HOSHIKAGE reduces sword combat to two touch gestures: swipe in the direction of an incoming attack to deflect it, then press and hold to perform Issen, a finishing cut against enemies whose stance has been broken. The challenge is not memorizing a long command list. It is reading attack direction and timing while several enemies strike from both sides or overlap one another’s attack windows.
Successful deflections can be chained into Quickening, which helps break enemy stance. Once several opponents are staggered, one Issen can cut down multiple targets at once. That read, deflect, break, and finish rhythm drives both the wordless Story mode and the score-focused Endless mode.
The two gestures that define HOSHIKAGE
Directional swipe: your defensive attack input
On a touchscreen, swipe up, down, left, or right to match the direction of an incoming strike. A correct directional deflection protects the swordswoman and applies pressure to the attacker’s stance. The gesture is not a general-purpose attack button: its direction must correspond to what the enemy is doing.

Because attacks can arrive from either side, you must watch the whole encounter rather than focus on one opponent. A swipe that matches one attacker may be wrong for another attacker whose strike lands at nearly the same moment. The core skill is recognizing which attack is active and responding in its direction before the impact window closes.

Press and hold: Issen
Press and hold after enemies have been staggered to unleash Issen, the game’s decisive finishing strike. Issen is a conversion move, not a replacement for deflection: it becomes available as the reward for creating an opening through successful defensive timing and stance breaks.
When multiple enemies are staggered together, a single Issen can cut them down at once. The efficient sequence is therefore to keep deflecting while a group attacks, build enough pressure to create a shared opening, and spend that opening on one hold rather than finishing opponents one by one.
How a deflection becomes a stance break
Read direction before you move
Each attack presents a directional cue. On touch controls, choose the matching swipe rather than swiping toward the enemy’s position or using the same direction repeatedly. An attack from the left does not necessarily call for a leftward screen movement; use the direction indicated by the strike itself.

A correctly oriented swipe made too early or too late can fail because the attack window has not yet opened or has already closed. Treat every enemy motion as a short timing problem: identify the direction, wait for the strike to become actionable, and complete the swipe in that window.
Handle overlapping attacks
HOSHIKAGE deliberately complicates the basic one-enemy pattern. Enemies can attack from both sides, overlap their attack windows, and insert one enemy’s strike into another enemy’s combo. You may need to deflect one direction, immediately read a second direction, and continue the chain without assuming the same attacker is still responsible for the next hit.

When two cues appear close together, prioritize the attack that is about to connect. Do not hold the screen waiting for a perfect visual pause; the system expects a sequence of discrete directional responses. If one enemy’s strike is inserted between another enemy’s combo, the correct response can change in the middle of what looks like a single pattern.
Build chains instead of resetting after every hit
Successful deflections can be chained. The App Store description calls the resulting effect Quickening: sustained, accurate defense helps break enemies’ stance. A chain is valuable because it turns survival into progress toward the finishing window. Missing a response does more than cost a moment of safety; it interrupts the rhythm you were using to create a stance break.
Think of Quickening as a reason to stay engaged after the first successful parry. Once you have deflected one strike, continue reading the next cue rather than immediately searching for an attack button. The game’s normal damage loop is replaced by a defensive chain that gradually creates the opportunity to finish.
The complete combat loop, step by step
- Scan the field. Identify every visible attacker and note whether threats are approaching from the left, right, or another direction represented by the incoming cue.
- Match the next strike. Swipe up, down, left, or right in the attack’s direction during its active timing window.
- Confirm the chain mentally. After a successful deflection, immediately look for the next cue. Enemies may overlap or insert a new strike into an existing combo.
- Maintain Quickening. Continue accurate deflections so the chain can help break enemy stance. Avoid replacing the defensive rhythm with random swipes.
- Create a stagger. When the chain has broken an enemy’s stance, the opponent is open for the finishing action. Several enemies can reach this vulnerable state together.
- Spend the opening. Press and hold to perform Issen. If multiple enemies are staggered, the one decisive cut can remove them simultaneously.
- Return to reading. After Issen, resume scanning immediately. Endless encounters continue, and Story or boss sequences may present another attack pattern.
How to parry more reliably
Use the cue, not the enemy’s location
A common beginner mistake is swiping toward an enemy because that feels like an attack. In HOSHIKAGE, the swipe is a directional deflection. Base the direction on the incoming strike’s cue and motion, not on where the character happens to stand.
Separate direction from timing
When a parry fails, diagnose the two variables separately. If the swipe direction was wrong, improve cue recognition. If the direction was correct but the hit still connected, adjust when you begin and complete the gesture. This distinction is especially useful in dense encounters, where a correct direction can be followed immediately by a different one.

Expect rhythm changes
Do not assume an enemy’s combo will alternate predictably or that all opponents share one tempo. One enemy can insert a strike between another enemy’s attacks. Treat each incoming cue as a fresh event even when it appears inside a familiar-looking sequence.
Use the smallest deliberate movement
On a phone or tablet, a controlled swipe is easier to repeat than a large, hurried gesture. Keep your finger ready to change direction for the next cue. The system is built around one-finger input, so the limiting factor is attention and timing rather than the number of fingers or buttons you can reach.
What Issen is—and when to use it
Issen is HOSHIKAGE’s high-value payoff: press and hold to deliver a decisive cut once an enemy’s stance has been broken. It is not simply a stronger version of a normal strike. You earn the opening by deflecting attacks and sustaining the chain that produces Quickening.
Use Issen when the encounter contains more than one staggered opponent whenever possible. Because one Issen can cut down multiple staggered enemies, waiting briefly for a second enemy to enter the same vulnerable state can produce a better result than spending the move on the first target alone. That choice has a risk: waiting requires you to keep reading and deflecting while other attacks continue. In a dangerous sequence, taking the available stagger may be safer than holding out for a larger group.
The practical decision is therefore based on two questions: how many enemies are currently staggered, and can you safely answer the next attack while preserving the opening? If the answer to the second question is no, use Issen rather than gambling the entire chain.

Touch, keyboard, and mouse controls
HOSHIKAGE is documented as a free browser game with touch, keyboard, and mouse support. On a phone or tablet, the intended interaction is direct: directional swipes for deflection and a press-and-hold for Issen. The browser version also accepts keyboard and mouse input, making the same timing system playable without a touchscreen.
The published descriptions identify the actions but do not specify a universal keyboard key map or mouse-button assignment. If you are playing in a browser, use the controls shown by the game’s current interface rather than assuming a particular key arrangement. Regardless of device, the decision sequence remains identical: identify direction, answer on time, continue the chain, then hold for Issen after the stance break.

Story: narrative through action
Story mode communicates without conventional dialogue. The relationship between the swordswoman and the fox-masked figure is conveyed through their clashes, movement, and gestures. The absence of spoken exposition means the combat scenes are part of the storytelling rather than a separate battle screen attached to it.
Endless: survival and score
Endless has no final endpoint. It asks how long you can survive successive attacks while maintaining deflection chains and pursuing a higher score. Since enemies can overlap their attack windows or insert strikes into combos, endurance depends on accurate reading rather than simply repeating one swipe pattern.
Boss encounters use the same rule set
Boss battles test the same read, deflect, break, and finish rhythm against more demanding encounters. A boss does not turn HOSHIKAGE into a separate command-heavy fighting game. Instead, it increases the pressure on the skills you already use: recognizing direction, responding within the timing window, sustaining Quickening, and choosing when to spend Issen.

Approach a boss as a pattern-reading exercise. Resist the temptation to swipe continuously. Wait for each actionable cue, answer it cleanly, and treat any inserted or overlapping strike as a new event. When the boss’s stance is broken, Issen is the conversion point that turns the defensive sequence into damage.

- Start with one attacker. Concentrate on matching direction and timing without worrying about an Issen opportunity.
- Add a second side. Practice switching your attention between attacks arriving from the left and right.
- Preserve a chain. After each successful deflection, immediately search for the next cue instead of relaxing after the first success.
- Delay the finish. When possible, let a second enemy become staggered before holding for Issen, provided you can safely answer the next strike.
- Test endurance in Endless. Use the mode’s continuing waves to practice recovery from faster overlaps and longer sequences.
The essential lesson is that “one finger” describes the control method, not the difficulty. HOSHIKAGE asks one finger to make direction-sensitive decisions at the correct moment, then to hold only when the defensive chain has created a real finishing opening.
