Gaming can get harder when familiar controls, vision, hearing, or strength change—but that does not mean you have to quit, switch to one “senior” genre, or adopt someone else’s setup. The useful response is to notice which part of play has become frustrating and choose games and settings that still fit your interests.

What changed for the author—and what the account does not establish

A short excerpt from the CNET article describes its author dealing with a twitchy forefinger and shaky hands, accidental double-clicks, difficulty placing the cursor, repeated key presses, declining vision, tinnitus, muscle weakness, and anxiety. Those details belong to one person’s account; they are not evidence that every older player experiences the same changes, or that age alone caused each one. The full article was not accessible, so the particular adjustments the author made cannot be verified.

The practical starting point is therefore your own experience: identify whether the obstacle is input accuracy, readability, sound, physical comfort, pace, or something else. You do not need to treat a personal account as a diagnosis or a prescribed solution.

Older players do not all want the same kind of game

Age is a poor shortcut for predicting what someone enjoys. Northeastern University News reported figures from an AARP 2023 report: 45% of gamers aged 50 and older played every day, 78% cited staying mentally sharp as a major reason to play, and 69% said they did not feel games were designed with them in mind. These are figures as reported secondhand by Northeastern in 2026, not a direct examination of the AARP report here.

The same Northeastern coverage describes people playing for enjoyment, social connection, relaxation, and mental sharpness—and a 60-year-old game developer who still plays fast-paced first-person shooters, while acknowledging that her reflexes are not what they used to be. Associate professor Leanne Chukoskie put it this way: “We should have never bought into the [idea that] you’re an adult and now you’re serious and you shouldn’t play anymore,” (Northeastern University News, June 2, 2026).

That variety matters when choosing what to change. If you love a demanding action game, the answer need not be to abandon the genre. You might instead adjust the difficulty, remap controls, use a different input method, or try a different title within the same genre.

Choose what to adjust by the frustration you notice

Think of these as options to try, not as treatments or rules tied to age. A different setup may feel better for one person and worse for another.

When inputs feel imprecise or tiring

Consider whether the game is easier to control with a touchscreen, keyboard and mouse, or a controller. A Windows Central writer described the tactile ergonomics of a controller as preferable to touchscreen controls; that is an individual preference, not a universal or medical recommendation. Remappable controls may also let you move a frequently used action to a more comfortable button or key.

FLYDIGI VADER 5S Wired Controller for XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, Windows
  • No Stick Drift, More Accurate Every Match: Updated Hall Effect sticks deliver ultra-precise control with zero stick drift, zero deadzone, and exceptional recentering, helping you land accurate headshots, smoother movement, and more reliable inputs even after years of intense gaming sessions.
  • Adjust Joystick Feel for Every Game in Seconds: Unlike ordinary XBOX controllers, Vader 5S lets you physically adjust joystick tension from 40gf to 100gf on the fly. Use lighter tension for fast FPS aiming and flick shots, or tighten the sticks for smoother steering and precision control in racing and sports games — all without opening software or replacing parts.
  • Switch Trigger Response for FPS or Racing Games Instantly: Use micro-click triggers for rapid firing and faster reactions in shooting games, or switch to Hall Effect linear triggers for smoother throttle and braking control in racing games. One controller optimized for multiple genres without needing separate setups.
  • Feel Recoil, Acceleration, and Impact More Realistically: 4-motor vibration across both triggers and grips makes shooting, driving, crashing, and combat feel more immersive. Experience stronger recoil feedback in shooters and more realistic acceleration and road feel in racing games.
  • Quick In-Game Adjustments Without Interrupting Gameplay: Fine-tune vibration, switch profiles, remap buttons, or adjust volume directly on the controller while gaming. No need to pause the match or open software — perfect for players who constantly switch between FPS, RPG, racing, and multiplayer games.

When timing or precision makes a game frustrating

Look for adjustable difficulty and settings for timing-sensitive actions. In Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft’s accessibility design includes fine-grained difficulty customization, including parry timing. That can change how demanding a particular mechanic feels without requiring a player to give up the game. Settings and features can differ by edition or later updates.

When remembering locations or navigation is the problem

Navigation aids can reduce the need to remember where an objective or item was found. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown includes Memory Shards, which let players pin screenshots to the map. This is one example, not a feature to assume every game offers; check the game’s accessibility and settings menus for comparable aids.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

When vision, hearing, or physical comfort affects play

Check the game’s available display, subtitle, audio, and control options, and consider whether a shorter session or a less demanding control scheme suits you better. The CNET excerpt mentions vision changes and tinnitus among one author’s difficulties, but the available account does not establish which settings or equipment helped them. Do not assume a particular device or adjustment will address an individual sensory or health concern.

A practical way to find a better fit

  1. Name the sticking point. After a frustrating session, note whether the difficulty was cursor placement, repeated inputs, a timing window, reading the screen, locating objectives, or finding time to play.
  2. Check the game before replacing it. Look in its accessibility, controls, difficulty, and display settings for remapping, adjustable timing, readable presentation, or navigation aids.
  3. Try a different input method if available. Compare touchscreen, keyboard and mouse, and controller based on comfort and accuracy for that game. A controller is simply one option, not a requirement.
  4. Match the pace to what you want. Keep playing a fast-paced game if that is what you enjoy; if a particular session feels frustrating, try a mode, setting, or different game that better fits your time and energy.
  5. Keep what works for you. Revisit the settings as preferences or circumstances change. The goal is a satisfying way to play, not conformity to an idea of what older players should enjoy.

What research on older adults and games can—and cannot—say

A study by Sabrina Oppl and Christian Stary examined facilitated tablet-game sessions for older adults with little or no previous experience using interactive digital media. At follow-up interviews three months after the sessions, 16 of 20 participants said their handling of digital devices had improved. This was a self-report from a small volunteer sample, not an objective clinical measure. The authors noted that the study did not compare game-based learning with other learning approaches and that volunteers may have been more willing than average to adopt technology; they cautioned that generalizability was limited.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

That study offers narrow context about learning to handle digital devices. It does not show that games prevent decline, improve health generally, or solve the specific control difficulties described in the CNET excerpt.

In Microsoft Game Dev’s March 5, 2025 account of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, senior game designer Rémi Boutin said, “Everyone should have the right to experience that, there should be no barriers, no gate keeping.” For a player deciding what to do next, the practical implication is simple: start with what you want to play, then look for a workable combination of controls, settings, and pace.
