Hindsight can retain and retrieve individual hearing records yet still fail to synthesize what those records say about one judge. In a legal-practice agent described by developer Karunya Muddana, the cause was the consolidation scope: its default grouped observations by the complete set of tags, so hearings from different cases did not meet in the same judge-level group. Adding explicit judge, opposing-counsel, and case scopes gave the same memory separate, overlapping views. That is a configuration lesson, not evidence that an agent can reliably predict a judge.
What was the agent trying to remember?
Muddana describes Tareekh as a memory aid for litigators. Lawyers provide diary photographs, court order sheets, deeds, legal notices, and typed notes. An ingestion workflow uses OCR, segmentation, repair, and review before storing hearing-level entries in Hindsight. The project is described as using FastAPI, Next.js, Gemini on Vertex AI, a local Docker deployment of Hindsight, and SQLite for a case registry. One memory bank per lawyer is intended to make records from that lawyer’s different matters available together.

Why the default scope hid a judge-level pattern
A hearing memory in the example might have tags such as case:C5, judge:J1, and counsel:OC4. Tags can label memories for later filtering. But labeling and consolidation are different operations: a shared judge tag does not, by itself, guarantee that records with different other tags will contribute to the same synthesized observation.

Hindsight’s Retain API reference says observation_scopes controls which observations a memory contributes to during consolidation. The documented combined default makes a consolidation pass over all tags together. Thus, records tagged case:C5, judge:J1, counsel:OC4 and case:C6, judge:J1, counsel:OC7 have different complete tag combinations. They need not land in one judge-wide consolidation group simply because both include judge:J1. The documented per_tag option instead runs a pass for each individual tag; custom scopes let an application choose other combinations. What changed, and what each configuration is for
Muddana’s fix was to supply three explicit scopes on each retained memory: one for its judge, one for opposing counsel, and one for the case. This lets the same hearing contribute to distinct views instead of forcing every question through one all-tags grouping.

The practical choice is about the question a summary should answer. If the agent needs to connect hearings for one judge across cases and opposing counsel, create a scope that groups by judge. If it needs a matter-specific account, retain a case scope too. These scopes produce different synthesized views; they do not change the underlying hearing records or establish that a conclusion drawn from them is correct.

In Muddana’s design, consolidation produces observations: synthesized knowledge drawn from stored memories. Mental models are query-defined summaries that the answering agent can consult. The case study describes models for each judge and opposing counsel, as well as models for commitments and the lawyer’s own patterns.

Hindsight’s operations reference says refreshing a mental model reruns its source_query, summarizes the selected memories, and updates the model. Refresh can be manual or automatic when configured. In other words, scopes determine which evidence can be synthesized together; the mental-model query determines which selected memories are summarized for later use. A model is a prepared summary, not independent evidence that a pattern is sound. See Hindsight’s operations reference.
What the reported examples do—and do not—show
The case study gives examples of how the author’s practice records could answer a question such as, “What does Murthy sir do when the other side keeps asking for time?” Muddana reports that a Greenfield hearing on 22 June 2026 involved a rejected third adjournment request and cross-examination being closed as nil, with Rs 3,000 in costs. The article also reports a Seabreeze specific-performance hearing on 9 July 2025 where the judge refused 14 documents tendered without an index and imposed Rs 2,000 in costs. A separate memo was reportedly rejected on 11 March 2026 for lack of prior service; the article gives no amount for that event.

These are details reported by the author from sample practice records, not independently authenticated court outcomes. They describe particular events, not a population-level tendency or a reliable forecast of a future ruling. Muddana also notes that a judge model based on three hearings is thin. A system should present the record citations behind a synthesized statement and describe past behavior with appropriate uncertainty, rather than turn a small set of examples into a prediction.

Implementation checks for a Hindsight-backed agent
- Choose scopes from the questions. Decide whether the agent needs judge-, counsel-, case-, or other views before selecting the tag combinations.
- Provide the scopes on retained memories. A shared tag alone does not override the documented
combineddefault. - Keep retrieval and synthesis distinct. Filtering for records with a tag is not the same as consolidating those records into an observation.
- Configure model refresh deliberately. Set the relevant
source_queryand decide whether refresh is manual or automatic. - Preserve traceability. Show the source hearing records behind each synthesized claim, and make uncertainty visible.
- Describe rather than predict. Treat small or uneven samples as historical context, not as a dependable rule about how a judge will decide.
