An ionic liquid can make the metal–organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8 melt instead of decomposing first. In a 2021 laboratory study, researchers put 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, written [EMIM][TFSI], into ZIF-8’s pores. The resulting IL@ZIF-8 composite showed macroscopic flow at 390 °C in the reported laser-scanning-microscopy experiment and could be quenched into a glass.
The result matters because MOFs provide enormous internal surface area and selective adsorption, but they are usually handled as powders. A melt-processable version could eventually be shaped into membranes, monoliths or other forms. That possibility remains prospective: the cited work demonstrates a material and a processing concept, not commercial deployment.
Why ordinary ZIF-8 is difficult to turn into glass
Metal–organic frameworks are crystalline networks in which metal ions or metal clusters are connected by organic linkers. Their repeating structure leaves a large volume of molecular-scale pores, so a small quantity of solid can adsorb gases, vapors or dissolved molecules. ZIF-8 is a well-known example built from zinc nodes and imidazolate linkers. Its pore system and chemical stability have made it a common subject in adsorption and separation research.

The frozen, disordered solid is a glass. ZIF-8 presents a problem because its metal–linker bonds begin to fail at high temperature, and the framework decomposes before the crystal reaches a conventional melt. Without a liquid stage, researchers cannot use ordinary melt-quenching to make a dense, shaped ZIF-8 glass.

The 2021 study, published in Nature Communications on 29 September 2021, addressed that sequence rather than merely raising the furnace temperature. Its strategy was to alter what happens inside the pores while the framework is heating, so the material can pass through a liquid state before irreversible decomposition dominates.
What IL@ZIF-8 contains
IL@ZIF-8 is the name used for ZIF-8 loaded with an ionic liquid. An ionic liquid is a salt composed entirely of ions that remains liquid at comparatively low temperatures. In this study, the liquid was 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, abbreviated [EMIM][TFSI]. The authors identified ZIF-8 and [EMIM][TFSI] as purchased starting materials in their preparation.
| Component | Function in the composite | What the study establishes |
|---|---|---|
| ZIF-8 | Porous crystalline MOF host; supplies the original metal–linker network and adsorption structure | Parent ZIF-8 decomposed before showing a melt under the reported heating observation |
| [EMIM][TFSI] | Ionic liquid occupying the porous interior | Its interactions with the heated framework were interpreted as stabilizing short-lived bonding arrangements |
| IL@ZIF-8 | Hybrid material containing both the MOF and ionic liquid | Showed flow at 390 °C in the reported experiment and yielded glass after quenching |
The ionic liquid is not simply an external coating. The central design idea is that it resides within the MOF’s pore volume, where its ions can interact with the framework as the crystal is heated. That internal location is why the composite is discussed as an ionic-liquid-facilitated melt rather than as ZIF-8 mixed with an unrelated bulk solvent.
How the ionic liquid enables melting
The failure mode in unfilled ZIF-8
Heating a MOF does not just make its atoms vibrate faster. At sufficiently high temperature, metal–linker bonds dissociate. In unmodified ZIF-8, linkers that detach can trigger rapid structural collapse and chemical decomposition. The framework therefore loses its organized network before enough of the solid has become a flowing liquid.
The proposed stabilizing action
According to the authors’ interpretation, ions from [EMIM][TFSI] interact with transient structures created as ZIF-8 bonds begin to dissociate. Those interactions help stabilize rapidly changing, partially broken framework configurations. By reducing the likelihood that an early bond-breaking event immediately becomes full decomposition, the ionic liquid opens a temperature window in which the material can flow.

This is a kinetic and structural explanation, not a claim that the ionic liquid permanently strengthens every bond in ZIF-8. The framework still changes substantially during heating. The important difference is the pathway: instead of jumping directly from an ordered crystal to decomposed products, IL@ZIF-8 can pass through a liquid-like state that can be frozen into a disordered solid.
Why “below decomposition” is the key criterion
The primary paper’s abstract describes the objective as reducing the melting temperature to below the thermal decomposition temperature. That distinction is more informative than a single furnace setting. A material is useful for melt-quenching only if it has a reproducible interval in which it is liquid while its chemical framework remains sufficiently intact. The ionic liquid changes that ordering of events for this particular ZIF-8 composite.

What the 2021 experiment actually showed
- Prepare the porous composite. The researchers used ZIF-8 and [EMIM][TFSI] as the material inputs, with the ionic liquid incorporated into ZIF-8’s pores.
- Heat while observing the sample. They used laser scanning microscopy to monitor morphology during heating rather than inferring melting only from a furnace temperature.
- Identify macroscopic flow. IL@ZIF-8 displayed visible flow and melting behavior at 390 °C in that observation setup and sample.
- Compare with the parent framework. ZIF-8 alone did not show morphological changes under the same heating observation, consistent with decomposition before a measurable melt.
- Quench the liquid. The molten composite was cooled rapidly to produce a glass-forming material.
The 390 °C value must stay attached to those conditions. It is not a universal melting point for ZIF-8, a standard processing temperature for MOFs, or a safe consumer-use recommendation. Sample size, heating rate, atmosphere, imaging method and composition can all affect what an experiment records. The evidence supports the reported observation for IL@ZIF-8, not an across-the-board rule for other framework and ionic-liquid combinations.
Parent ZIF-8 versus IL@ZIF-8
The most useful comparison is not between two commercial products but between the unmodified host and the ionic-liquid-loaded composite tested by the study.
| Comparison point | Parent ZIF-8 | IL@ZIF-8 |
|---|---|---|
| Starting structure | Crystalline zinc–imidazolate MOF with open pores | The same ZIF-8 host containing [EMIM][TFSI] in its pores |
| Behavior during the reported heating observation | No observed morphological change before decomposition | Macroscopic flow and melting observed at 390 °C in the reported setup |
| Thermal sequence | Framework decomposition occurs before a useful melt | Interactions with the ionic liquid stabilize transient structures long enough to permit a liquid state |
| After rapid cooling | No melt-quench route demonstrated in the comparison | Molten material quenched into a glassy solid |
| Interpretation | Rapid linker destabilization leads to collapse | Ionic-liquid interactions moderate the early bond-dissociation pathway |
This table describes the specific 2021 comparison. It should not be read as proof that every ionic liquid will make every MOF melt, or that the resulting glass preserves all properties of the original crystal.

What “melt-quenching” changes
A quenched glass does not retain the long-range periodic order of crystalline ZIF-8. Its atoms and organic linkers remain connected in a disordered network, while some of the original pore architecture can be altered during melting and cooling. The practical attraction is shapeability: a liquid can fill a mold, coat a surface or form a continuous body before it is frozen.
That processing route could address a familiar weakness of porous powders. Powders are easy to synthesize and provide high surface area, but they can be difficult to seal, support mechanically or integrate into a device without binders. A glassy monolith or film may be easier to handle and may reduce particle release. Those are engineering possibilities, not measurements established for the IL@ZIF-8 sample in the 2021 report.
Glass formation also introduces trade-offs that must be measured for each composition. Heating can change pore size, connectivity, ionic-liquid distribution and the accessibility of adsorption sites. Cooling rate can affect density and residual disorder. A successful melt therefore does not automatically guarantee the same gas uptake, selectivity or chemical stability as crystalline ZIF-8.
Could this be used for gas separation or water treatment?
Contemporary coverage of the 2021 work, including a 26 October 2021 Chemistry World report, identified gas separation and water treatment as possible application areas. The logic is straightforward: MOFs can selectively adsorb molecules, while glass processing could make those materials easier to shape into bulk forms.
Those applications remain prospective for this specific composite. The cited evidence does not establish a deployed IL@ZIF-8 membrane, a certified water-treatment cartridge, long-duration cycling data, or a commercial manufacturing route. Before practical use, researchers would need to establish at least the following:

- Whether the quenched glass retains enough accessible porosity for the target gas or contaminant.
- How selectively it separates mixtures under realistic pressure, humidity and temperature.
- Whether [EMIM][TFSI] stays inside the pores or migrates during operation.

Lothar Wondraczek, a study co-leader at the University of Jena, summarized the appeal this way: “These hybrid materials combine the adsorbing properties of powdered MOFs and the processability of glass.” The statement describes a design promise; it is not evidence that a finished separation or treatment product has reached the market.

Research published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition on 5 June 2025 shows that MOF-glass work continued in a different direction. That study functionalized Zn-ZIF-62 with Schiff-base cobalt units and then melt-quenched the material into a bimetallic glass. It investigated visible-light-driven NADH regeneration, a photochemical function unrelated to the ionic-liquid-assisted ZIF-8 experiment.
The reported maximum NADH productivity for Co/Zn-a_gZIF-62-ipy was 211.5 µmol g−1 h−1. The same study reported 43.4 µmol g−1 h−1 for its unmodified a_gZIF-62-NH2 comparison and described the functionalized glass as nearly five times higher under its test conditions.
These numbers cannot be used as a performance score for IL@ZIF-8. The host framework, chemical modification, processing route, reaction and measured output are all different. The 2025 work is useful as evidence that melt-quenchable MOFs can support multiple research programs, not as a direct comparison of melting temperature, adsorption or durability.

The 2021 demonstration establishes one ionic liquid and one MOF composite. It does not define a universal loading range, heating rate, atmosphere or maximum batch size. Reproducing the result at larger dimensions would require control of heat transfer and volatile or decomposable species throughout the sample.

Structure after melting
The key follow-up question is how much of ZIF-8’s useful pore network survives the liquid-to-glass transition. A glass can be denser and mechanically stronger than a powder while presenting fewer accessible adsorption sites. The answer depends on characterization after quenching, not on the observation of flow alone.
Long-term operation
Potential separation and treatment devices would face repeated adsorption and regeneration cycles. Water, acids, bases, competing gases and mechanical stress could change the glass or redistribute the ionic liquid. The cited reports do not establish lifetime, leaching behavior or regulatory suitability.
Generalization to other MOFs
The mechanism suggests a strategy—use a pore-filling liquid to stabilize transient states—but each framework has its own metal nodes, linkers, pore chemistry and decomposition pathway. Results for ZIF-8 cannot be transferred automatically to another MOF. The separate ZIF-62 study demonstrates that other compositions can be melt-quenched, but it uses a different chemical solution to a different problem.

If the question is whether an ionic liquid can make a MOF melt, the answer is yes for the demonstrated IL@ZIF-8 system. If the question is whether any MOF can now be melted and manufactured like ordinary glass, the answer is no. The work is a laboratory proof that pore chemistry can reorder melting and decomposition for a selected framework.
The most defensible significance is therefore process-oriented. ZIF-8 contributes a porous, adsorbing architecture; [EMIM][TFSI] changes the high-temperature pathway; and rapid cooling locks the flowing composite into a glass. Turning that demonstration into a membrane, water-treatment medium or other device still requires independent measurements of porosity, selectivity, durability, safety and scale-up.
