I built Colorize Old Photos to add plausible color to black-and-white pictures and, when requested, repair scratches, creases, and fading. The biggest lessons were architectural: slow inference needs a job queue pattern rather than a long-lived request, restoration is a separate task from colorization, and deletion promises have to cover every provider that receives an image. The implementation and model observations below are my account as the app’s maker, not independently reproduced tests.
What I built and how the pieces fit
Colorize Old Photos offers a free, watermarked preview and one-time credit packs for full-resolution downloads rather than a subscription. The stack I reported using was Next.js 16 App Router deployed to Cloudflare Workers with OpenNext. D1 stores accounts, credits, jobs, and rate limits; R2 holds uploads and results, with a one-day lifecycle rule; and Cloudflare Images creates a watermarked 720-pixel preview.
For inference, I used fal-ai/ddcolor for colorization and fal-ai/nano-banana-2/edit at 2K for restoration. PayPal Orders v2 and a webhook handle payments, while Google OAuth and email magic links handle login. This is the stack I described for my app; it is not a claim that these are the only suitable services or that the components have been independently tested here. Source account
Choose the workflow by the job the photo needs
Colorizing means estimating plausible colors for a monochrome image. Repairing means changing visible damage such as scratches, creases, or fading. They can be combined in a user-facing product, but they are not interchangeable model tasks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Workflow | What it is for | Reported result in my test | Job and retention handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colorize only | Add plausible color without explicitly asking to repair damage. | In my test with a damaged public-domain Library of Congress photo, CodeFormer plus DDColor colorized the image but did not repair scratches or creases; I also found that CodeFormer smoothed faces. This is one reported test, not a universal model ranking. | I used DDColor for colorize-only requests. The slow-inference job pattern and provider-copy deletion setting described below apply to submitted model work. |
| Colorize and restore | Add color while also attempting to repair visible damage. | I chose an image-editing model for restoration after the test above. I did not establish a controlled quality comparison against colorize-only or a complete price comparison. | My restoration path used fal-ai/nano-banana-2/edit at 2K. I applied the fal media-retention preference to each submit request. |
The practical selection rule is to avoid implying that colorization alone will mend damage. When a user asks for both, route the request to a workflow intended to edit the image, and explain that outcomes can vary by photo. The model choice here reflects my implementation and observations, not a general guarantee of superior restoration. Source account
Why I turned inference into a job
A model call can outlast the time a user expects a web request to remain open. In my experience, a cold DDColor start could take about 90 seconds; that is my approximate observation, not an independent benchmark or an industry-wide latency figure.

- Persist the work first. I create a job record in D1 rather than making the browser wait on a single request.
- Return a job ID. The application can acknowledge the submission while the model work continues.
- Poll for progress. The client checks the job, and the server checks fal’s status and advances the stored job as needed.
- Expose a finished result. Once processing is complete, the app can provide the preview or next step without relying on the original request staying open.
This pattern makes the lifecycle explicit: submission, processing, status checks, and result delivery. It also gives the application a place to associate credits and job state with a request, rather than treating long-running inference as a synchronous page action. Source account

Deletion has to include provider-side copies
I initially treated the one-day R2 lifecycle rule as if it covered the whole image journey. It did not account for fal’s generated-media copy. I added X-Fal-Object-Lifecycle-Preference with a 3600-second expiry to each submit request, then reported verifying that the generated file stopped being served.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The distinction matters: an application’s own storage policy cannot establish what happens to a copy held by an inference provider. In my implementation, the 24-hour R2 lifecycle and fal’s separate one-hour preference addressed different locations and timelines. As I put it: “If you promise deletion, check your providers’ copies too.” Source account

- A daily budget cap in USD.
- Fixed-window limits keyed by IP address, subnet, and device, stored in D1.
- Turnstile checks.
- Upload moderation.
These are layers rather than substitutes for one another: budgets limit spend, rate limits restrict repeated submissions, and challenge and moderation checks add friction and screening around uploads. I am describing the controls in my app, not claiming a measured reduction in abuse or a particular savings figure. Source account

Two deployment details that caused friction
Convert HEIC before Cloudflare Images
In my setup, Cloudflare Images could not decode HEIC, so I converted iPhone images client-side before sending them through the image path. If accepting phone photos, verify the formats your chosen processing service can decode and convert unsupported formats before upload or transformation rather than discovering the mismatch after a user submits a file. Separate build-time and deploy-time variables
I found that NEXT_PUBLIC_* values needed to be available as build variables in Workers Builds. I also used keep_vars: true so that dashboard-only variables were preserved through wrangler deploy. This distinction is useful when a deployment appears successful but a client-visible value was not embedded at build time, or when deployment configuration overwrites dashboard settings. What this account does—and does not—establish
The source page says “Posted on Oct 1” but does not state a year, so the timing cannot be pinned to a publication year from that page. The latency, model behavior, configuration details, and retention verification above are my reported implementation experience. They do not establish a controlled model benchmark, a universal result for damaged photographs, or a complete comparison of workflow costs. Source account
