Short answer: A Gunicorn socket file is a Unix-domain socket that a local reverse proxy such as nginx uses to reach Gunicorn. For a systemd-managed service, store it under /run, use one exact path everywhere, and set ownership and mode so the proxy account can open it.
What a Gunicorn socket file is
Gunicorn can listen on a Unix-domain socket instead of a TCP address. You select that endpoint with --bind unix:PATH (or -b unix:PATH). The resulting socket appears as a filesystem-named entry, but it is not an ordinary file containing application data. It is an operating-system communication endpoint that accepts connections from local processes.

A reverse proxy connects to that endpoint and forwards HTTP requests to your application. With nginx, the proxy connection stays on the same machine and does not require Gunicorn to listen on a network interface. That limits the proxy hop to local processes that can access the socket and its parent directories. It does not, however, make the application automatically secure: any local process granted access can attempt a connection.
If you omit a bind setting, Gunicorn’s documented default is 127.0.0.1:8000 when no PORT environment variable is defined. That is a TCP listener, not a socket file. A Unix socket is therefore a deployment choice, not a requirement for running Gunicorn.

Where the socket should live
Use /run for a system-managed service
For a service started and supervised by systemd, put the application socket in a runtime directory, normally /run. A common path is:
/run/gunicorn.sock/run is intended for transient state. Its contents are recreated during boot and service startup, so a socket there is not treated as durable application data. Let systemd or the service startup process create the endpoint rather than committing a stale socket into your project repository.
The path itself is not magic. /run/gunicorn.sock, /run/gunicorn/socket, and another absolute path are all valid if the process creating the socket and every client use the same one. The important properties are predictable lifecycle management, controlled ownership, and a parent directory that the proxy can traverse.
Managing a dedicated runtime directory
An older systemd pattern uses a directory below /run instead of a socket directly in the top level:
/run/gunicorn/socketThat arrangement pairs a service’s RuntimeDirectory=gunicorn setting with a tmpfiles.d rule such as:
d /run/gunicorn 0755 someuser somegroup -The rule creates the parent directory with an explicit mode and ownership. This is useful when several runtime files belong together or when you want the directory’s permissions separated from the socket’s permissions. Replace the example account and group with the identities used by your deployment; do not copy those placeholders literally.

When a project-directory path is acceptable
A socket inside an application directory can work, but it creates more operational responsibility. Deployments must ensure that the directory exists after every release, remove an obsolete socket when appropriate, preserve correct ownership, and grant the proxy search permission on every parent directory. Relative paths are especially error-prone because the resulting location depends on the service’s working directory. If a project-specific location is required, use an absolute path in a service-managed runtime directory and document it in both the Gunicorn and proxy configurations.
How the path is chosen and kept consistent
Gunicorn creates the socket at the path supplied to its bind option, or systemd creates it first when socket activation is used. nginx does not discover that path. It uses the literal path in its configuration. A one-character difference, such as /run/gunicorn.sock versus /run/gunicorn/socket, produces a connection failure even when Gunicorn workers are healthy.
Choose one canonical path and check it in all of these places:
- Gunicorn’s
--bind unix:...argument, if Gunicorn creates the listener. - The systemd socket unit’s
ListenStream=..., if systemd creates it. - nginx’s
proxy_passtarget. - Any service scripts, health checks, deployment hooks, or monitoring rules that test the endpoint.
Do not configure both Gunicorn and systemd to independently create the same socket. With socket activation, systemd owns the listening endpoint and hands it to the service; Gunicorn must be configured to use the socket passed by the service arrangement rather than trying to replace it.

Socket activation moves creation of the listening endpoint into a systemd socket unit. Create /etc/systemd/system/gunicorn.socket with a [Socket] section like this:
[Socket]
ListenStream=/run/gunicorn.sock
SocketUser=www-data
SocketGroup=www-data
SocketMode=0660The documented deployment pattern uses www-data, but distributions and web-server packages may use another account. Set the user and group to the identities that actually run your proxy and service. The mode 0660 grants read/write access to the owner and group while denying access to everyone else.

Make the Gunicorn service require the socket unit, then enable and start the socket:
systemctl enable --now gunicorn.socketSocket activation allows systemd to listen immediately and start Gunicorn when a connection arrives. Gunicorn’s deployment documentation describes the capability this way: “systemd can create a UNIX socket and launch Gunicorn on demand.” It also centralizes boot ordering, restart behavior, and runtime-directory creation.
If you change ListenStream, reload systemd’s unit definitions, restart the socket unit, and update nginx to the same path. A running old socket unit can leave you debugging a path that is no longer present in the files you edited.
Socket ownership, modes, and directory traversal
Socket mode
The socket’s owner, group, and mode determine which local processes can open it. The systemd example uses 0660, which is appropriate when the proxy and service are coordinated through a shared group. A more restrictive 0600 mode is an option when only one user should connect. That setting blocks a separate nginx account unless nginx runs as the socket owner.
Do not solve a permission error by making the socket world-writable. Grant the proxy only the access it needs, preferably through a dedicated group, and verify that the service recreates the same ownership and mode after a reboot or restart.
Parent-directory permissions
Socket permissions are only one part of access control. The nginx user must also be able to search (execute) every parent directory. For example, access to /run/gunicorn/socket requires traversal permission on both /run/gunicorn and the path leading to it. A socket can show a seemingly correct 0660 mode while nginx still receives “permission denied” because the directory is inaccessible.

Choosing the account and group
Debian commonly uses www-data for web services, while other systems may use a different nginx or service account. Inspect the actual worker identity on your host and set SocketUser and SocketGroup deliberately. Avoid assuming that a username from one distribution exists on another.
Connecting nginx to the socket
Point nginx at exactly the same path that systemd or Gunicorn creates. The documented deployment form is:

}Keep the Unix-socket form in the proxy_pass value; replacing it with a TCP URL changes the endpoint nginx will contact. If you use the directory-style path, both configurations must instead name /run/gunicorn/socket.
After changing nginx configuration, validate it with your distribution’s nginx configuration test command before reloading the service. Then inspect the socket path and test connectivity as the same account nginx uses. A successful Gunicorn process by itself does not prove that nginx can traverse the directory or open the socket.

1. Confirm that a listener exists
Check the status of the socket unit and the Gunicorn service. A missing endpoint can mean the socket unit is not enabled, the parent directory was never created, or Gunicorn exited before binding. If systemd owns the listener, start with the socket unit; if Gunicorn owns it directly, inspect the service logs for bind errors.
2. Compare every configured path
Read the effective service command, the ListenStream value, and nginx’s proxy_pass. Look for differences in directory names, spelling, and whether one setting uses a relative path. The path must match character for character.

3. Inspect the file and its parents
Check the socket’s owner, group, and mode, then inspect each parent directory. Confirm that the nginx account can search the directories and that its group membership matches the socket’s group when using 0660.
4. Test as the proxy account
The official deployment guide shows this direct connectivity check:

sudo -u www-data curl --unix-socket /run/gunicorn.sock httpRun the equivalent command with your actual proxy account and socket path. If this test fails, fix the socket, directory, or service before investigating nginx routing. If it succeeds but nginx fails, inspect nginx’s effective configuration and error log for a different path, account, or protocol setting.
5. Check lifecycle and stale endpoints
A socket under /run should be recreated after boot. If the file is absent after a restart, verify that the socket unit is enabled and that its parent directory is created. If a project-directory socket remains after a crash, remove the stale endpoint only after stopping the owning service and confirming that no active process is using it; then fix the startup cleanup or runtime-directory design that allowed the stale file to persist.
Application socket versus Gunicorn control socket
The application socket is the endpoint nginx uses for HTTP requests. Gunicorn’s control interface is separate and is used by gunicornc for runtime management, such as inspecting workers or requesting a graceful action.
The control socket defaults to $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/gunicorn.ctl. If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not set, the fallback is $HOME/.gunicorn/gunicorn.ctl. Do not point nginx at this file, and do not apply application-socket assumptions to it. Its permissions should be limited to the administrators or service account that need management access.

Choose a Unix socket when the proxy and Gunicorn are on the same host and you want filesystem permissions plus systemd-managed runtime state. A TCP bind is often simpler for a separate host or a topology that already depends on network addresses. The choice should follow deployment boundaries, not an assumed performance advantage; the cited Gunicorn documentation publishes no numerical performance comparison for these options.
A practical deployment checklist
- Choose one absolute runtime path, preferably below
/runfor a system service. - Decide whether Gunicorn or systemd owns creation of the listener; do not have both compete for it.
- Set the socket owner, group, and mode explicitly. Use
0660for a controlled shared group or0600for one-user access. - Ensure every parent directory exists and is searchable by the nginx account.
- Use the identical path in
--bind,ListenStream, nginx, and health checks. - Enable the socket unit with
systemctl enable --now gunicorn.socketwhen using socket activation. - Test the endpoint as the proxy user with
curl --unix-socketbefore relying on nginx. - Keep the application socket and the
gunicornccontrol socket separate, with separate permissions.
Bottom line for most deployments
Use /run/gunicorn.sock (or a deliberately managed subdirectory below /run) for a systemd deployment, assign ownership to the proxy-access group, and start the socket through systemd. Configure nginx with that exact path and verify access as the nginx user. Most “missing socket” incidents are path mismatches, missing runtime directories, failed startup before binding, or permissions on the socket or one of its parent directories—not a defect in the application itself.
