To keep parallel Claude Code agents from sharing Laravel state, give each Git worktree its own SQLite database and Herd site, then remove those resources when the worktree is archived. Baptiste Bouillot’s Orca setup automates that lifecycle with shared scripts and small per-repository shims. It is one author’s implementation, not an official Orca manual or a guarantee that every Laravel project will work without adjustments.
Why isolate more than the Git branch?
A Git worktree gives each agent its own working directory and branch, but that alone does not separate everything an application uses. Multiple worktrees can still point at the same database, local domain, or service port. Bouillot’s design gives each worktree a separate SQLite file and Herd site, and conditionally assigns a Reverb port. This is a design rationale, not a measured comparison of alternatives.
The intended lifecycle is straightforward: Orca runs a setup script when a worktree is created; an archive script removes the worktree’s Herd configuration and SQLite file before the directory is destroyed.
What the setup script configures
Resolve the main checkout and load environment values
The script uses ORCA_ROOT_PATH when it is set; otherwise, it derives the main checkout path with Git. If the main checkout has a .env, the script copies it into the worktree. If not, it falls back to .env.example. It then exports the loaded values for later commands.

This is a consequential credential decision: Bouillot notes that the root .env contains real secrets and API keys. Before adopting this pattern, decide whether agents should receive those credentials at all, whether they need a reduced-privilege environment, and how copied secrets will be protected and removed. Avoid copying production credentials into an agent workspace unless that access is explicitly approved.
Derive a worktree-specific site name
The script takes the workspace name from ORCA_WORKSPACE_NAME or falls back to the current Git branch. It sanitizes that value into a local site name and shortens long names with a checksum suffix. The author says the length cap is intended to stay within certificate common-name limits.

Point Laravel at isolated state
For each worktree, the script configures the database path as database/database.sqlite, sets DB_CONNECTION=sqlite, sets APP_URL to the derived HTTPS Herd domain, and switches MAIL_MAILER to log. The database file therefore lives inside that worktree rather than being shared with another agent.

Assign a Reverb port when applicable
If the script detects Laravel Reverb, it derives a stable port from the site name and writes it to several environment keys. This is the author’s collision-avoidance method; the article reports no measured collision rate. Projects with different Reverb configuration may need their own checks to confirm that all relevant settings use the selected port.

Match project PHP and frontend tooling
The script links and secures the Herd site, and attempts to isolate the PHP version parsed from composer.json. It then installs Composer dependencies, clears Laravel configuration, generates an application key, runs migrations and seeds, and optionally links storage. For frontend dependencies and builds, it uses the package manager indicated by the project’s lockfile. The author also describes copying .mcp.json from the main checkout and conditionally handling private Composer authentication.
These steps depend on the project’s files, credentials, and available tooling. Treat the script as a pattern to adapt, not as a drop-in guarantee for every Laravel repository.

How archive cleanup works—and what to watch
The archive script reconstructs the same site name, checks for an empty workspace slug, then attempts to unsecure, unisolate, and unlink the Herd site. It deletes the worktree’s SQLite file and restarts Herd.

That favors removal progress over guaranteed cleanup: a Herd command can fail while the worktree still disappears. A practical operational safeguard is to make leftover Herd sites or database files detectable and provide a way to remove them manually.

Keep reusable logic outside each repository
Bouillot keeps the shared implementation in ~/.scripts/laravel/ and puts short shim scripts in each repository. The shims invoke the shared setup or archive script, and Orca’s repository settings point to those shims. This lets one shared implementation serve multiple projects while preserving repository-specific entry points.
When adapting the pattern, verify that each shim resolves the intended shared script and that Orca invokes setup and archive at the appropriate worktree lifecycle events. Also check that the shared script’s assumptions—such as Herd availability, Laravel structure, Composer authentication, and lockfile-based package-manager detection—match each repository.
What this approach does and does not establish
The article describes a concrete per-worktree convention: isolated SQLite state and a local Herd site, configured during setup and removed during archiving. It does not report benchmarks, success rates, measured time savings, or a quantified cost. Its claims of “zero manual setup” and “costs nothing” are qualitative framing rather than statistics.
