Your iPhone’s built-in Clock alarms still sound when Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, or another Focus is on. Apple also says connecting headphones does not stop an alarm from playing through the iPhone’s built-in speakers. If an alarm is quiet or only vibrates, check that alarm’s selected sound and the separate Ringtone and Alerts volume setting; turning off Silent mode or Do Not Disturb is not the fix.
What Silent mode and Do Not Disturb change—and what they do not
Silent mode suppresses many sounds, including rings, alerts, and other sound effects. A Clock alarm is an explicit exception: Apple’s guidance says alarms are not affected by Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, or another Focus. In Apple Support’s words, “Do Not Disturb, the Ring/Silent switch, and Silent mode don’t affect the alarm sound.”
That means you can leave a Focus or Silent mode on overnight without relying on it to mute your alarm. The mode’s status is separate from the alarm’s configuration and loudness. If an alarm does not sound as expected, investigate the specific alarm and its volume rather than assuming the mode blocked it.

Apple’s product guidance says an alarm sounds through the iPhone’s built-in speakers as well as through connected headphones. The alarm is therefore not limited to the headphones just because they are connected.

What determines how loud the alarm is
The built-in Clock alarm’s loudness uses the Ringtone and Alerts level in Settings, not the status of Silent mode or Do Not Disturb. To adjust it, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider.
Apple also provides a Change with Buttons option in Sounds & Haptics. When enabled, the physical volume buttons can adjust the Ringtone and Alerts level. If you prefer to keep that alert level fixed while using the buttons for other volume changes, check this option’s setting rather than assuming the buttons always control alarm loudness.

- Alarm does sound, but is too quiet: raise Ringtone and Alerts in Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Button presses appear to change alarm loudness: check whether Change with Buttons is enabled.
- You are considering disabling Do Not Disturb or Silent mode: that is not required for a Clock alarm to sound.
How to set up or edit a regular Clock alarm
A regular Clock alarm is the one you add for a particular time, whether it is a one-time alarm or repeats on selected days. Its settings are managed in Clock and are separate from a Health sleep schedule.

- Open Clock and tap Alarms.
- Add an alarm or select an existing alarm to edit it.
- Set the time, then choose any repeat days and label you want.
- Choose a sound. If you want an audible alarm, do not leave the sound set to None.
- Set snooze and snooze duration if you want those options for this alarm, then save it.
Choosing a sound and setting the alert volume answer different questions: the alarm’s Sound setting determines what sound is selected, while Ringtone and Alerts determines its level. A high volume cannot make an alarm audible if its sound is set to None.

Why an iPhone alarm might only vibrate
If an alarm vibrates but has no audible sound, edit that alarm in Clock > Alarms and inspect its Sound setting. Choose a sound instead of None. Then, if needed, check the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Sounds & Haptics.
There is one relevant StandBy detail: Apple says alarm haptics are disabled while StandBy is in use. That concerns vibration; Apple’s guidance does not say that StandBy changes the rule that Silent mode and Do Not Disturb do not block an audible Clock alarm.

- No sound and no vibration: inspect the selected sound and alert volume.
- Vibration without sound: check whether Sound is set to None, then select a sound.
- Vibration is missing while StandBy is in use: Apple says StandBy disables alarm haptics.
Regular alarms and sleep-schedule wake-up alarms are different
An alarm added in Clock is not the same setup as the wake-up alarm associated with a sleep schedule. Apple says regular alarms are unrelated to a sleep schedule. The scheduled wake-up alarm has its own settings managed through Clock and Health sleep-schedule controls, including sound, alarm volume, snooze, and snooze duration.

If the alarm you need to change is tied to a sleep schedule, look for its wake-up alarm controls rather than assuming it is an ordinary alarm in the list. Changing one setup should not be treated as changing the other.

A quick check before relying on an alarm
When an alarm seems unreliable, use this order to isolate the setting that matters:
- Confirm which alarm you mean: a regular Clock alarm or the wake-up alarm attached to a sleep schedule.
- Open the appropriate controls and confirm the alarm’s time and, for a repeating regular alarm, its selected repeat days.
- For an audible alarm, make sure its Sound is not set to None.
- In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, set Ringtone and Alerts to a level you can hear.
- If you use the volume buttons to adjust alert loudness, check the Change with Buttons setting.
There is no need to turn off Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, or another Focus as part of this check. Those modes do not determine whether the built-in Clock alarm sounds.
