For an independent iOS developer using Apple’s standard App Store route, the lifecycle runs through App Store Connect: prepare a complete app record and build, test beta versions with TestFlight if needed, submit the version to App Review, choose how and when to release an approved app, then submit future updates for review too. Approval is not the same as public availability, and Apple’s review-time average is not a deadline for an individual submission.
What the App Store lifecycle involves
Apple reviews more than first-time app releases. Its App Review process also covers app updates, app bundles, in-app purchases, and in-app events submitted to App Store Connect. The process is intended to support a safe, trusted store and give developers an opportunity to reach users. The practical consequence is that an app is not reviewed once and then exempt from scrutiny: each update must be prepared and submitted as a new version.
App Store Connect is the operational hub for this work. Developers use it to manage an app record, upload and select builds, provide submission information, communicate with App Review, choose release settings, and monitor the app after launch. Xcode is used to prepare and upload an archived build. TestFlight is the optional pre-release path for distributing beta builds and collecting feedback.
This guide covers Apple’s standard App Store route. Apple’s documentation describes potential App Store reach across 175 storefronts and 50 languages, but that is not a promise that a particular app will appear in every storefront or be translated into every language. Distribution rules and agreements can also vary by region.

What to prepare before submitting an iOS app
Read the rules and make the app complete
Review Apple’s App Review Guidelines early enough to make changes before release. A submission should be a working app, not a demonstration shell: test it on current software, remove placeholder content, and check that the principal flows do not crash or lead to dead ends. Apple identifies crashes, placeholder content, broken links, and incomplete information among common causes of problems. More than 40% of unresolved issues Apple reports are associated with Guideline 2.1, App Completeness; this is Apple’s stated figure, not a prediction that any individual app will fail.
Complete the app record and reviewer information
Prepare the listing and required metadata in App Store Connect before sending a version for review. Apple specifically says every app needs a working support link and privacy-policy link. Check both links from the perspective of a user who has no access to your development environment.
If a reviewer needs an account, credentials, special configuration, or instructions to reach an important feature, provide that information with the submission. A reviewer should be able to understand how to exercise the app without guessing at an undisclosed setup step. Before submitting, check that any supplied credentials still work and that the instructions match the build being reviewed.

How to upload a build and submit it for review
Upload and select the build
- Manage the app record in App Store Connect. Create or open the record for the app and prepare the version information that will accompany the build.
- Validate and upload an archive from Xcode. Apple’s Xcode documentation describes validating the archive and uploading it to App Store Connect. Resolve any upload or validation issues before proceeding.
- Select the intended build for the version. In App Store Connect, associate the uploaded build with the app version you plan to submit. Confirm that you selected the build you actually tested, rather than an earlier or incomplete upload.
- Check the submission information. Confirm required metadata, reviewer instructions, and the build selection. Apple’s submission overview describes adding an app version to a draft submission before sending that draft.
- Submit the draft explicitly. Preparing a draft does not itself start review. Submit it through App Store Connect. When review begins, Apple documents the status as “In Review.”

Understand what is included in a submission
A submission can contain an app version and eligible related items. If multiple items are bundled into one submission, Apple says they must all be accepted for that submission to complete. That matters when deciding whether to group related changes: bundling can keep a release together, but it also means one unaccepted item can hold up completion of the combined submission.
Can you test with users before launch?
Yes. TestFlight lets developers distribute beta builds, manage testers, and collect feedback before public release. It is a testing channel, not the public App Store listing. Use it to find usability problems, crashes, and gaps in instructions while there is still time to revise the build.
Internal and external testing

These are Apple’s documented maximum capacities, not recommended target group sizes. Plan around the people whose feedback you can interpret and act on. Apple’s TestFlight overview says each TestFlight build can be tested for up to 90 days. A beta plan therefore needs to account for build expiry rather than assuming one upload remains available indefinitely.

Set up a beta and collect useful feedback
- Provide test information. Add the information testers need to understand what to try and how to provide feedback. Apple documents this setup in Provide test information.
- Upload a beta build. Use Xcode to distribute the build to App Store Connect for TestFlight.
- Choose an internal or external group. Make the choice based on who should test and whether the external review process fits your schedule.
- Invite testers and give them a focused task. Ask them to try the flows that matter to the app rather than relying on an undirected “looks good” response.
- Review the feedback and build data. TestFlight provides tester feedback and lets developers track build status, sessions, and crashes. Fix issues, upload a revised build when appropriate, and repeat testing before the public submission.
How long does App Review take?
Apple says 90% of submissions are reviewed in less than 24 hours, according to its App Review page as accessed in 2026. That is an average reported by Apple, not a service guarantee and not a dependable launch-time promise for a particular app. A submission may take longer, and any requested corrections add work before the app can move toward release.
Allow time for the full cycle: prepare the listing and build, submit, wait for review, respond if Apple raises an issue, and then publish. Avoid making a public launch commitment that assumes the app will be reviewed by a specific hour. Approval and store appearance are separate stages, and Apple says an approved app may take up to 24 hours to appear in the store.
What happens if Apple flags a problem?
Resolve the issue in App Store Connect
Read the message and the guideline Apple cites, then determine whether the issue comes from the app’s behavior, the listing, missing reviewer access, or another part of the submission. Reply through App Store Connect if clarification is useful, make the necessary correction, and resubmit. A clear reply should address the specific point raised and explain what changed; it should not substitute for fixing a problem in the build.
For a bug-fix update, Apple says developers may be able to address additional issues in the next submission when there are no legal or safety concerns. Do not treat that as a general permission to ship a known serious problem: the allowance is qualified, and legal or safety issues are exceptions.

Consider an appeal when appropriate
If you believe Apple misunderstood the app’s concept or the review process was unfair, Apple provides an appeal route through the App Review Board. An appeal is distinct from correcting a clear implementation or completeness problem; use the path that fits the reason the submission was rejected.
How to choose when an approved app goes live
Approval does not automatically settle the public launch time. Complete pricing and availability settings, then choose a release method in App Store Connect. Apple documents manual, automatic, and phased release options.

The options and timing are described in Apple’s publishing overview and its App Store Connect information. Regardless of the selected option, Apple says an approved app may take up to 24 hours to appear in the store.

Updates follow the same essential review cycle as the first release. Prepare the new version and build, upload or select the build in App Store Connect, provide the version information, and submit it for App Review. Once approved, choose the release timing available for that version. Apple’s seven-day phased release option applies to app updates.

Before submitting an update, check that the current app still works and that changes have not introduced new crashes or broken links. Update the reviewer instructions if a new feature requires different access or setup. This is especially important when an update changes a user flow that the reviewer needs to evaluate.
After release, App Store Connect provides app analytics, sales and trends, financial reports, and a way to respond to user reviews. These tools help an indie developer observe the app after launch and decide what to improve in a later version; they do not remove the need to submit that later version for review.
Regional distribution and the limits of this route
This process describes the standard App Store path, not every available distribution arrangement in every country. Apple’s App Review page says developers seeking alternative marketplaces or alternative payment options in the European Union need to review and sign an addendum to the Apple Developer Program License Agreement. Eligibility, costs, and operational requirements are not interchangeable with the standard route and can depend on the applicable regional rules.
Before relying on a regional alternative or planning a launch in a particular market, check Apple’s current agreements and regional documentation. Do not assume that instructions for notarized distribution outside the App Store on macOS describe an equivalent option for iOS; Apple’s cited Xcode passage concerns macOS apps.
