I built a tool to help verify bug bounty opportunities because I was tired of encountering scams. A tool can help organize checks, but it cannot establish that a program is safe, guarantee a reward, or decide whether a particular test is legally authorized. Those judgments depend on the current program rules and the specific asset being tested.
The details that would make this a true first-person build story—what the tool checks, how it works, and what happened to its maker—aren’t established here. Rather than invent them, this article explains the verification process the tool is meant to support and what researchers should confirm before testing.
How can I verify a bug bounty program is real?
Start with a program listing on a platform or an organization-controlled page, then follow the link to the program’s own current brief. A platform listing is a starting point, not proof that every listing has been independently certified or that a particular test is authorized. Bugcrowd invites researchers to join public programs and recommends reading its code of conduct and standard disclosure terms before participating (Bugcrowd researcher onboarding).

- Source: Does the program appear on an official platform or a page controlled by the organization? Navigate to the listing from that source rather than relying on a forwarded message or an unfamiliar link.
- Scope: Which exact domains, apps, APIs, or other assets are in scope? Do not assume that an organization’s whole digital footprint is covered.
- Authorization and safe harbor: Does the brief explain what good-faith testing is permitted and under what conditions? Safe-harbor protections are program-specific and conditional on following the rules.
- Testing limits: What methods are allowed, and are there restrictions on automated tools, request rates, accounts, or data access?
- Reporting: What is the official submission channel, and what information does the program ask you to provide?
- Reward and eligibility: Are reward amounts, eligible findings, exclusions, and researcher eligibility stated in the brief? Treat them as written terms, not as a promise that every report will qualify.
- Disclosure: What does the policy say about publishing details, timing, and coordination with the organization?
These checks help establish who is inviting testing and what participation allows. They do not prove an opportunity is scam-free or guarantee payment.
How do I know if a bug bounty is a scam?
No single check can conclusively label an opportunity safe. Treat a request as unverified if you cannot trace it to a current official program brief, if the assets and rules are unclear, or if the sender directs you away from the stated reporting channel. Pause before testing or sharing sensitive information; independently locate the organization’s official program page and compare its terms with the invitation.

A credible-looking listing is not enough on its own. Confirm that the brief identifies the relevant assets, permitted methods, reporting route, reward terms, and disclosure conditions. If the invitation conflicts with the current brief, ask the program through its official channel for clarification before proceeding.

Only test an asset when the current program brief explicitly includes it or the program has confirmed its status through an official channel. Check the exact host, application, API, or other identifier; a related company, subdomain, third-party service, or adjacent system is not automatically included.

Read exclusions and testing limits alongside the asset list. A program may allow testing of an in-scope property while restricting particular techniques or automated traffic. For example, Intigriti’s program-detail guidance describes requirements in the individual program brief, and one live program detail lists a limit for automated-tool requests. That example is not a general limit for other programs: use the current brief for the opportunity you are considering (Intigriti program details guidance; Intigriti program detail).
Bugcrowd’s safe-harbor guidance likewise emphasizes explicit in-scope properties and official communication channels. Its description of disclose.io calls it “a collaborative, open source and vendor-agnostic project to standardize best practices for providing a safe harbor for security researchers within bug bounty and vulnerability disclosure programs” (Bugcrowd, “Disclose.io and Safe Harbor”). Safe harbor still depends on the program’s wording and your compliance with it; it is not blanket permission to test related assets or use any method.

Where should I report a vulnerability?
Use the reporting channel named in the current program brief, such as its official platform submission flow or designated security contact. Include the information the program requests and avoid sending details to unrelated addresses or publishing them while the report is being handled.

Disclosure rules vary. Bugcrowd recommends coordinated disclosure for new public programs and explains that the timing and level of disclosure should be agreed with the organization (Bugcrowd, “Public Disclosure Policy”). HackerOne cautions against “Never using disclosure as leverage” (HackerOne, “Requesting Disclosure”). Follow the applicable program policy; public disclosure is not automatically permitted, and a vulnerability report should not be used to pressure an organization.

What a verification tool can—and cannot—tell you
A verification tool can be useful if it helps a researcher check program details consistently before acting. But no features, validation method, test results, or effectiveness figures are established for the tool behind this story, so it would be misleading to claim that it detects scams or verifies programs automatically.
Even a well-designed checklist or tool can only organize available evidence. Program terms can change, and authorization remains tied to the current brief, the particular asset, and the testing method. When any of those are unclear, stop and ask the program through its official channel rather than treating a tool’s result as permission.
