Internet talk radio is spoken-word audio programming delivered over the Internet. It may be a live stream, a scheduled program, or audio you listen to later; it does not have to be broadcast over traditional radio frequencies or played on a radio receiver.
What makes audio internet talk radio?
The phrase describes two things: the content is primarily speech, and listeners receive it through an internet connection. Interviews, discussions, commentary, and similar programs are natural examples. The term is descriptive rather than a formal technical standard, so its boundaries can depend on how a program is presented.
The delivery method matters more than the device. A computer or other internet-connected device can play the audio; a dedicated radio receiver is not part of the definition. The Internet Society’s history describes the Internet’s evolution to carry real-time audio and video, while early Internet Talk Radio also distributed downloadable audio files (Internet Society, “A Brief History of the Internet”; Internet Multicasting Service archive).

It can be delivered in different formats. A live stream carries audio as an event happens; an archived or downloadable program can be played later. Some programming follows a station-like schedule, while other offerings are individual episodes. These are useful ways to describe formats, not rules that define the medium.

Because both live and recorded formats fit, “internet talk radio” does not mean that a program must be streamed in real time.
How is internet talk radio different from podcasts and conventional radio?
Conventional terrestrial radio reaches listeners through radio-frequency broadcasting. Internet talk radio reaches them through internet delivery. A program can also be a terrestrial broadcast simulcast online, so the categories can overlap.

There is no universal technical boundary established here between internet talk radio and podcasts. A spoken-word episode delivered online may fit the ordinary-language description, but whether someone labels it “radio” or “podcast” can depend on its format and presentation. It is not accurate to say that every podcast is necessarily internet talk radio, or that internet talk radio must be live.
Where did the term’s early example come from?
Carl Malamud’s Internet Talk Radio project began in 1993 through the Internet Multicasting Service. Its “Geek of the Week” series featured interviews with computer experts. The project archive recalls that listeners retrieved audio files using FTP, an early example of spoken-word programs delivered over the Internet without requiring live streaming (Internet Multicasting Service archive, “1993: Internet Talk Radio”).

A May 31, 1993 notice for “NPR Meets the Internet” documented a different early format: a live national radio program connected with the MBONE, an internet multicast network, and computer users could ask host Ira Flatow questions. The notice illustrates an early live internet audio event, alongside the file-based approach used by Internet Talk Radio; it does not mean that all such programs were live (Interesting People archive, “NPR Meets the Internet”).

“Internet talk radio” is useful as a plain-language label for speech-centered audio made available over the Internet. It does not specify a required device, schedule, streaming technology, or universal relationship to podcasting. The term describes a kind of programming and its delivery channel, not a single platform or standardized service.
