Research funding in India is not one application or one kind of grant. Students and researchers may receive fellowships; eligible universities and research organisations may administer investigator-led project grants; and innovators or startups may seek prototype support or financing for private-sector R&D. The right route depends on who is applying, the host or funding channel, the project’s stage and discipline, and the rules and deadlines in the current scheme notice.
Start by identifying who will receive the funding
The first useful question is not simply “Which grant is largest?” It is “Who is the applicant, and what will the money pay for?” A fellowship supports an individual’s research training or work. A project grant is awarded through an eligible investigator and host organisation to cover approved research costs. Prototype support is meant to help move an idea toward a working product or proof of concept, often through a participating centre. Startup-oriented R&D finance can use a different structure again, such as a long-term loan or, in select cases, equity.
These routes are not interchangeable. A student cannot assume that a university project grant will pay their personal stipend; a company cannot assume that a student fellowship is startup capital; and a research organisation’s eligibility for one scheme does not establish its eligibility for every scheme. The programme and its live call determine the eligible applicant, host, costs, term and application process.

These are examples of different mechanisms, not a ranking or a guarantee that a particular applicant will qualify. For individual opportunities, the Government of India’s ISTI funding-opportunities portal is another place to look; confirm scheme conditions with the administering agency.

If you are a student or early-career researcher
Check whether a fellowship fits your academic route
DST’s INSPIRE programme includes an INSPIRE Fellowship for doctoral study in basic and applied sciences, including engineering and medicine. Its FAQ describes eligibility routes that include certain university-level rank holders, and says the fellowship is generally implemented at a recognised Indian institute, university or laboratory. That is not an assurance that every student in those subjects—or every high-performing student—qualifies. Review the current eligibility route, academic evidence required and host conditions against your own situation before preparing an application.
INSPIRE has multiple programme components, so make sure you are looking at the doctoral fellowship rather than assuming that information about another component applies. Start with the INSPIRE programme page, read the FAQ, and check DST’s INSPIRE scheme page for the scheme description. The cited pages do not establish a universal stipend amount here; use the applicable current notice for financial terms.

Look beyond a conventional doctoral fellowship when the work is translational
If your research is aimed at a bio-based product or venture, BIRAC’s E-YUVA is an example of support that combines fellowships and research grants with mentoring and bio-incubation exposure. It is not simply another name for a doctoral stipend: check the programme’s intended participant, selection channel and activity requirements. The E-YUVA page displayed a deadline of 31 October 2026; deadlines can change, so confirm the current call and submission instructions directly on the BIRAC E-YUVA page before relying on that date.

The published page describes support of up to ₹10 lakh through participating PRAYAS Centres. A separate PRAYAS 2.0 page gives a ceiling of up to ₹20 lakh. These are programme-specific maximums, not automatic awards, and the two pages describe separate programmes. Identify a participating centre and check its active call, project fit and application route rather than treating either ceiling as cash available to every student or innovator.

If you are applying through a university or research organisation
ANRF’s research-grant information describes support for investigators at recognised academic institutions, national laboratories and other eligible R&D organisations. The award is tied to both the investigator and the host: the project idea alone does not establish eligibility. Before choosing a scheme, check whether the organisation is an eligible host, whether your appointment status meets the call’s requirements, whether co-investigators are required or permitted, and whether restrictions apply to simultaneous awards.
Research-grant budgets may cover costs such as equipment, manpower, consumables, travel, contingency and institutional overheads. The applicable scheme sets the allowable categories and conditions; a cost appearing in general scheme information should not be assumed eligible at the same amount or on the same terms in every call. Read the relevant ANRF research-grant scheme information alongside the actual call notice, which governs the application and award.

Understand the Start-up Research Grant as one specific case
ANRF’s Start-up Research Grant illustrates how specific a grant’s terms can be. The FAQ describes a one-time grant of up to ₹30 lakh, excluding overheads, for two years. It gives an upper age limit of 42 and specifies relaxations. The listed possible costs include equipment, manpower, consumables, travel and contingency. These terms describe that grant, not all ANRF funding; the FAQ does not turn the ceiling into an entitlement or replace the scheme’s eligibility and call requirements. Check the ANRF FAQ and current scheme notice for the conditions that apply to your application.

Startup-focused support differs according to project maturity and the form of financing. A prototype programme is designed around building or demonstrating an early product; a research-intensive private-sector financing mechanism may be aimed at projects with higher technology readiness. These are different needs, and a startup’s incorporation alone does not make it eligible for either route.

The RDI Fund is described as supporting private-sector enterprises, startups and industry in research-intensive and strategic areas. It is an ANRF special-purpose fund that channels support through second-level fund managers. The overview identifies potential managers such as alternative investment funds, development finance institutions, NBFCs, focused research organisations, BIRAC and IIT research parks. Its funding mechanism describes unsecured long-term loans and says equity may be used in select cases, particularly for startups. In other words, this is not a direct student stipend or a conventional university project grant.
Before pursuing the RDI Fund, test the fit on sector, technology readiness, proposed use of funds and financing structure. A loan creates a repayment obligation; possible equity has different implications for ownership. The cited pages describe the mechanism but do not establish one uniform amount, term or application procedure for all applicants. Consult the RDI Fund overview, its funding-mechanism page and the relevant fund manager’s current process.
How to choose and prepare a funding route
- Define the recipient. Decide whether support is needed by an individual student or researcher, a host institution’s investigator, an innovator developing a prototype, or a private-sector enterprise. A mismatch here is a reason to change routes before drafting an application.
- Match the research stage. Separate doctoral training, independent academic research, proof of concept, prototype development and higher-readiness R&D. INSPIRE is a doctoral fellowship example; ANRF research grants support eligible investigator-led projects; NIDHI-PRAYAS pages describe prototype support; and the RDI Fund focuses on private-sector projects at higher technology readiness.
- Verify eligibility at both applicant and host level. Check discipline, degree or academic route, age or career stage, appointment status, host recognition, incubator or centre channel, and any company conditions that the live scheme notice specifies. Do not infer eligibility from a programme’s general description.
- Read the cost and financing rules. Establish whether the mechanism pays an individual fellowship, reimburses or funds defined project costs, supports prototype work, provides a loan, or may take equity. Check the treatment of overheads, duration and reporting requirements where stated. Do not put an expense into a budget solely because another scheme allows it.
- Confirm the call and submission channel. Check whether the call is open, its deadline, required forms and documents, and whether applications go to an agency portal, host institution, incubator or fund manager. A scheme page can describe a programme without proving that applications are currently being accepted.
- Compare routes on fit, not just maximum amount. A larger ceiling can be a poor choice if its recipient, project stage, host or financing terms do not match. Compare the full award structure and live call requirements before investing time in an application.
What applicants should not assume
- There is no single universal Indian research-funding application covering fellowships, university grants, prototype support and startup finance.
- INSPIRE is not open to every student; eligibility follows specified academic routes and current rules.
- Eligibility for one ANRF grant does not prove that the same investigator or host qualifies for another ANRF scheme.
- The ₹30 lakh ANRF Start-up Research Grant ceiling and two-year term apply to that scheme; they are not standard terms for ANRF grants generally.
- The NIDHI-PRAYAS and PRAYAS 2.0 ceilings belong to separate programme pages. They should not be added together or represented as a single award.
- A startup may encounter loan or equity financing rather than a non-repayable grant, depending on the route. Establish the terms before treating financing as grant income.
- A published page or old deadline is not proof a call is open today. Use the current official notice and application channel.
Practical decision rule
Choose the route that matches the legal and practical recipient, research stage, host or channel, and funding form—not just the subject area or largest stated ceiling. A doctoral student should first check fellowship eligibility and host conditions; an investigator should verify both host and call rules; an innovator should distinguish mentoring or prototype support from a startup financing instrument; and a company pursuing later-stage R&D should examine the RDI Fund’s financing and fund-manager pathway. Where two routes appear relevant, compare their current notices side by side before applying.
