A browser-based word counter can analyze text without sending it to a server, but the phrase “runs in your browser” alone does not prove what a particular page transmits. Building a useful counter also means deciding what counts as a word, how to handle languages that do not separate words with spaces, and what to do when a browser lacks the right text-segmentation API.

My main lesson was that word count is not a universal measurement: it is the output of a rule. For anyone asking how to count words in a browser—or building a small text utility—the rule, language support, compatibility, and data handling all deserve explicit attention.

What does “client-side text analysis” mean?

Client-side analysis means the computation happens in JavaScript on the user’s device, inside the browser, rather than being performed by a server. That can be a useful design for a small text tool, but it does not by itself establish that the page makes no network requests or that the text never leaves the device. A page could analyze text locally and still send other data, or transmit input through a separate integration.

To make a specific “your text never leaves your device” claim, inspect the deployed page’s code and network behavior, including relevant integrations, and state the scope and date of the check. The browser’s ability to perform an operation locally is not evidence about what an individual website actually sends.

How should a browser word counter decide what a word is?

A counter needs a defined unit. Splitting text wherever there is a space is easy, but it treats whitespace-separated chunks as words. Punctuation, repeated spaces, and languages that commonly omit spaces between words can make that rule misleading. The result is a count under one particular rule—not an objective count that every product will share.

Use locale-aware word boundaries for multilingual text

The browser’s Intl.Segmenter API can divide text into word-like segments using a locale and a requested granularity. For a word count, a tool can request word granularity and count segments marked as word-like, rather than counting every segment or splitting only on spaces.

This matters for languages commonly written without spaces between words, including Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Lao, Khmer, and Myanmar. MDN’s Japanese example demonstrates the difference: a space split leaves the sample as one unsplit string, while locale-sensitive segmentation identifies multiple word-like units. Locale-aware boundaries are more appropriate for multilingual text, but they do not guarantee that every counter or locale will produce identical results.

Characters and sentences need their own definitions

“Character count” can mean different things too. JavaScript string length counts UTF-16 code units, which is not always the same as the number of user-perceived characters. Intl.Segmenter also supports grapheme segmentation, which can count grapheme clusters, as well as sentence segmentation. A counter should name the unit it reports rather than presenting code units, graphemes, words, and sentences as interchangeable measurements.

Does Intl.Segmenter work in older browsers?

MDN currently marks Intl.Segmenter Baseline 2024 and cautions that it may not be available in older browser versions and devices. A tool should check whether the API exists before calling it and explain what happens when it does not. A basic whitespace split or regular expression can serve as a limited fallback, but it is not equivalent to locale-aware segmentation.

The fallback behavior of a particular counter should be verified in its implementation; it cannot be inferred from the API documentation. Likewise, browser support should be described only for browsers and devices the developer actually tested.

Does a word counter upload my text or save it?

Processing and storage are separate questions. A counter may hold input only in page memory, save it for the current tab, or persist it for later visits. None of those storage choices alone establishes whether a page also sends data over the network.

If a tool saves text, it should disclose the mechanism and its scope. MDN explains that sessionStorage is scoped to a tab and origin and is cleared when the tab closes; localStorage is scoped to an origin and persists across browser restarts. Both APIs are synchronous, and browser privacy modes or policies can affect persistence. These details describe the browser APIs, not any particular counter’s configuration.

The broader Storage API can estimate storage use and request persistence against browser eviction; it is available in secure contexts and workers. That is relevant to a tool saving drafts or offline state, not proof that text analysis itself is local.

When would a Web Worker help?

A Web Worker runs work away from the page’s main thread and communicates by messages. For heavier processing, this can help keep the page responsive while analysis runs. But it adds implementation complexity, and ordinary message data is copied or serialized rather than shared as the same object.

A small counter does not automatically need a worker. The choice depends on the size and complexity of the workload; claims that a worker improved a particular tool require measurements from that tool under stated conditions.

What I would make explicit in a word counter

  • Counting rule: Say whether words mean whitespace-separated chunks or locale-aware word-like segments, and give a short example.
  • Language behavior: Identify the locale used for segmentation and avoid implying one rule gives universally identical counts.
  • Compatibility: Check for Intl.Segmenter, describe the fallback and its limits, and name only browsers actually tested.
  • Character units: State whether the character figure counts UTF-16 code units or grapheme clusters.
  • Data handling: Distinguish in-memory processing from browser storage, and both from network transmission.
  • Responsiveness: Consider a worker when real workloads justify one; do not claim performance gains without measurements.
