Higher oil prices do not produce one uniform stock-market result. They usually raise fuel costs for airlines and many ship operators, while potentially increasing revenue for oil producers. The actual share-price reaction depends on the fuel benchmark that matters, hedging, contract terms, pass-through to customers, utilization, balance-sheet strength, business mix, and what investors already expected. Crude oil is also only an input: jet fuel, marine bunker fuel, gasoline and diesel can move by different amounts when refineries or product supplies are constrained.

Start with the transmission chain: crude is not the fuel bill

An oil-price headline normally refers to a crude benchmark such as Brent. Airlines buy refined jet fuel, and ships buy marine fuels commonly called bunker. The price paid by each operator reflects crude, refining capacity, transportation, inventories, regional supply and demand, taxes and other market factors. A rise in Brent can therefore understate or overstate the increase in a carrier’s actual fuel bill.

The distinction became especially important in the second quarter of 2026. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that Brent traded as high as $118 per barrel and as low as $72 during that quarter. It also reported that average gasoline crack spreads were 60% higher year over year, while distillate and jet-fuel crack spreads more than doubled year over year as international product supplies tightened. A crack spread is the difference between the price of a refined product and the crude used to make it. When that spread widens, refined fuel can become much more expensive even if crude has not risen by the same percentage.

That is why an investor should trace four separate steps rather than assume “oil up means transport stocks down”:

Airline stocks: direct fuel exposure, moderated by hedges and pricing power

Why jet fuel matters to airline earnings

Jet fuel is a direct operating expense. When the price rises, an airline’s cost per available seat or per flight generally rises unless it has hedged the purchase, uses a more efficient fleet, reduces flying or recovers the increase through fares and ancillary revenue. Those responses take time and may be limited by competition and passenger demand.

In its June 2026 outlook, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projected an average Brent price of $95 per barrel and average jet fuel of $152 per barrel for 2026. IATA projected industry fuel costs rising from $252 billion in 2025 to $350 billion in 2026, with fuel representing 31.4% of total airline operating expenses in 2026 versus 25.4% in 2025. These are dated industry forecasts, not realized full-year results. IATA also projected a $23.0 billion industry net profit and a 2.0% net margin in 2026, compared with $45 billion and 4.2% in 2025. The organization attributed the deterioration to Middle East disruptions, high fuel prices and other macroeconomic pressures, so the change cannot be assigned to crude alone.

Measure Figure How to interpret it
IATA average Brent projection for 2026 $95 per barrel Industry forecast published June 2026
IATA average jet-fuel projection for 2026 $152 per barrel Industry forecast; refined fuel, not crude
IATA projected airline fuel cost $252 billion in 2025; $350 billion in 2026 Industry forecasts
Fuel share of airline operating expense 25.4% in 2025; 31.4% in 2026 IATA industry forecast
IATA projected net profit and margin $23.0 billion and 2.0% in 2026; $45 billion and 4.2% in 2025 Industry forecasts, affected by several macro factors

Hedging changes timing, not the underlying risk

Airlines use instruments such as fuel swaps, options or fixed-price contracts to protect part of expected consumption. IATA said airlines globally had hedged roughly one third of expected 2026 fuel use. The unhedged portion remains exposed to market prices, while hedges eventually expire and can create gains or losses relative to spot prices. A hedge tied to crude can also leave “basis risk” if jet fuel rises faster than crude because refinery margins widen.

Hedging can make two airlines with similar routes report very different fuel costs in the same quarter. A carrier with older, low-cost hedges may look insulated until those contracts roll off; another may have a higher current cost because it bought protection at an unfavorable level but less exposure later. Compare the volume covered, instrument, strike or fixed price, expiration schedule and benchmark—not merely a single quarter’s fuel expense.

Fares and ancillary revenue may recover only part of the increase

Airlines can attempt to raise fares, add fuel-related fees, increase baggage or seat charges, alter schedules, or shift capacity toward routes with stronger demand. Recovery is not automatic. Competitors may refuse matching increases, and passengers may reduce discretionary travel. A surcharge collected months after a fuel spike does not protect the quarter in which the expense was incurred.

A company-specific example illustrates why no universal multiplier should be used. In a July 15, 2026 investor update, United Airlines assumed an all-in average fuel price of about $3.69 per gallon for the third quarter, based on the Gulf Coast jet forward curve on July 14. The company said fuel costs for that quarter had increased $575 million, or $1.12 in adjusted diluted earnings per share, since the beginning of July. That is a forward-looking sensitivity for one carrier, one quarter and one curve date—not a rule that every airline loses $1.12 of earnings per share for a comparable move.

What to compare between airlines

  • Fuel-cost share and definition: Check the period, whether the figure includes hedging gains or losses, and whether it is measured against operating expense, capacity or revenue.
  • Hedge profile: Note covered volume, benchmark, average price, option structure and expiration dates.
  • Fleet efficiency: Newer aircraft can consume less fuel per seat, but fleet replacement requires capital and may increase debt.
  • Network and route mix: Long-haul flying, cargo exposure and regions with constrained refined-product supply create different sensitivities.
  • Pricing power: Look for evidence that fares and ancillary revenue have followed costs without damaging load factors.
  • Balance sheet: High leverage can magnify the effect of a temporary margin squeeze.

Shipping stocks: bunker costs and charter contracts determine the exposure

Fuel consumption is only one part of a ship operator’s margin

Ships burn marine fuels, often grouped under the term bunker. A higher bunker price raises voyage expense directly when the owner or operator pays for fuel. The effect also depends on vessel size, speed, route length, port delays, weather, procurement location, vessel efficiency and utilization. Slow steaming can reduce fuel burn but lengthens transit times and may require more ships to maintain service frequency.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services reported that bunker and energy expenses were 25.7% of operating expenses and cost of services in 2025. The company linked historical bunker volatility to crude prices and warned that future increases might not be passed to customers fully or promptly. The 25.7% figure is ZIM’s 2025 company measure; it is not a standard percentage for all shipping businesses.

Who pays depends on the charter structure

Contract language can move fuel exposure from an owner’s income statement to a customer’s. The cited shipping company’s 2025 annual report says voyage expenses are borne by the company for spot charters, while voyage expenses under time-charter and bareboat arrangements are generally borne by the charterer.

Arrangement Party generally bearing voyage expenses in the cited filing Investor implication
Spot charter Shipping company Higher bunker prices can directly pressure the operator’s voyage margin.
Time charter Charterer The owner’s direct bunker exposure is reduced while the contract is in force.
Bareboat charter Charterer The charterer generally operates the vessel and bears voyage expenses.

“Generally” matters: individual contracts, fuel clauses and related services can differ. Read the company’s definition of voyage expense and charter obligations before applying the table to a specific fleet.

Surcharges help only if customers accept them

Container lines and other operators may add bunker adjustment factors or fuel surcharges. Recovery depends on the trade lane, contract duration, competitive capacity, billing lag and customer bargaining power. ZIM describes surcharges, procurement and operational measures, but expressly cautions that there is no assurance it can pass future bunker increases on in full or on time. A surcharge announcement therefore is not the same as cash recovery or a protected margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shipping stocks also respond to freight rates, vessel supply, utilization and trade volumes. A tanker can benefit from stronger freight rates even while paying more for fuel; a container carrier can face weak demand and excess capacity that prevent surcharge recovery. For crude tankers, a high oil price does not automatically imply a high tanker rate because freight depends on cargo flows, ton-mile demand, fleet availability and sanctions or route changes.

Questions to ask about a shipping company

  • What proportion of the fleet operates in spot, time-charter or bareboat arrangements?
  • Does the company disclose bunker consumption, fuel hedges or a bunker adjustment mechanism?
  • Are fuel surcharges automatic, negotiated, capped or delayed?
  • How do utilization, vessel age, speed and port congestion affect consumption per voyage?
  • What happens to debt service and liquidity if freight rates weaken while bunker costs rise?

Energy stocks are several different businesses, not one trade

Upstream producers

Exploration and production companies sell crude, natural gas or other hydrocarbons. A higher realized crude price can increase revenue and operating cash flow, subject to production volumes, quality differentials, royalties, taxes, operating costs and hedges. A producer that has hedged much of its output may capture less of a price increase in the near term. Higher prices can also raise service costs and encourage additional drilling, which may eventually affect supply.

The cause and expected duration of the increase matter. A sustained rise supported by demand can improve producer economics; a short disruption may lift prices but leave volumes, logistics or refining access impaired. Valuation also matters: a stock priced for high future prices may fall if the increase is smaller or shorter than investors expected.

Refiners and integrated companies

Refiners buy crude and sell gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products. Their key operating variable is the margin between input crude and output products, often expressed through crack spreads, not the direction of crude by itself. Crude rising faster than product prices can compress margins; product prices rising faster can expand them.

The EIA’s Q2 2026 observations show why this distinction matters: gasoline crack spreads rose 60% year over year, while distillate and jet-fuel crack spreads more than doubled amid tight international supply. Refiners may also adjust yields among products in the short run, but their ability to do so is constrained by refinery configuration, maintenance, regulations and feedstock quality.

Integrated companies combine production, refining, transportation, chemicals or marketing. A higher crude price can help the production division while hurting a refining or fuel-marketing division if product spreads do not keep pace. The net effect requires segment-level analysis.

Oilfield-service companies

Oilfield-service revenue depends on customer spending, drilling activity, completion work and equipment utilization. Producers usually set budgets using expected prices and cash-flow targets, so service demand can respond with a lag. A temporary price spike caused by a disruption may not produce the same spending response as a durable increase. Current company filings are needed to quantify exposure for any particular service provider.

Why a stock can move opposite to its operating exposure

Operating earnings and share-price performance are related but not interchangeable. Investors price expected future cash flows, not just the next fuel invoice. A transport stock can rise after an oil-price increase if the market had expected an even worse spike, if fares are stronger, or if supply capacity tightens. An energy stock can fall despite higher crude if the move was already reflected in valuation, production declines, taxes increase, hedges limit gains, or investors expect demand destruction.

Balance sheet and financing conditions add another layer. A heavily indebted airline may experience a larger equity impact from a modest margin change than a carrier with substantial liquidity. A producer with fixed-rate debt and low lifting costs may be more resilient than a high-cost producer whose lenders require spending. The same percentage change in fuel expense therefore produces different changes in equity value.

Do not treat a historical correlation as a causal rule. No dependable universal statistic says that a given percentage increase in oil produces a fixed percentage move in airline, shipping or energy shares. The relationship changes with the source of the oil move, product spreads, demand, capacity, hedges and valuation.

Use a two-scenario framework: demand shock versus supply disruption

Demand-driven oil increase

If crude rises because global activity and fuel demand are strengthening, airlines may benefit from fuller aircraft and better fares, shipping companies may see stronger cargo or freight demand, and producers may sell more at higher prices. Fuel costs still rise, but revenue and utilization can offset part of the pressure. The outcome depends on whether capacity expands as quickly as demand.

Supply- or disruption-driven oil increase

If conflict, sanctions, outages or refinery constraints cause the increase, fuel-consuming companies can face higher costs while passenger, cargo or industrial demand weakens. Jet-fuel or bunker prices may rise more than crude, and surcharges may arrive too slowly. Producers may benefit from the price but face transport restrictions, higher insurance, lost volumes or political intervention. The same Brent move can therefore produce opposite results from a demand-led move.

A practical checklist for analyzing any stock

  1. Identify the relevant price: Use the company’s jet-fuel, bunker, crude, product or regional benchmark rather than a generic oil headline.
  2. Measure exposure: Find fuel or feedstock expense, its share of operating costs and the reporting period.
  3. Read the hedge note: Record instrument, volume, price, benchmark, maturity and basis mismatch.
  4. Map pass-through: Determine whether fares, ancillary charges, bunker surcharges or customer contracts recover costs, and how quickly.
  5. Check operating drivers: Review utilization, fleet or asset efficiency, freight rates, production volumes, refinery yields and capacity.
  6. Stress the balance sheet: Consider debt, liquidity, covenants and capital spending if margins remain compressed.
  7. Separate business segments: For energy companies, analyze upstream, refining, marketing and services independently before combining them.
  8. Compare with expectations: Ask what oil price, margins and demand are already embedded in the valuation.
  9. Test both scenarios: Model a demand-led increase and a disruption-led increase rather than one generic oil-up case.

How to read the dated evidence correctly

IATA’s 2026 numbers are projections published in June during unusually volatile geopolitical and fuel-market conditions. United’s $3.69-per-gallon assumption and $575 million cost change are a forward-looking, carrier-specific July 2026 update. ZIM’s 25.7% bunker-and-energy share is a 2025 company disclosure and may use a different cost definition from another ship operator. The EIA’s $118 high, $72 low and crack-spread changes describe Q2 2026, not a perpetual price relationship.

These figures are useful anchors for understanding transmission channels, but none is a stock-return forecast. A current investment decision requires the latest company filing, hedge schedule, contract terms, operating data and valuation.

Bottom line

Higher oil prices usually create an immediate cost challenge for airlines and for ship operators that pay bunker expenses, while potentially improving upstream producers’ realized prices. Refiners, integrated energy companies and service businesses require separate analysis because their margins depend on product spreads, segment mix and customer spending. The most reliable approach is to follow the actual fuel or product price, quantify who bears it, check the timing of hedges and pass-through, then test demand, disruption and valuation scenarios before drawing a conclusion about any stock.
