Immich and PhotoPrism include face-recognition workflows in their photo libraries; in Nextcloud, the documented route is the separate Recognize app, with results surfaced in Memories. All three can help you find photos by people, but their search tools, setup, and correction options differ. Official documentation does not provide a like-for-like accuracy or speed benchmark, so it cannot establish a reliable overall winner.
What face recognition does—and what it does not guarantee
Face recognition is a sequence of steps, not a single act of labeling. A system first detects a face in an image, then represents it numerically so it can compare it with other detected faces, and finally groups sufficiently similar faces into clusters. A person can then be named or otherwise managed in the app. Search uses those results to retrieve images associated with a person or with a face-related filter.
Each step can fail independently. A face may be missed during detection; an embedding may not match a later photo of the same person; or clustering can put different people together or split one person across several groups. Naming and correcting clusters are therefore part of a useful people workflow, not evidence that recognition is infallible. Immich and PhotoPrism document these stages and their limitations in their facial-recognition guide and face-recognition guide.

How the three options differ
| Option | Where people recognition appears | Search beyond people | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immich | Integrated face processing and people management: name, merge, hide, favorite, and search for people. | Contextual CLIP search plus filters for people and other media attributes. | Background processing and clustering settings affect results. Remote machine-learning processing is optional; clustering remains server-side. |
| PhotoPrism | Its People view presents recognized and new face clusters; the search interface supports person, face, and face-count queries. | Named-person and subject searches, combined filters, and metadata-based organization. | Recognition starts after scanning completes. Face detection has documented blind spots, and existing libraries retain their embedding model unless deliberately migrated. |
| Nextcloud Photos ecosystem | The Recognize app adds face recognition for Memories; results appear in Memories’ People section. | Recognize also supplies tagging for objects, places, audio genres, and video actions. This is not the same as a documented general-purpose Photos query syntax. | Recognition is an app integration, not a capability to assume is enabled in every Nextcloud Photos installation. Backend and installed-app availability matter. |
The comparison reflects official product documentation, not a hands-on test. Hardware, library contents, settings, model choices, and processing state vary, and the reviewed sources provide no common accuracy or speed benchmark.
How Immich recognizes people and searches photos
From detected faces to manageable people
Immich detects faces on generated preview images through its machine-learning service. It records bounding boxes and detection scores, passes detected face crops to a recognition model, and indexes the resulting embeddings for matching and clustering. In the people interface, you can name people, view their assets, merge detected people, hide faces, favorite someone, and set a date of birth. These functions are documented in the Immich facial-recognition guide.
Its clustering approach is derived from DBSCAN but adapted for a library that keeps receiving new media. Immich says it waits for face detection and thumbnail generation before clustering where possible, because grouping a larger batch can improve results. Incremental processing can still produce suboptimal clusters in some upload and processing sequences, and a later full rerun may produce different groupings from incremental rounds.

Two controls affect grouping: a minimum-recognized-faces setting and a recognition-distance threshold. If the settings are too permissive, unrelated people may be linked; if too restrictive, matching faces can remain split into duplicates or unassigned clusters. Review and correct the people groups rather than assuming one threshold will suit every library.
Person search versus contextual search
Immich has two distinct ways to search. A recognized-person filter finds assets associated with people the system has grouped. Contextual search uses CLIP embeddings to match natural-language queries to image content. The latter does not create inspectable tags, labels, or descriptions; it is a separate search mechanism, not a visible catalog of generated captions. The search guide also documents filters for location, filename or path, text found by OCR, tags, camera, date, media type, and albums.
Where processing happens
Immich can delegate preview processing for Smart Search and face detection to a remote machine-learning container. That means the previews are sent to the machine running that service, so its location and operator matter to a privacy decision. The remote-machine-learning documentation distinguishes this from face clustering itself, which is handled between the Immich server and database. Check the deployment described in the remote machine-learning guide before choosing where to run the service.

How PhotoPrism recognizes people and searches faces
Scanning, detection, embeddings, and clusters
PhotoPrism documents a three-stage process: detection locates faces, embedding represents each face as a vector, and clustering groups similar embeddings so a group can be assigned to a person. Its People guide says recognition does not start until the library scan is complete. Searching or updating faces can temporarily place substantial load on the CPU, and older hardware may take longer to process a library. See the People guide and face-recognition guide.

Search syntax for people and face counts
PhotoPrism documents explicit query terms that can be combined. These let you narrow results by whether faces are present, how many are detected, or which named person appears:
| Query | What it finds |
|---|---|
people, faces, or faces:true |
Images with people or detected faces. |
faces:false |
Images without detected people. |
faces:3 |
Images with at least three faces. |
person:"John Doe" or subject:"John Doe" |
Images matching the exact person name. |
people:"John" or subjects:"John" |
Images matching a partial name. |
face:new |
Images with unknown people. |
These are useful for distinct jobs: finding images with any faces, locating a named person, and surfacing clusters that have not yet been identified. PhotoPrism’s filters can be combined, so a person or face condition can narrow a broader search.

What can cause missed or split faces
PhotoPrism lists several reasons detection may be incomplete: scanning may not be finished, faces may be too small, thumbnail size or quality may be insufficient, contrast may be poor, false-positive filtering may discard a detection, or stacking behavior may affect what is processed. The guide also calls out specific difficult cases: recognition is less reliable for young children and for one person photographed many years apart, and non-upright faces are often missed. These are limitations to account for when interpreting a sparse People view, not proof that a person is absent from the library.
Models and existing libraries
PhotoPrism’s user guide says new libraries use SFace, while libraries created before SFace became available retain FaceNet. Changing a configuration value alone does not switch an existing library’s model. Migration re-embeds faces and is a deliberate operation; the guide recommends backing up first. The developer guide, last updated October 6, 2026, describes the current three-stage pipeline and clustering implementation, but model names alone do not provide a basis for ranking recognition quality across projects. Consult the developer guide alongside the user guide before changing an established library.

Its documentation says it can import names assigned to faces in applications such as Adobe Bridge, Lightroom, digiKam, ACDSee, or Windows when the names are present as supported XMP metadata. That can help when bringing an already-organized library into PhotoPrism; whether a particular file contains supported face-name metadata still matters. See PhotoPrism metadata support.

How face recognition works with Nextcloud Photos
Recognize adds the people feature to Memories
For Nextcloud, distinguish the Photos experience from the app that supplies recognition. The official administration manual describes Recognize as adding media tagging and face recognition functionality for Memories. Face-recognition results appear in Memories’ People section. It is therefore misleading to assume that every Nextcloud Photos installation has face recognition enabled by default; the relevant Recognize app and Memories integration must be part of the deployment.
The manual describes two processing routes: built-in Node.js/TensorFlow.js classifiers running on Nextcloud nodes, or a containerized recognize_backend ExApp using AppAPI and Nextcloud TaskProcessing. It also describes object and landmark tagging plus audio and video classification. Recognize’s documentation says its models are open source and run entirely on-premises. The exact capability depends on the installed apps, backend, and server version; check the Recognize administration manual for the version you operate.
Do not assume Photos has a particular search language
The documented Nextcloud route supports finding recognized people through Memories’ People section, while Recognize adds several kinds of media tags. The cited manual does not establish a general-purpose face-query syntax for Nextcloud Photos comparable to PhotoPrism’s documented operators. Choose it based on the Memories integration and the tagging functions your deployment needs, rather than expecting undocumented search commands.
How to choose for your library
Start with the workflow you actually want, not a claim that one system has the best recognition. The documentation describes different product surfaces and features but offers no controlled cross-project test. A meaningful comparison for your setup comes down to these practical questions:
- Where should people management live? Immich has an integrated people workflow; PhotoPrism has its own People view and face-oriented search; Nextcloud’s documented people view is in Memories with Recognize.
- How do you expect to search? Immich combines recognized-person filters with contextual CLIP queries and broad metadata filters. PhotoPrism exposes explicit person, face, and face-count syntax and can use supported XMP metadata. Nextcloud’s documented route is the Recognize/Memories feature set rather than an equivalent query language.
- What compute can your host spare? PhotoPrism notes CPU load during indexing and face updates; Immich depends on background machine-learning and clustering work. The Nextcloud manual offers built-in and containerized backend routes. None of the reviewed documentation supplies a shared hardware baseline or comparable processing-time figures.
- How much manual correction is acceptable? Plan to review misgrouped, duplicated, or unknown people. Immich documents merge and hide actions, while PhotoPrism exposes new-face searches and named-person organization. The documentation does not give a comparable correction-effort measure.
- Where are previews and models processed? For Immich, determine whether a remote ML container receives previews and who controls that host. For Nextcloud, the manual describes on-premises open-source model processing. For any self-hosted deployment, confirm the actual server and app configuration rather than relying on the product name alone.
Practical checks when results look wrong
If a person is missing
- In PhotoPrism, confirm the library scan has finished before judging recognition results; the documented recognition stage waits for the scan to complete.
- Check for image conditions known to reduce detection, including small faces, low-quality thumbnails, poor contrast, non-upright faces, and photos of young children.
- In Nextcloud, confirm Recognize and Memories are installed and that the configured classifier route is available; recognition is not an assumed base Photos feature.
If one person appears in several groups—or different people are combined
- In Immich, review the minimum-face and distance-threshold settings. A permissive distance can merge unrelated people; a restrictive threshold can split matches. Consider whether incremental processing order contributed before relying on a cluster as final.
- In PhotoPrism, treat age-span photos as a harder matching case and review new or unexpected clusters rather than inferring that every group is correct.
- Before changing PhotoPrism’s model for an existing library, back up and follow the documented migration process; changing a setting alone does not re-embed existing faces.
Official feature behavior can change as projects release updates. The documentation referenced here was accessed October 9, 2026; PhotoPrism’s developer face-recognition guide states it was last updated October 6, 2026. Check the documentation for the exact release and deployment you plan to use.
