargers at 7.5 W or less and wireless chargers below 10 W can take longer to charge. A slower charge is a convenience and timing difference, not evidence that it restores worn capacity. Use a compatible charger suited to your iPhone and charging needs. Apple’s iPhone charging guide covers charging methods and speed context.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide what to change
- If you need a clear health baseline, check Battery Health using the Settings path for your model, then consider Maximum Capacity together with actual day-to-day runtime.
- If overnight charging is your concern, you can keep charging overnight. On a supported iPhone, use Optimized Battery Charging if its adaptive behavior fits your routine.
- If your phone is often connected for long periods, consider a lower Charge Limit only if the reduced starting charge will still cover your day. Raise it when you need more reserve.
- If charging pauses above 80%, check for heat and move the device to a cooler place before concluding that the battery or charger is defective.
- If ordinary runtime or performance is no longer adequate, or iOS indicates service, consult Apple Support about replacement options rather than relying on a universal percentage cutoff.
