Do not buy, message, or send money to a listing that appears to offer a tiger, tiger part, or tiger derivative. Tiger trafficking can involve live cubs, skins, claws, teeth, bones, and other derivatives. Online adverts may be used to display products, connect buyers and sellers, arrange payment, or move a conversation into private messaging. A suspicious price, recycled photograph, or hard-to-recover payment method can indicate a purchase scam, but none of those clues by itself proves that a seller is trafficking wildlife.
The safest response is to stop contact, preserve the listing information if doing so is safe, report the account to the platform, and send the evidence to the wildlife-enforcement authority for the relevant country. International commercial trade in tigers and their parts or derivatives is generally prohibited under CITES, while domestic laws, permits, exceptions, and enforcement procedures vary by jurisdiction.
What tiger trafficking includes
Tiger trafficking is the illegal movement, sale, purchase, possession, or brokering of live tigers or material derived from them. It is not limited to a shipment of a whole animal. A listing may concern an animal, a recognizable part, a processed item, or a substance whose claimed origin is difficult for a consumer to verify.
Live tigers and cubs
WWF identifies live cubs among the forms encountered in tiger trade. A live-animal transaction can be advertised as a pet sale, a breeding opportunity, a rescue placement, a display animal, or a transfer between facilities. Those labels do not establish that the transaction is lawful. A seller may also use a photograph of a legitimate facility or a different animal to make an offer look credible.

Parts and derivatives
WWF lists fur, claws, teeth, and bones among tiger products found in trade. Teeth and claws may be marketed as amulets or ornaments; bones may be described as ingredients for traditional medicines; and fur may be presented as a decorative item. Processing, carving, mounting, or mixing a material into another product does not automatically remove wildlife-trade rules. A consumer generally cannot determine species, origin, or legal status from appearance alone.
Why the source can be difficult to establish
Captive facilities are an important context, but “captive-bred” is not a consumer authentication method. WWF says captive tiger facilities can perpetuate demand, provide cover for illegal trade, and make it harder for law enforcement to distinguish captive-origin from wild-origin parts. That is a conservation organization’s description of a risk, not proof that every facility or every captive-bred claim is illicit. It also means that a seller’s statement about origin should not be treated as conclusive evidence.
How online channels can facilitate the trade
CITES defines internet-enabled wildlife crime as crime involving a wildlife specimen that is enabled or facilitated by information and communication technology networks or an application in the digital world. Its definition expressly covers the public web, the dark web, online marketplaces, social-network platforms, instant-chat applications, peer-to-peer networks, and email services.
Those channels can perform different functions. An open listing can advertise an item and attract inquiries. A social account can build an audience or redirect a buyer to another service. A messaging application can be used to negotiate, send additional photographs, or arrange delivery. Email and peer-to-peer services can carry invoices, shipping details, or payment instructions. The same person may use several services, moving a conversation after a platform removes a post or asks for documentation.
CITES also makes an important qualification: online commerce can be legal or illegal. The existence of a marketplace, a business account, a payment receipt, or a platform verification badge does not establish legality. National measures must adapt as sellers change platforms, account names, payment methods, and shipping routes.

What a digital listing can and cannot tell you
| What you may observe | What it may indicate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| A public advert for a tiger, part, or derivative | Someone is attempting to attract buyers or inquiries | That the item exists, is genuine, or is being offered lawfully |
| A request to continue in private chat | The seller wants a less visible channel for discussion | That a crime has occurred |
| Photos, a permit image, or a captive-origin claim | The seller is presenting an explanation of origin or authorization | That the document is valid, belongs to the item, or covers the proposed transaction |
| A marketplace account or payment record | The platform processed an account or transaction step | That the wildlife trade complies with national law |
Do not attempt to verify a listing by placing a test order. A purchase can create legal, safety, and conservation risks, and it can send money to a fraudulent or abusive seller.
What CITES says about tiger trade
CITES has included tigers in Appendix I since 1975. The CITES Secretariat states: "all international trade in tigers, including parts and derivatives, for commercial purposes is generally prohibited under the Convention." This is the rule for international commercial trade under the treaty; it is not a universal answer to every domestic possession or transaction question.
Recommended Free Tools
International rule versus domestic requirements
CITES obligations are implemented through national law. A country may have additional prohibitions, licensing systems, registration requirements, seizure powers, or rules for legacy specimens. The treatment of a particular item can depend on the country of export, import, transit, the purpose of the movement, the species and material involved, and whether an exception applies. A permit document does not give a consumer permission to import, export, possess, or sell an item where domestic law forbids it.
Because the CITES treaty summary cited here was published in 2018, check the current rules and the competent authority for the specific jurisdiction before relying on any permit or exception. Do not infer that a transaction is lawful merely because it is described as private, antique, educational, medicinal, or captive-bred.
Australia-specific permit warning
Australian government guidance, updated July 15, 2026, warns that online products can contain regulated or endangered species and that international shipments may require permits. That guidance applies to Australia; it is not a global permit rule. An Australian resident should check the current Australian requirements before importing or receiving any wildlife product and should not assume that a seller’s paperwork satisfies them.

What seizure data can show—and what it cannot
Seizures are records of detected cases, not a census of all trafficking. They are influenced by enforcement priorities, reporting, border controls, investigative capacity, and the form in which products are found. A rise or fall in seizures therefore cannot be converted directly into the total amount trafficked.
TRAFFIC’s analysis published November 25, 2025, covers incidents recorded from 2000 through June 2025. It identified 2,551 seizure incidents involving the equivalent of at least 3,808 tigers. In that dataset, tiger parts represented 90% of seized commodities in the 2000s and 60% from 2020 onward. Those percentages describe the share of commodities in the report’s seizure records, not the share of all trafficking.
The same analysis found a shift toward more whole-tiger seizures in recent years. More than two-thirds of whole tigers seized from 2020 through June 2025 were in countries without viable wild tiger populations. TRAFFIC says this pattern suggests cross-border trafficking or captive-bred sourcing; it does not establish the origin of every seized animal. Treat the trend as evidence about recorded seizures, not as a field test for a particular advert.
How to spot a wildlife-product purchase scam
General exotic-animal scam guidance can help you recognize fraud risk. It cannot authenticate a tiger product or determine whether a seller is committing a wildlife offense.
Hard-to-recover payment demands
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s 2024 guidance on exotic-pet purchase scams describes requests for gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. These methods can be difficult to reverse after money is sent. A seller who insists on one of them is presenting a payment-fraud warning, especially when the seller refuses a safer, traceable arrangement or creates urgency. The clue still does not tell you whether the seller has a real animal, a wildlife product, or nothing at all.

Recycled or copied photographs
The FTC advises checking whether animal photographs appear elsewhere. A photograph reused across unrelated listings may indicate that the advert is fabricated or that the person posting it does not control the animal. It is not proof of a tiger-trafficking offense: legitimate photographs can be copied without authorization, and an illegal seller could use original images.
An unusually low price
The FTC also recommends comparing prices. A price far below what the advert claims to offer can be a bait tactic designed to obtain a deposit or personal information. Price comparisons are only a fraud screen. They cannot establish a specimen’s species, origin, permit status, or legality, and there is no safe “bargain” threshold at which a tiger product becomes an appropriate purchase.
Why scam clues and trafficking clues are different
| Situation | Most defensible inference | Unsafe inference |
|---|---|---|
| The seller demands cryptocurrency or gift cards | There is elevated risk of payment fraud; do not pay | The seller is necessarily trafficking a tiger |
| The same cub photo appears in several adverts | The listing may be fabricated or misleading | The pictured animal is definitely being moved illegally |
| The price is unusually low | The offer may be a bait-and-payment scam | The item is counterfeit or the seller is a wildlife criminal |
| A seller shows a permit or says “captive-bred” | The seller is making a claim that requires official verification | The transaction is legal and the product is authentic |
A fake seller may take money without delivering an animal. An illegal wildlife seller may actually possess or deliver an animal or product. A listing can be both fraudulent and wildlife-related, but the available scam guidance does not establish how often those categories overlap.
What photographs, paperwork, and platform badges cannot establish
Consumers do not have a reliable authentication protocol in the information available here. A photograph can be old, copied, digitally altered, or of another specimen. A document can be expired, altered, issued for a different item, or irrelevant to the proposed route and purpose. A marketplace badge confirms only that the account met that platform’s stated criteria at some point. A label such as “legal,” “antique,” or “captive-bred” is a seller’s assertion, not an independent finding.

What to do when a listing looks suspicious
- Stop the transaction. Do not buy, place a test order, send a deposit, click a payment link, or arrange collection. Do not handle or transport a suspected tiger product.
- Do not confront the seller. An argument can escalate personal risk, prompt deletion of evidence, or interfere with an investigation. Do not claim to be law enforcement or attempt to infiltrate a group.
- Preserve the listing safely. Record the full website URL, the account or seller name, the date and time you observed it, the wording of the offer, and screenshots that show the page and surrounding context. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service guidance specifically asks for a full website URL and screenshots when reporting suspected online wildlife trafficking. Preserve original files without editing them if possible.
- Report the account to the platform. Use the platform’s wildlife, prohibited-goods, fraud, or suspicious-content reporting path. Include the URL and explain that the offer appears to involve a tiger, tiger part, derivative, or live animal. The platform may be able to remove the listing, preserve account data, or connect reports across accounts.
- Contact the relevant wildlife authority. Send the same evidence to the national or local wildlife-enforcement agency in the jurisdiction connected to the advert, seller, shipment, or intended buyer. Explain what you observed rather than asserting facts you cannot establish.
- Report payment fraud separately when appropriate. If you sent money or personal information, contact your bank or payment provider immediately and use the applicable consumer-protection or fraud-reporting channel. The FTC guidance is U.S.-specific; other countries use different agencies and recovery procedures.
Choosing a reporting route
| Channel | Best use | Information to provide | What it can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| The platform where the advert appeared | Active listings, accounts, messages, or payment requests on that service | Full URL, screenshots, account name, date, and the reason for concern | Apply platform rules, remove content, restrict an account, and potentially preserve records |
| National or local wildlife authority | Possible possession, sale, transport, import, export, or cross-border offense | Listing details, location clues, shipment information, and unedited evidence | Assess jurisdiction, investigate, coordinate with customs or police, and enforce wildlife law |
| Coalition public reporting form | Suspicious online wildlife-product listings where the service accepts the report | URL, screenshots, seller details, and a concise description | Route intelligence to relevant partners or authorities, subject to its intake rules |
The Coalition’s reporting page currently says it accepts reports except those from Europe. That geographic condition can change, so verify the form’s current availability before relying on it. If it does not accept your report, use the platform and the applicable wildlife authority instead.
How to describe the concern without overstating it
A useful report separates what you saw from what you suspect. For example: “On October 13, 2026, this account advertised an item described as tiger bone and requested cryptocurrency. The URL and screenshots are attached.” That is more actionable than “This person is definitely trafficking tigers.” Include the seller’s exact wording, but do not embellish it.
- State whether the listing offered a live animal, a part, or a derivative.
- Identify the platform, account name, URL, and date observed.
- Explain any payment request, shipping claim, or location information visible in the advert.
- Say whether you paid, shared personal information, or received a package.
- Mark anything uncertain as an inference rather than a fact.
Authorities may ask follow-up questions. Keep the original screenshots and files, and do not announce publicly that a report has been made.
Questions a suspicious listing cannot answer for you
Can a “captive-bred” label make a purchase safe?
No. The label is a claim about origin. It does not independently prove the species, the facility, the chain of custody, or compliance with the laws of every country involved.
Does a CITES reference mean domestic sale is legal?
No. CITES governs international trade through national implementation. Domestic possession, sale, transport, and permits are governed by the applicable country or territory, which may impose stricter rules.
Should you buy a small item to obtain evidence?
No. A test purchase can expose you to fraud, dangerous contact, legal liability, and participation in the trade. Preserve the advert instead and report it.
What if the listing has already disappeared?
Report the account or URL anyway if you preserved it. Include the date, screenshots, and any payment or contact information. A removed page can still be relevant to a platform review or an authority’s investigation.
Bottom line
Tiger trafficking can involve live animals, parts, and derivatives and can be facilitated by almost any digital communication channel. Scam indicators such as recycled photos, unusually low prices, and hard-to-recover payment demands tell you to stop and protect your money; they do not authenticate a product or prove a wildlife crime. Do not buy or investigate by contact. Save the full URL and screenshots when safe, report the listing to the platform, and notify the wildlife authority that has jurisdiction.
