A microscopic information engine can extract useful work from environmental memory when it measures the system twice and uses the delayed information in feedback. In an experiment reported by Lokesh Muruga, Felix Ginot, Sarah A. M. Loos and Clemens Bechinger in Nature Physics on 16 October 2026, an optically trapped Brownian particle in a viscoelastic fluid produced more work in one measured state than the optimum expected from an equivalent memoryless bath. The result shows that hidden environmental degrees of freedom can act as a thermodynamic resource, but it does not represent unrestricted energy generation or a household power source.

What the experiment demonstrated

The system was a single Brownian particle held in an optical trap and immersed in a viscoelastic fluid. Unlike an ideal memoryless environment, a viscoelastic bath retains correlations from earlier interactions. Those correlations are stored in environmental variables that are not directly observed in the particle’s position. The resulting particle dynamics are non-Markovian: its future behavior depends partly on its history.

Muruga, Ginot, Loos and Bechinger showed that a feedback-controlled information engine can access part of that history and convert it into extracted work. Their protocol is intentionally minimal: two consecutive binary measurements of the observable particle, separated by a controlled delay, provide the information needed to detect a return of information from the hidden bath variables.

The authors report that, in one measured state, the maximum extracted work exceeded the optimum for the corresponding Markovian system. That excess identifies a contribution from energy stored in hidden environmental degrees of freedom rather than from the particle’s directly observed state alone.

Why hidden degrees of freedom matter

Markovian and non-Markovian environments

Question Markovian operation Non-Markovian operation in this experiment
What happens to environmental information? It is effectively lost from the system’s future description after the relevant state is specified. Hidden environmental variables retain correlations with earlier system–bath interactions.
Can information return to the observable particle? No useful information backflow is expected. Information can flow back from hidden bath degrees of freedom after a delay.
Is one measurement enough? A single measurement can characterize the available state information for the protocol. No. A single particle measurement cannot harvest the useful bath memory; the experiment uses two delayed binary measurements.
Can extracted work beat the memoryless benchmark? The output is bounded by the optimum for the corresponding Markovian engine. In one measured state, the observed maximum exceeded that Markovian optimum.

“Hidden” does not mean information is destroyed. It means the relevant variables are not included in the particle’s directly measured state. In a memory-bearing bath, those variables can preserve correlations and later influence the particle again. That return is called information backflow.

How the delayed-measurement engine works

  1. Trap and equilibrate the particle. The particle is held in an optical potential while interacting with the viscoelastic bath under controlled, isothermal conditions.
  2. Take the first binary measurement. The particle’s observable state is reduced to one of two measurement outcomes. This first result records the immediately available information but cannot, by itself, reveal the hidden bath memory.
  3. Wait for a controlled delay. During the delay, correlations evolve inside the bath. Some information that moved from the particle into hidden environmental variables can flow back toward the observable coordinate.
  4. Take the second binary measurement. The second result is compared with the first. Their joint statistics contain information about memory and backflow that is absent from a single instantaneous observation.
  5. Apply feedback. The engine changes the particle’s potential according to the measured pair, allowing it to extract work from the controlled relaxation of the system.
  6. Evaluate the work against a benchmark. The measured output is compared with the optimum predicted for a corresponding Markovian environment. An excess over that benchmark indicates that environmental memory contributed to the available work.

The two measurements are therefore not redundant samples. Their separation is the mechanism that makes delayed environmental information usable. The protocol turns a time correlation into a feedback signal.

What “information backflow” means thermodynamically

In an information engine, measurement outcomes can guide a feedback operation that extracts work. The usable amount depends on the information available about the system and its correlations with other degrees of freedom. In a memoryless model, information that leaves the observed coordinate is treated as unavailable. In the viscoelastic experiment, hidden bath variables retain part of that information and later return some of it to the observed particle.

That return does not create energy from nothing. It makes previously stored nonequilibrium free energy and correlations accessible to the feedback protocol. The authors discuss a total excess-free-energy bound: additional measurements, finer spatial resolution or more flexible potential-control strategies could increase the accessible work, but only up to the free energy stored in the non-Markovian environment and the protocol’s other thermodynamic limits.

What the measurements show—and what they do not

Evidence reported in the paper

  • The experiment directly demonstrates work extraction from environmental memory in a viscoelastic bath.
  • The maximum extracted work in one measured state is higher than the optimum for the corresponding Markovian system.
  • The Figure 4 averages were obtained from approximately 100 extraction protocols; shaded regions represent standard errors of the mean obtained by bootstrapping.
  • The authors identify information backflow as an experimentally accessible resource for improving information engines in time-correlated environments.

Limits of the claim

  • The result concerns a microscopic Brownian-particle system, not macroscopic power generation.
  • The engine operates through controlled measurements and feedback under isothermal conditions.
  • It does not justify claims of unrestricted energy from information or a device that can supply household electricity.
  • The supplied report does not state a single universal numerical work value for all states; the comparison is specifically that one measured state exceeds its Markovian optimum.

Why two measurements are the minimal useful protocol

A first measurement can reveal the particle’s current coarse-grained state, but it cannot distinguish ordinary thermal fluctuations from a later return of information stored in the bath. The second measurement, taken after a chosen delay, supplies the time-separated correlation needed to identify whether the environment is feeding information back.

This design also explains why the result is more than a conventional feedback experiment. The engine does not merely exploit uncertainty in the particle. It uses the environment’s temporal structure as part of the control resource. The delay is an operational probe of memory, and the feedback rule converts the resulting correlation into work.

The demonstrated protocol is deliberately conservative. More than two measurements could provide a richer estimate of the bath state; higher spatial resolution could preserve more information about the particle; and a more flexible control potential could tailor feedback more closely to the measured history. Each improvement is constrained by the total excess free energy available in the correlated environment, so better measurement does not imply unlimited work.

Why this matters for information engines

Many theoretical treatments simplify a thermal environment as Markovian because memoryless equations are easier to analyze. The experiment shows why that simplification can hide a usable resource. When environmental correlations persist, the best engine may need to measure not only where the system is, but also how its observations are related across time.

The broader conclusion is that non-Markovian dynamics can be explored systematically rather than treated solely as experimental noise. Environmental memory can be characterized, accessed through delayed measurements and incorporated into feedback design, while remaining subject to ordinary thermodynamic bounds.
