There is no single “event GST” rate in India. The tax depends on what the supplier is actually selling: admission, use of a venue, accommodation, catering, event management, or a package combining several of these. Current official material lists 18% GST for many entertainment-admission and general real-estate services, while cinema tickets and sporting events have specific price thresholds and classifications. Sporting-event treatment changed in 2025, so the invoice, contract and operative notification must be checked for the particular event.

Start with the supply shown on the invoice

GST classification follows the substance of the transaction rather than the casual description “event booking.” Ask four questions before applying a rate:

  • Is the customer buying a right to enter or watch an event?
  • Is the customer renting or using an identifiable property such as a hall, stadium space or banquet venue?
  • Is the charge for hotel accommodation, food, decoration, production or event-management work?
  • Are several of those elements sold together under one price or contract?

Each answer can lead to a different service entry. The CBIC services rate table lists the relevant entries, but rates and classifications can change. A billing decision should therefore compare the live notification with the exact quote, contract and invoice description.

GST on event tickets

Admission is a supply in its own right. Do not use the venue-rental rate merely because the event is held in a rented building, and do not use a cinema rate for a concert, play or sporting fixture. The applicable entry depends on the type of event and, for some categories, the ticket price.

Cinema admission

The CBIC online rate table lists two total-GST bands for cinema admission:

Ticket price Total GST listed by CBIC Condition
₹100 or less 12% The price band is inclusive of the ₹100 boundary.
More than ₹100 18% The higher band starts above ₹100.

These are total GST rates in the CBIC table. Whether the tax is shown as CGST plus SGST or as IGST depends on the supplier, customer and place-of-supply rules.

Theatrical performances, drama and other entertainment

The same CBIC table lists admission to theatrical performances and drama at 18% total GST. Other named entertainment categories have their own entries under Heading 9996. A concert, amusement attraction or other performance should therefore be matched to its specific description instead of being assigned the theatrical rate by analogy.

Sporting-event admission after the 2025 change

A Ministry of Finance FAQ issued in September 2025 describes a separate treatment for sporting events. It says admission to sporting events like the IPL attracts 40% GST, while that 40% rate does not apply to admission to recognised sporting events. For other sporting events, including recognised sporting events, the FAQ states that admission is exempt when the ticket price is not more than ₹500 and is taxed at the standard 18% when the price is more than ₹500.

The official wording is important because both the event’s status and the ticket price matter. The FAQ says: “Admission to other sporting events including recognised sporting events where the ticket price is not more than Rs. 500 continues to be exempt, and if the ticket price is more than Rs. 500, it continues to be taxed at the standard rate of 18%.” It is hosted by the GST Council at the Ministry of Finance FAQ.

Sporting admission situation Direction in the September 2025 FAQ
Sporting events like the IPL 40% GST
Recognised or other sporting event, ticket price not more than ₹500 Exempt
Recognised or other sporting event, ticket price more than ₹500 18% GST

Do not treat this FAQ as permission to ignore later amendments. The FAQ-based statements should be checked against the operative notification and the event’s legal classification before tickets are issued or billed.

GST on venue rental and banquet-hall use

Renting a venue is not the same supply as admitting spectators. The CBIC rate table lists 18% total GST for general real-estate services under Heading 9972. That entry can be relevant to a standalone hall, banquet venue or similar property-use charge, but the exact rights granted and any specific entry or exemption still have to be examined.

Review what the customer receives. Exclusive possession for a stated period, a right merely to use a furnished space, access to equipment, staffing, security, cleaning and food service can affect the description of the supply. The contract should identify the premises, dates, included facilities and each charge. A line labelled “event package” does not by itself establish that the whole amount is venue rent.

For a simple property-use invoice, the general Heading 9972 rate is the starting point shown in the CBIC table. If the supplier separately charges admission, catering, accommodation or production services, those components should not automatically inherit the venue rate.

When a venue, food and event service are sold as one package

The CGST Act provides the framework for deciding whether a package is a composite supply or a mixed supply. Under the composite-supply rule, supplies that are naturally bundled and supplied together are treated according to their principal supply. Under the mixed-supply rule, two or more independent supplies sold for one price are treated as the supply attracting the highest rate. The statutory text is available in the CGST Act.

Composite supply: identify the principal supply

A venue contract that naturally bundles inseparable supporting services may be a composite supply, but that conclusion depends on the facts. Determine which element gives the arrangement its essential character and whether the other elements are ordinarily supplied with it. The principal-supply rate then governs the composite supply under the Act.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed supply: the highest-rate rule

If the contract combines independent services for a single price and they are not naturally bundled, the mixed-supply rule can apply. The rate of the highest-taxed component is then used. This is not a shortcut for every package: the supplier must first establish that the arrangement is actually mixed rather than composite or separately supplied.

Why the quote and contract matter

Ask the supplier for an itemised quote showing the venue, admission, food, decoration, equipment, accommodation and management components. Check whether customers can buy any component separately, whether one supplier or several suppliers are involved, and whether separate prices appear on the invoice. Those facts determine the classification analysis; a generic “wedding package” label does not.

Hotel accommodation is different from hall rental

A room charge cannot be used as a proxy for a banquet-hall rate. The Ministry of Finance FAQ states that hotel accommodation valued at ₹7,500 or less per unit per day must be taxed at 5% without input tax credit. The supplier cannot elect 18% with input tax credit for those units. The FAQ is published through the Press Information Bureau at this government release.

The ₹7,500 test concerns hotel accommodation per unit per day. It should not be mechanically transferred to a separately supplied banquet hall, conference room or event-management charge. If rooms, a hall and catering appear on one booking, analyse each supply and then apply the composite-or-mixed rules where the arrangement genuinely meets those definitions.

Which state’s GST applies?

Place of supply affects which levy is charged and is especially important when the organiser, venue and customer are in different states. Section 12 of the IGST Act contains the relevant service rules.

Services directly related to immovable property

For a service directly related to immovable property, the place of supply is generally where the property is located. A hall or venue service is therefore normally tied to the state in which that property stands, subject to the detailed statutory conditions.

Admission to an event

Admission is generally located where the event actually takes place. A ticket bought online by a customer in another state does not, by itself, move the place of supply away from the event location.

Event-organisation services

Event-organisation services follow a separate rule. For a registered recipient, the place of supply is the recipient’s location. For an unregistered recipient, it is generally where the event takes place. Confirm the customer’s registration status and the precise service description before deciding the state treatment.

How to calculate the amount shown to a customer

Once the correct rate is established, the arithmetic is straightforward: taxable value multiplied by the applicable GST rate equals GST, and taxable value plus GST equals the amount payable when the quoted value is before tax. The examples below illustrate the published rates only; they do not decide how a particular supplier must quote a price.

Illustrative transaction Taxable value before GST Rate used for illustration GST Total
Cinema ticket priced at ₹100 ₹100 12% ₹12 ₹112
Other sporting-event ticket priced at ₹600 ₹600 18% ₹108 ₹708
Recognised or other sporting-event ticket priced at ₹500 ₹500 Exempt under the September 2025 FAQ direction ₹0 ₹500

If the advertised amount is already tax-inclusive, reverse-calculate the tax instead of adding GST again. The invoice should state whether the price includes tax and should describe the supply clearly enough to support the selected rate.

A practical checking process for organisers, venues and customers

  1. List every promised component. Separate admission, hall use, rooms, food, equipment, decoration, security, transport and event-management work.
  2. Match each component to its legal description. Use the current CBIC rate table for entertainment and real-estate entries, and check the current sporting-event notification and Ministry FAQ where relevant.
  3. Check thresholds and status. Record the cinema ticket band, sporting-ticket price, recognised-event status and, for accommodation, the ₹7,500 per-unit-per-day value.
  4. Decide whether supplies are separate, composite or mixed. Apply the CGST Act framework only after reviewing how the contract bundles the services.
  5. Determine the place of supply. Note the venue’s state, event location and whether the recipient is registered, especially for event-organisation services.
  6. Review the invoice wording. Confirm that the description, taxable value, rate, exemption (if any) and tax amount correspond to the contract.
  7. Recheck the law at billing time. Rates are volatile. A rate table or FAQ viewed months earlier should not override a later notification.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Applying one rate to the entire booking

Problem: A supplier charges the venue rate to tickets, rooms and catering without analysing each item.

Correction: Break the booking into supplies, then test whether the arrangement is genuinely composite or mixed under the CGST Act.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the old sporting-event assumption

Problem: A bill relies only on a legacy rate-table entry and ignores the September 2025 sporting-event guidance.

Correction: Check whether the event is IPL-like or otherwise recognised, apply the relevant ₹500 ticket threshold where the FAQ covers it, and verify the operative notification.

Confusing a hall with hotel accommodation

Problem: The 5% room rule is copied onto a banquet hall or conference-room charge.

Correction: Keep accommodation and property-use services separate unless the facts support a different bundled-supply conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring where the service occurs

Problem: The customer’s billing address is used automatically for a venue or admission service.

Correction: Apply the section 12 place-of-supply rule that matches the service, including the event location and recipient-registration tests.

Calling a package “inclusive” without showing the tax treatment

Problem: A single advertised price gives no indication whether GST is included or added.

Correction: State the tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive basis and retain an itemised calculation supporting the invoice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify before paying or issuing an invoice

  • The exact event category and, for sport, recognised-event status.
  • The ticket price boundary: ₹100 for cinema or ₹500 for the sporting-event rule described in the 2025 FAQ.
  • Whether the charge is admission, venue use, accommodation, food or event organisation.
  • Whether a hotel room is at or below ₹7,500 per unit per day and therefore subject to the mandatory 5% no-ITC treatment described by the Ministry FAQ.
  • Whether the contract has one bundled price or separately priced components.
  • The event or property location and the recipient’s GST registration status.
  • The current CBIC rate entry and any later notification that changes the treatment.

For a complex booking, retain the quote, contract, event classification evidence and final invoice together. A GST practitioner or chartered accountant can assess a disputed classification, but the final rate should be grounded in the operative law and the actual supplies made.
