In Grand Theft Auto V, the vehicle radio is an in-world broadcast system rather than a silent music playlist. Tap the vehicle-radio control to change stations quickly, or hold it to open the radio wheel and choose a station. The exact key or button depends on your platform and current control mapping.
Stations combine programmed songs with their own identities, genres, DJs, advertisements and spoken links. On PC, Self Radio adds eligible music files from your computer through the game’s User Music folder and an audio scan. Rockstar has also announced a broader radio-and-podcast offering for Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The basic radio controls in GTA V
When you are driving a vehicle in GTA V, the radio control has two core interactions. Rockstar’s official game-help manual summarizes them as: “Hold for Radio Wheel/Tap to Quick Change Station.” Those two actions serve different purposes.
Tap: quick station change
A quick tap moves the radio to another station without opening the full selector. It is useful when you want to skip the current station while keeping your attention on the road. Depending on your settings and the context, repeated taps cycle through available stations.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Hold: open the radio wheel
Holding the vehicle-radio control opens a radial station selector. Each segment represents a station, allowing you to move directly to a genre or named channel instead of cycling through every option. Release the control after highlighting the station you want.
Why there is no single universal key
The manual describes the interaction, not one permanent keyboard or controller binding for every player. PC, PlayStation and Xbox layouts differ, and the control can be remapped. If the documented action does not work with the key or button you expect, open the game’s control settings and identify the action assigned to the vehicle radio. Check whether you are viewing the on-foot or vehicle mapping; the relevant binding appears only in the vehicle controls.
- Use the vehicle control map for the current platform.
- Check custom bindings if you have changed the default layout.
- Test both a brief press and a held press: a tap should change stations, while a hold should display the wheel.
- If the wheel appears but does not select a station, release the control after moving the highlight onto the desired segment.
What the radio wheel is actually selecting
The wheel is not simply a folder of audio files. It selects a fictional broadcast channel with a consistent editorial identity. A station normally has a defined genre or tone, a host or presenter, station branding, advertisements and a programmed sequence of tracks. That combination is why changing stations feels closer to tuning a real car radio than opening a music-player menu.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Each station’s songs are arranged as part of a wider broadcast package. Between tracks, you may hear DJ links, promotional material, fictional commercials or other spoken segments. The game can therefore return to the station’s voice and format even after you have heard several songs, rather than presenting an uninterrupted queue.
Radio is tied to the vehicle
The standard radio plays through the vehicle while you are driving. Leaving the vehicle changes the audio context, so the radio should be understood as part of the car’s soundscape rather than a general music app available in every gameplay situation. The station wheel is consequently a vehicle interface, not a separate pause-menu playlist browser.

- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
Changing stations while driving: a reliable procedure
- Enter a vehicle. The radio selector is available as part of the vehicle controls.
- Confirm the radio is enabled. If no station audio is playing, check the game’s audio settings and vehicle-radio volume before troubleshooting the control.
- Tap the assigned vehicle-radio control to make a quick station change.
- Hold the same control to open the radio wheel when you want to choose a specific station.
- Move the highlight to a station and release the control to confirm it.
- Return to driving. The selected broadcast continues through the vehicle’s audio system.
If your input produces a character action instead of a station change, you are probably using the wrong control context or a remapped binding. Recheck the vehicle section of the controls menu rather than relying on a remembered keyboard or controller layout from another platform.
How Self Radio works on PC
Self Radio is the PC feature for playing eligible local music files in GTA V. Rockstar’s support instructions describe a local-file workflow: put supported files or shortcuts in the game’s User Music location, launch the game, and use the audio settings to scan that folder. It is not documented as a connection to a streaming account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat you need
- A PC installation of GTA V.
- Music files that the game can read, or shortcuts handled through the User Music folder.
- Access to the game’s User Music location in your Windows user folders.
- The ability to open Pause Menu > Settings > Audio.
The support material does not establish one universal list of file extensions in the cited instructions. Use formats accepted by your current PC installation and keep the files or shortcuts in the location the game identifies as User Music.
Set up Self Radio
- Close the game before organizing files. This avoids changing the folder while an audio scan is already in progress.
- Open the User Music folder used by your Windows installation of GTA V.
- Add your eligible music files or shortcuts. Keep the originals available if you are using shortcuts; a broken shortcut cannot be scanned successfully.
- Launch GTA V.
- Open Pause Menu > Settings > Audio.
- Enable Auto-Scan for Music or run a rescan. Rockstar specifically directs players to turn Auto-Scan on or rescan when the station does not update.
- Enter a vehicle and open the radio interface. Select Self Radio from the station list or wheel.
What happens during a scan
The game checks the User Music location and updates the Self Radio station. Newly added files may not appear until a scan has completed. If the station still shows an old collection, repeat the scan from the Audio settings instead of repeatedly changing stations.
Self Radio troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Self Radio is missing or unchanged | Auto-Scan is disabled or the library was not rescanned | Open Settings > Audio, enable Auto-Scan for Music, or run the available rescan. |
| Some tracks do not appear | Files or shortcuts are outside the User Music location, or the game cannot read them | Move or recreate the files or shortcuts in User Music, then scan again. |
| A shortcut points to unavailable media | The target file was moved, renamed or disconnected | Restore the target or replace the shortcut with a valid one and rescan. |
| The station exists but is silent | Vehicle radio or overall game audio is muted | Check vehicle-radio volume and the main Audio settings before changing the library. |
These steps address the configuration Rockstar documents: the folder location and the scan state. They do not turn Self Radio into an online music service, and an external streaming login is not part of the documented setup.

Why GTA radio sounds like a real broadcast
The broadcast effect comes from deliberate programming. Stations have presenters, station-specific speech, adverts and transitions around their tracks. Even when the player is only driving from one objective to another, the audio provides a sense of a continuing world outside the car.
Historical evidence from GTA IV
Rockstar’s PC manual for Grand Theft Auto IV documents three custom-music modes that explain the design particularly clearly:
| Mode | Playback behavior | Can you skip? | Broadcast elements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sequential | Plays files in their listed order | Yes | Not stated in the manual description |
| Shuffle | Chooses files randomly | Yes | Not stated in the manual description |
| Radio | Chooses files randomly | No | Radio adverts and DJ banter between tracks |
The manual’s Radio mode description says tracks play randomly “with radio adverts and DJ banter in between tracks” and cannot be skipped. That is historical documentation from GTA IV, not a claim that every later game exposes identical controls. It does show the series’ central distinction: a radio mode simulates a broadcast, while sequential and shuffle modes behave more like personal playback.
GTA V radio compared with GTA IV custom music and GTA VI’s announced system
The following comparison separates documented features from announcements. “Not stated” means the cited official material does not establish the detail.
| Feature | GTA V | GTA IV PC custom music | GTA VI announcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Station selection | Tap for quick change; hold for the radio wheel | Custom-music modes documented in the PC manual | Not stated beyond the existence of stations and podcasts |
| Platform or edition covered | Vehicle radio; Self Radio is documented for PC | PC manual evidence for custom-music modes | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release announced |
| Local-file support | Self Radio uses the User Music folder and an audio scan on PC | Custom-music modes are documented | Not stated |
| DJ links and adverts | Part of the station-style presentation | Explicitly documented in Radio mode | Not stated for individual modes |
| Track skipping | Depends on the station or custom-radio behavior; no universal rule is given in the cited GTA V material | Sequential and Shuffle allow skipping; Radio does not | Not stated |
| Where audio is consumed | Through the vehicle radio while driving | Custom music is documented as a radio or playback feature in the PC manual | Not stated |
What Rockstar has announced for GTA VI
Rockstar’s official page titled The Music of Grand Theft Auto VI, dated October 8, 2026, describes the game as having “the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts yet.” It says the stations span formats from Classic Rock to Talk Radio and previews Cocoteo, Back Country, Afro Bank FM, The Chamber, Flash FM and Dirty South Classics.
Rank #4
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
That is an announcement, not a complete technical manual. Rockstar has not established in the cited material how station selection will be mapped, whether local-file playback will return, whether every station will allow skipping, or how passengers and online players will receive custom audio. Do not treat the qualitative phrase “biggest and widest-ranging selection” as a station count.
Rockstar’s main GTA VI page lists November 19, 2026 as the release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because that date and the radio details were announced before launch, controls, station lists and features should be checked against the final game and its platform-specific documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can passengers hear the station?
In ordinary vehicle play, the radio is part of the car’s audio environment, so occupants in that vehicle are presented with the selected broadcast rather than a separate personal music menu. The cited official material does not define every multiplayer case, however. It does not state whether a remote player hears another player’s custom Self Radio selection, whether online voice and vehicle audio are mixed identically on all platforms, or whether privacy settings can override it.
For that reason, distinguish between two situations:
Recommended Free Tools
- Players sharing the same vehicle: the selected vehicle radio is the audio source associated with that car.
- Players outside the vehicle or connected remotely: the cited manuals do not establish a universal rule for what they hear.
Common problems and the fastest fix
The station wheel never opens
Verify that you are holding the vehicle-radio action rather than tapping it. Then check the vehicle control mapping for a remap or conflict. A tap intentionally performs the quick-change action and will not display the wheel.

Tapping changes to an unexpected station
Quick change cycles through the game’s station order; it does not choose a genre based on the current song. Hold the control when you need a specific station.
Self Radio does not include newly added files
Confirm that the files or shortcuts are in User Music, then open Pause Menu > Settings > Audio and enable Auto-Scan for Music or run a rescan. Restarting the game without updating the scan state does not guarantee that the station will refresh.
Self Radio plays files but not as a continuous broadcast
Custom playback behavior depends on the game’s available mode. The GTA IV manual distinguishes sequential, shuffle and radio presentations, but that historical table is not a promise that GTA V exposes the same mode names or skip rules. Use the options shown by your installed version.
The game has radio music but no sound
Check the vehicle-radio volume, master volume and any mute settings first. If other game sounds are also missing, the problem is broader than station selection. If only Self Radio is affected, rescan the User Music folder before rebuilding the library.
A practical way to use GTA’s radio
Use quick change when you want variety without interrupting driving. Use the wheel when you already know the station or mood you want. Leave the default stations active when you want DJs, fictional adverts and station continuity; choose Self Radio on PC when you specifically want local files and accept the setup and scanning requirements.
The important distinction is between selection and playback format. The radio wheel selects a channel. The channel’s identity, spoken segments and programmed tracks determine the broadcast feel. Self Radio changes the source of music on PC, while the game’s own radio framework still determines how that source is presented. That is why GTA’s radio can function both as a convenient way to change music and as a piece of the game world.
