A hotel ChatGPT integration connects the conversation to an external travel service that can search lodging information or perform specific, approved actions. It is not an unrestricted pipeline into your accounts or messages. In a reservation flow, ChatGPT may ask your permission to share your name and email address with the reservation provider; the provider may then process additional information under its own privacy policy.
The word “plugin” is now imprecise. OpenAI’s current help material describes plugins as workflows that can include connected apps, while apps are the external service connections. Whether a hotel service appears for you, what it can do, and which fields it receives depend on the app, your account or workspace controls, region, plan, provider account, and the action you approve.
What a hotel “plugin” means in current ChatGPT
Older discussions use plugin as a general name for a ChatGPT extension that calls an outside service. OpenAI’s current terminology separates the pieces:

- A plugin is a workflow or integration package that may include one or more connected apps.
- An app is the connection to an external provider, such as a travel or reservation service.
- The app’s listed capabilities and your granted permissions determine whether it can search, retrieve information, create a booking link, or take another supported action.
OpenAI’s 2025 announcement about apps named Booking.com and Expedia as pilot partners. That announcement establishes the launch context, not a promise that a legacy plugin is still available, that every account sees the same listing, or that every hotel reservation can be completed inside ChatGPT. Availability can change with the product surface, account, subscription or workspace policy, country, and provider.

In practical terms, treat “hotel plugin” as shorthand for a hotel-search or booking app that ChatGPT is authorized to call. The app does not automatically receive every message in your chat or unrestricted access to an account. OpenAI’s plugin documentation says an integration cannot access content beyond the permissions granted to the relevant provider account or to an administrator-managed source. Supported actions and approval requirements vary.
How a hotel search or reservation request flows
The exact screens differ by app, but a typical request follows this sequence:
- You describe the trip. Your prompt can contain dates, destination, number of guests, room preferences, budget, accessibility needs, or other criteria. ChatGPT uses that conversation to understand what to ask the connected service.
- ChatGPT identifies a suitable connection. If an eligible app is available and enabled, ChatGPT can send the relevant request to that service. If no app is available, it may provide ordinary web-search results or general advice instead.
- The app receives only the data needed for its supported operation. A search may require destination and dates. An account-based action may require an authorized account connection. The integration’s permission screen and privacy terms are the authoritative description of its fields.
- The provider returns results or requests approval. Search results can include properties, room options, prices, availability, or a link to continue. An action such as booking, changing a reservation, or accessing loyalty details may require a separate confirmation.
- A reservation step may trigger a sharing prompt. OpenAI’s Help Center says: “When booking a reservation, ChatGPT may ask for permission to share your name and email address with the reservation provider.” The wording matters: it is a possible, permission-based step, not a claim that every hotel flow always sends those fields.
- Booking is either handed off or completed through a supported action. Some integrations may open the provider’s booking page; others may support an action in the connected experience. The available sources do not establish one universal handoff pattern.
- Confirmation and later handling belong to both sides. ChatGPT can display the result of the action, while the provider handles its reservation record, customer-service process, and retention under its own terms.
Asking for hotel suggestions is therefore different from authorizing a booking. A search can be informational, while an account connection or reservation approval can send identifying or transaction-related information to the provider.
What ChatGPT may share during booking
Name and email are the clearest OpenAI-documented fields
OpenAI’s reservation guidance identifies your name and email address as information ChatGPT may ask to share with the reservation provider. The prompt is conditional: you can be asked for permission at the booking stage, and the sharing depends on that authorization. The statement does not specify that those fields are required for every provider, region, account type, or booking method.

Your trip request can be part of the provider interaction
A hotel service must receive enough information to answer the operation you requested. Depending on the app, that can include destination, check-in and check-out dates, guest or room counts, filters, and preferences. OpenAI’s general plugin material does not publish a single field-by-field schema for all hotel connections, so you should use the app’s permission screen and policy rather than assume that every integration handles the same search details.
Account authorization changes the scope
If an app asks you to connect a provider account, the account connection can enable actions or information that an unauthenticated search cannot. OpenAI describes access as limited by the permissions granted to the provider account or administrator-managed source. A connected account is therefore a distinct decision from allowing a one-time search request.
What a provider may process: the Expedia example
Expedia’s privacy statement illustrates why a provider’s own policy matters. Its disclosed categories are specific to Expedia and must not be treated as the universal data flow for every hotel app.

Expedia also says third parties are independently responsible for their processing under their own privacy policies. That means seeing an Expedia disclosure cannot tell you what another travel service, hotel chain, or future app will collect. Check the named provider every time rather than copying assumptions from a different integration.

Which privacy policy governs the exchange?
OpenAI’s product and permission rules
ChatGPT controls the conversation interface, app availability, authorization prompts, and the action you confirm. OpenAI’s connected-app guidance says app data is handled according to the app’s terms of service and privacy policy, and that capabilities vary by app. OpenAI’s plugin guidance also expects integrations to disclose their privacy practices.
The connected provider’s terms
The reservation provider decides how it processes information delivered to its service, including search requests, account data, booking records, and technical logs described in its policy. Its policy can cover retention, disclosures, security practices, customer support, and rights requests. Read the policy for the exact app shown in your ChatGPT interface.
Your account or workspace administrator
In an organization, an administrator can manage which apps are available and which connected sources employees may use. An app’s access boundary can therefore be narrower than the provider’s theoretical capability. Conversely, a workspace rule may prevent you from using a connection that is visible to consumers. Confirm the account context before assuming a feature is available.

- Capability: Is it limited to searching and retrieving information, or can it take an action such as creating a booking or opening a provider account page?
- Authentication: Can you search without signing in, or is a provider account required for the requested action?
- Approval: Does ChatGPT ask before sending identifying information or executing the reservation?
- Data scope: Which conversation details, account fields, and technical identifiers are listed in the permission notice or policy?
- Destination: Does the flow stay in the connected experience, or does it hand you to the provider’s website or app?
These questions prevent a common mistake: treating the ability to display hotel results as proof that the app can see your complete travel history, payment details, or other account content. The available OpenAI documentation supports a permission-limited model, not unrestricted access. It does not publish a complete current schema for every hotel integration.
How to evaluate a specific hotel app before using it
Use this procedure whenever a new travel connection appears:
- Open the app’s current listing. Confirm the provider name, stated capabilities, supported countries or regions, and whether the feature is a pilot, preview, or generally available.
- Read the authorization prompt in full. Note whether it requests a name, email address, account sign-in, calendar or loyalty access, or permission to perform a booking action. Do not approve a broader scope merely to run an informational search.
- Open the provider’s terms and privacy policy. Look for search data, preferences, account identifiers, booking records, technical logs, retention, and third-party disclosures. The provider’s policy, not another company’s policy, controls its processing.
- Separate search from booking. Run an unauthenticated search first if the app supports one. Decide separately whether the convenience of account connection or in-chat booking justifies the additional data exchange.
- Check the handoff. Before confirming, identify whether you are being sent to the provider’s site and whether the final payment, cancellation, and customer-service terms are shown there.
- Revoke access you no longer need. If you connected an account for a one-time trip, remove the connection through the relevant ChatGPT account or workspace controls and the provider’s account settings where available.
Common situations and what to do
The app is missing
Availability can depend on account, plan, workspace policy, region, product surface, and provider rollout. Check that you are using the current ChatGPT interface and that your administrator has not disabled connected apps. Do not infer that a pilot announcement guarantees access today.
ChatGPT asks for more information than expected
Pause and compare the request with the action. A search may need trip criteria; a booking may ask for name and email; an account-based feature may request sign-in. If the scope is unclear, cancel and read the app’s policy before authorizing.

The provider page asks you to sign in again
A handoff can require a separate provider session even when ChatGPT initiated the search. Verify the domain and the provider’s privacy notice before entering credentials. ChatGPT’s ability to show a result does not mean it can complete every provider-side step.
You want to avoid sending identifying information
Use the integration only for searches if that mode is available, decline the reservation permission prompt, or search the provider directly. Without the requested authorization, the app may be unable to create or finalize a reservation.
You need to know exactly what was sent
Review the permission screen, the provider’s policy, and any confirmation or activity record supplied by the app. Current official documentation does not provide one universal, field-by-field report covering every hotel connection, so an app-specific review is necessary.

What is and is not established about hotel plugins
It is established that ChatGPT can connect to external services for information retrieval or supported actions, that access is controlled by permissions, and that a reservation flow may ask permission to share a user’s name and email with the provider. It is also established that connected-app data is subject to the app’s terms and privacy policy, while Expedia publicly describes additional categories of travel, account, booking-link, and technical request information.
What is not established by the current official material is a complete list of hotel integrations available to every user or a universal schema showing every field exchanged by every provider. Availability, capabilities, required account connections, and data categories can change. For a real booking decision, the current app listing, authorization prompt, and named provider’s privacy policy are the controlling references.
