musslop is a free, open-source tool I built to loop chosen sections of existing music and export them for tabletop RPGs and game prototypes. I used Python, FastAPI, librosa, React, and the Web Audio API. It gives a facilitator control over when music moves on; it does not listen to a session or automatically react to gameplay.
Why build a music looper for tabletop sessions?
A song follows a fixed timeline. A tabletop scene does not. A quiet negotiation may last two minutes or twenty, and a fight may begin whenever the players make a choice. If a track keeps advancing regardless, its musical rise or change can land at the wrong moment.
I wanted a way to work with sections of existing tracks, repeat a selected passage, and cue a transition when the scene changed. In my project article, I describe musslop as a tool for making and exporting loops for game-audio workflows. The transition remains under the facilitator’s control: as I put it, “You decide when the music moves on. It doesn’t listen to your session or automatically react to gameplay.”
What does musslop do—and what does it not do?
The tool is for preparing loops from existing music and manually controlling transitions. That can make a soundtrack feel responsive to a session, but it is not the same as automatic adaptive music. It does not detect dialogue, combat, player choices, or game state and then choose music on its own.

A loop repeats a region. A transition moves playback to another section or source. Adaptive scoring can go further by changing musical material in response to state, often using sections or layers composed to work together. Those are distinct problems, even if all three can contribute to music that feels suited to a scene.
How does looping a section work in Web Audio?
The Web Audio API models audio processing as a routing graph and is designed for uses that include interactive applications and games. For an AudioBufferSourceNode, looping is off by default. Set its loop property to true, then define the region with loopStart and loopEnd. The end point is exclusive: playback repeats from the start through the point before the end.

The requested start() offset still determines where playback begins. If that offset is before the loop region, the source plays from the offset and enters the repeated region when it reaches it. In other words, setting a loop region does not mean playback immediately jumps to its start. The loop continues until the source is stopped or otherwise ends under the API’s conditions. See the Web Audio API 1.1 specification for the source and looping behavior.

Technically, a player can repeat a region of a buffer. Musically, the end and beginning still need to sound as if they belong together. A boundary can be awkward if it cuts through a note, leaves a beat incomplete, changes harmony abruptly, or exposes a gap or click. The API defines playback behavior; it cannot make arbitrary points in a recording musically compatible.

That limitation matters with ordinary stereo tracks. A conventional recording generally does not promise that any two sections will join cleanly, or that a chorus can follow a verse at any point. Music authored for interactive use can instead provide compatible sections, stems, or transition points. As the project article notes, those guarantees are not inherent in a typical stereo recording.
How can a facilitator cue a transition?
For a tabletop game, the useful control may be human judgment rather than game-state detection: let a tense passage continue while the scene needs it, then cue the next passage when the moment changes. A basic buffer loop handles repetition of one region; moving between sections requires a playback plan for the next source or region.

For browser game audio, useful general patterns include preparing assets before they are needed, scheduling sources accurately, and adjusting gain to crossfade between aligned mixes or layers. The web.dev game-audio guide describes synchronized, equal-length layers and gain changes between intensity mixes. The W3C’s Web Audio use cases and requirements likewise discuss accurately scheduled playback and automated crossfading as ways to support smoother transitions. These are broader game-audio techniques, not a claim that musslop implements every pattern.

The project article names Python, FastAPI, and librosa on the backend side, with React and the Web Audio API in the browser-facing stack. That combination reflects two parts of the task: handling audio and loop preparation in the application, and providing interactive playback controls in a web interface. The article is a first-person account; it does not establish deployment requirements, exact signal-processing algorithms, or measured performance.

When is this approach a good fit?
- Use a manually cued loop workflow when you want to repeat a passage from existing music and decide yourself when the scene should move on.
- Prepare compatible sections or stems when transitions need to sound deliberate rather than simply jump between arbitrary points in one stereo recording.
- Use game-state-driven adaptive scoring when the application must change music automatically in response to defined gameplay events; that requires a game integration and musical material designed for those transitions.
