Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Managing a small server is moderately difficult for a beginner. Installing Linux and making an initial SSH connection are approachable tasks. Keeping a server dependable is harder because you must continuously handle users, permissions, updates, services, networking, security, logs, monitoring, backups, and recovery. A private home-lab server running one low-risk service can be an excellent learning project; an internet-facing production server with customer data or uptime commitments requires much stronger administration skills.
What makes server management difficult?
A server is not difficult because every command is obscure. It is difficult because several systems interact, and a mistake in one can affect availability, security or data. Canonical’s Ubuntu Server study outline treats services, automated backup and restore, process management, networking, storage, security, monitoring, databases and web servers as core subjects. Ubuntu’s how-to documentation also warns that deeper procedures require you to understand the situation and adapt the instructions rather than copy commands blindly.
You are responsible for both normal operation and failure handling. That means knowing what should be running, who may access it, which ports are exposed, how software is patched, where logs are stored, how backups are restored and what to do when a process, disk or network connection fails.
There is no reliable universal number of hours or a beginner success-rate statistic. Difficulty depends on your Linux and networking background, the workload, internet exposure, data sensitivity and uptime expectations.

How difficulty changes with the type of server
| Setup | Relative challenge | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Local virtual machine for experiments | Lowest | Mistakes are isolated, the machine can be reverted or deleted, and it need not be reachable from the internet. |
| Disposable VPS running one personal service | Moderate | You practice real remote access, patching, firewall rules, logs and backups while limiting the consequences of failure. |
| Public website or development service | Moderate to high | Internet exposure adds attack attempts, DNS and TLS configuration, monitoring and faster response to outages. |
| Database, mail server or several services | High | Stateful data, authentication, storage growth, inter-service dependencies and more complex recovery procedures are involved. |
| Production system with multiple users, compliance or uptime requirements | High to very high | You need documented controls, tested recovery, monitoring, change management and dependable maintenance. |
A managed service or graphical control panel can reduce routine work, but it also hides details and limits what you learn. A self-managed operating system gives more control and practice, while making you responsible for configuration and security.
What a beginner should learn first
Linux fundamentals
- Navigate the filesystem and identify important paths such as configuration, logs and user home directories.
- Use a shell safely: understand command output, quoting, redirection, pipes and exit status.
- Read manual pages and distribution documentation instead of treating snippets as universal.
- Inspect running processes, resource use and disk capacity.
Users, groups and permissions
Learn how ownership and read, write and execute permissions work. Use a named account with narrowly appropriate sudo access instead of performing routine work as root. Separate service accounts from personal accounts and avoid making files or directories world-writable merely to fix an access error.

Networking
Understand IP addresses, DNS, ports, listening sockets, routing and the difference between local and internet-facing access. A service that works on the server may still be unreachable because it is bound to the wrong address or blocked by a firewall.
Security controls
Security is a maintenance activity, not a one-time installation step. Ubuntu identifies user and group management, firewalls and AppArmor as core controls. NIST SP 800-123, published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 2008 and updated in 2021, describes server security as controls that must be selected, implemented and maintained.
A safe beginner path
- Define one low-risk purpose. Choose a file-sharing experiment, test website or development service. Avoid starting with mail, sensitive personal data or a service that others depend on.
- Use a disposable environment. Start with a local virtual machine or a low-cost, throwaway VPS. DigitalOcean’s administration guidance recommends a clean new server and presents examples applicable to current Ubuntu or Debian systems, from a laptop-hosted machine to a remote cloud server.
- Record the baseline. Write down the operating-system release, hostname, IP address, provider access method, installed applications and how you will regain access if SSH fails.
- Create named administrative access. Add a non-root user, grant the required
sudopermission and test it in a second session before closing the original administrative connection. - Configure SSH keys. Use key-based authentication for the administrative account. Confirm the key works before disabling password-based root login. Keep a tested recovery path; a locked-out server is an availability problem.
- Restrict the firewall. Allow only the ports required for administration and the service you intentionally publish. Restrict SSH to trusted source addresses when practical. DigitalOcean recommends SSH-key authentication for a non-root sudo user, disabling password-based root login and using a cloud firewall for a new server.
- Patch before installing more software. Apply available operating-system updates, reboot when required, and learn how to verify the running kernel and service status afterward.
- Add one service. Install only what your stated purpose needs. Record configuration changes, listening ports, dependencies and secrets. Do not place passwords or tokens in shell history or public configuration files.
- Practice diagnosis. Check service status, recent logs, running processes, memory, CPU, disk space and listening sockets. Deliberately stop the test service and bring it back so the recovery steps are familiar.
- Build and test backups. Define what is included, how often it is copied, where copies are stored and exactly how restoration works. Perform a restoration drill before trusting the server with important data.
- Add monitoring before exposure. Monitor reachability, disk capacity, memory or CPU pressure, service health and backup success. Decide how you will be alerted and who responds.
Backups and recovery are where beginners often misjudge the work
Enabling a backup job is not the same as having a recovery plan. Ubuntu’s backup guidance says a plan must specify the data covered, schedule, storage location and restoration method, and recommends off-site copies for disaster scenarios. A provider snapshot can help you roll back a machine, but it should not be your only independently tested copy.

Risks of running a server as a beginner
Lockout
Changing SSH or firewall rules can remove your own access. Keep an existing session open while testing changes, use a second login, and know whether your provider offers a console or recovery mode.
Unpatched vulnerabilities
Internet-facing services are scanned continuously. Delay in applying security updates, exposing unnecessary ports or installing abandoned software increases the attack surface.
Privilege mistakes
Running everything as root or granting broad sudo access turns a small command error into a system-wide change. Use least privilege and verify commands that delete, overwrite or recursively change permissions.

Data loss
Disk failure, accidental deletion, ransomware or a faulty update can make a server unavailable. Recovery depends on usable, recent and separate backups, not on confidence that a backup process ran once.

Silent failure
A service can stop while the machine itself remains online. Logs and health checks are needed to detect failures before users report them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When can you move from a lab to public use?
Move only when you can explain, without guesswork, how you will patch the operating system, restrict access, identify a failed service, restore data and regain access after a configuration error. Before publishing a service, verify that only intended ports are reachable, administrative access uses keys, backups have been restored successfully and monitoring produces a useful alert.

Public exposure also changes the risk calculation. A private VM mainly threatens your own lab; a public VPS can be attacked, abused to send traffic, or used to reach other systems if compromised. Databases, mail, multiple users, regulated information and uptime commitments should be treated as a later stage—or delegated to specialists—until you have operational experience.
Can you run a VPS without being a sysadmin?
You can operate a small VPS without holding a sysadmin job title, but you cannot avoid sysadmin responsibilities. DigitalOcean states that once a VPS is delivered, the customer is responsible for configuration, security and making software function correctly. A managed hosting product can take over some operating-system tasks; a self-managed VPS requires you to perform them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical threshold is not memorizing every command. It is having a repeatable process: least-privilege access, limited exposure, timely patching, observable services, tested backups and a documented recovery path. Start with a disposable system, expand scope only after each layer works, and keep important workloads off the server until your restoration drill succeeds.
