Instnt’s April 5, 2023, Hyperledger In-depth webinar presents a vendor-designed way for financial institutions to reuse identity checks: verify a person, issue a portable digital credential, and let another participating service accept it under shared governance and assurance rules. It is a product concept, not evidence that a credential automatically satisfies every bank’s KYC or AML duties.
What the webinar proposed
The event, titled “Enabling Portable KYC for Financial Institutions,” featured Justin Kamerman, Instnt’s chief product officer, and Soubhratra Das, its vice president of engineering. The event description frames repeated know-your-customer checks as a source of friction within AML/CTF programs; it does not quantify that friction.
Instnt described Access as building on its identity-verification, KYC, and fraud-prevention platform. The listing names the W3C Verifiable Credentials framework alongside Hyperledger Indy, Aries Mobile Agent, Aries Framework JavaScript (AFJ), Aries Cloud Agent Python (ACA-Py), and Ursa. This is the event’s product description, not an independent audit of the system’s architecture or interoperability.

In this context, portable KYC means that a person may present an identity credential verified in one relationship to another participating service. The aim is to reduce repeated data entry and verification steps; portability is conditional, not universal. The webinar listing says receiving services must subscribe to the same governance framework and use the same level-of-assurance definitions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Verify identity and risk. Instnt’s November 2022 launch announcement says its service performs identity and risk checks.
- Issue a credential to an accepted user. Instnt says accepted users receive a verifiable credential containing identity information, an assurance level, and expiry and revocation information, associated with a user-specific key pair.
- Store and present it. Instnt describes the credential as stored in an embedded, white-label identity wallet on the user’s device, protected by PIN and biometric verification.
- Let another service decide whether to accept it. A receiving institution still has to recognize the issuer, assurance level, governance rules, and credential for the relevant account and jurisdiction.
Those wallet and implementation details are Instnt’s descriptions, not independently tested findings. Instnt also says a decentralized identity document is published to IBM’s permissioned Hyperledger blockchain. That description alone does not establish that all personal identity data is public—or prove privacy, breach prevention, or any other security outcome.
Does a verifiable credential replace a bank’s KYC checks?
Not on the evidence available here. A reusable credential can carry information about a prior verification, but the sources do not establish that a blockchain record or credential automatically meets every institution’s legal or regulatory obligations. They also do not establish regulator endorsement or legal sufficiency.

Before relying on a credential, a financial institution would need to assess the issuer and evidence behind it, the meaning of its assurance level, and whether its own policies and applicable requirements permit acceptance. The receiving institution—not the credential alone—must determine whether it is adequate for the specific customer, service, and jurisdiction.

What institutions should verify before adopting portable credentials
The webinar describes portability as dependent on shared governance and assurance definitions. A prospective recipient should examine the operational and compliance details behind those terms rather than assume that a credential accepted by one service will be accepted by another.

Instnt’s support documentation says its document-verification feature accepts government-issued IDs such as passports and driver’s licenses through mobile-responsive web, iOS, and Android. It says desktop devices are unsupported for that feature because of camera and orientation requirements. These details apply to the documented feature, not necessarily to every Instnt service. Product names, availability, supported components, and features may have changed since the 2022–2023 announcements; confirm current documentation and obtain institution-specific compliance review before planning a deployment.
