A hardware wallet helps protect cryptocurrency by keeping the private keys used to authorize transactions off an internet-connected computer or phone. It does not protect against someone obtaining your recovery phrase, tricking you into approving a transaction, or exploiting a compromised or tampered-with device. Its security depends on the whole process: trustworthy device setup, careful review of transaction details on the device, and a private, secure recovery backup.

What a hardware wallet actually protects

Your cryptocurrency is recorded on its blockchain; a hardware wallet holds or uses the private keys that authorize transactions. When you prepare a transaction on a computer or phone, the wallet sends relevant data to the signing device. The device creates the signature internally, so the connected host should not receive the private key. This can reduce the risk of ordinary malware stealing the key directly. Ledger describes its signing design with a compromised host in mind, but vendor descriptions of a product’s architecture are not a universal guarantee for every device. Ledger’s hardware-wallet explanation

The distinction is important: key isolation helps protect the secret, but it does not prove that the transaction presented to the device is safe or matches what you meant to do. A device that requires physical approval can prevent a host from silently signing on your behalf, but an attacker may still persuade you to approve a harmful request. What it cannot protect against

Recovery phrase theft or loss

Your recovery phrase is a backup credential that can restore access using another compatible wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the same funds without the original device. Generate the phrase through the device’s official setup flow; do not use a device that arrives with a phrase already set up. Keep the phrase private and offline: do not photograph it, enter it on a computer or phone, store it online, or share it. Losing or destroying the only backup can also prevent recovery. Approving a deceptive or misunderstood transaction

A compromised computer or phone can send transaction data different from what you intended. Ledger’s developer documentation warns: “An attacker who controls the host can present a hash of a transaction the user did not intend to authorise.” The documentation was updated September 23, 2026. If you approve the request without understanding it, the device can produce a valid signature for a harmful action. Ledger’s developer security documentation

This risk is especially important for smart-contract interactions, where a prompt may authorize an action or permission rather than a simple transfer. A device display is a useful checkpoint, not proof that every complex action is easy to interpret. If the device does not clearly show what you are authorizing, do not assume that blind approval is safe. Ledger’s clear-signing guidance

Address substitution and clipboard attacks

Malware can replace a copied destination address with a visually similar one. In a 2021 paper, researchers described EthClipper and tested the attack against Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey devices. The paper’s specific setup found that, using off-the-shelf PCs and NAS storage, an attacker could mine a database matching 25% of the digits in an address to achieve a 50% chance of finding a fitting fake address. This describes the paper’s attack setup, not the prevalence of wallet compromise or a general theft rate. The EthClipper paper

The signing device may display the substituted address and ask you to confirm it, but that safeguard only helps if you check the destination carefully. A few matching characters or a quick glance are not a reliable check.

Physical, firmware, and supply-chain attacks

A device can be lost, stolen, tampered with, or affected by a hardware or firmware vulnerability. Trezor lists vulnerability categories that include seed extraction or injection, PIN bypass, bypassing user confirmation, private-key extraction, and physical and supply-chain attacks. A category in a vendor’s security material does not mean every model is affected; check current advisories for the specific device you use. Trezor’s security information

Phishing and social engineering

An attacker may impersonate a trusted service or person to persuade you to disclose your recovery phrase or approve an operation. A signing device cannot tell whether your approval was informed or obtained through deception. Trezor identifies phishing and social engineering as risks to wallet backups. How to use a hardware wallet more safely

  1. Set it up yourself. Create the recovery phrase through the device’s official setup flow. Do not accept a device that arrives preconfigured with a phrase. Ledger’s recovery-phrase guidance
  2. Keep the recovery phrase offline and private. Do not photograph it, send it by chat or email, store it in cloud storage, or type it into a website, computer, or phone. Any additional copy is another credential to protect. Ledger’s recovery-phrase guidance
  3. Review the request on the device before approving. For a transfer, check the destination address and amount on the device’s display. For a smart-contract action, understand the permission or operation being signed. Stop if the device does not make the action clear. Ledger’s developer security documentation Ledger’s clear-signing guidance
  4. Treat the connected software and clipboard as potentially hostile. Do not assume an address shown on a computer or phone is authoritative; malware may alter it before it reaches the signing device. The EthClipper paper
  5. Protect both the device and its backup. Account for theft, loss, damage, and unauthorized access. A more durable backup format may help with physical damage, but every copy of the recovery phrase must remain private. Ledger’s recovery-phrase guidance
  6. Keep wallet software and firmware current. Follow update instructions from the device maker’s official channel. Trezor includes firmware updates in its device-security guidance. Trezor’s security information

What to look for when evaluating a device

There is no universal guarantee that a device’s display or signing design will make every transaction safe to approve. Evaluate the security workflow, not just the fact that the device is physically separate from your computer.

  • Key isolation: Understand where keys are generated and used, and whether signing remains on the device. Vendor descriptions should be treated as claims about that vendor’s design, not proof about all hardware wallets. Ledger’s developer security documentation
  • Transaction review: Check what the device displays for addresses, amounts, fees, and contract actions, and whether it warns about or prevents blind signing. The usefulness of on-device review depends on what is shown and whether you can interpret it. Ledger’s clear-signing guidance
  • Recovery process: Consider how the phrase is created, protected, and restored on compatible devices. A backup improves recoverability only if it remains secure and available. Ledger’s recovery-phrase guidance
  • Physical and firmware security: Review the maker’s current advisories, update process, PIN protections, and disclosed vulnerability information for the particular model. Trezor’s security information
  • Usability under real conditions: A safeguard that is hard to use consistently may not protect you in practice. The EthClipper study illustrates why address confirmation can fail when users do not fully verify what they see. The EthClipper paper
