To know whether shoppers can actually order groceries, monitor the customer journey from outside your own network—not just whether the web server responds. Check representative steps such as storefront access, product discovery, cart updates, and the handoff to checkout; measure both failures and slowdowns; then correlate those external signals with service metrics, dependency health, logs, and recent changes. There is no universal grocery-specific outage threshold or probe schedule: set both against your own service objectives, normal traffic, and delivery footprint.
What “available” means to a grocery shopper
A site can return a successful response while a shopper cannot find an item, update a cart, or continue toward checkout. Conversely, a slow page may technically load but still make ordering impractical. Treat availability as an end-to-end customer experience, not a single server-health indicator.
Google SRE’s incident-management guidance puts the principle plainly: “Alerts should be based on symptoms, not causes: Alerts should be based on end-to-end measures of customer/client experience, not based on a system’s internal behavior.” Internal CPU, database, or queue alerts can warn of trouble, but a customer-facing signal tells you whether the trouble has reached the shopping journey.
Keep two broad outcomes distinct:
- Hard failure: a shopper-facing step cannot complete—for example, the storefront cannot be reached, an expected page is missing, or a cart action fails.
- Degradation: the journey still works but is unusually slow, inconsistent, or impaired. A response-time measure and browser-level step timing can expose this before a complete failure.
Do not define success only as “HTTP returned 200.” A response can be technically successful while rendering an error page, omitting expected content, or leaving a browser action unusable. Define what a shopper should see or be able to do at each monitored step.

Monitor the journey, not just the home page
Start with the customer-critical functions in your own storefront. A representative plan might cover these checkpoints; it is an implementation pattern, not a canonical grocery checkout script.
| Shopper-facing function | What to verify | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront access | The public site resolves, loads, and presents the expected storefront rather than an error or blank page. | Probe location, response status, elapsed time, and a page-content check. |
| Product discovery | A representative search or item-selection step returns usable results. | Browser-step outcome, response timing, and whether expected content appeared. |
| Item availability and pricing | The product view presents the information shoppers need to decide whether to add an item. | Rendered content and the result of the chosen interaction. |
| Cart | An item can be added or the cart can otherwise be updated through an approved test path. | Action success, timing, and any relevant response code or error. |
| Checkout handoff | The journey can reach the next checkout step without creating a real order or charge. | Step outcome and timing, with sensitive or customer-specific data excluded. |
Use a scripted browser check when the question depends on rendered content or an interaction. Use a simpler HTTP check when you only need to know whether an endpoint responds. Neither replaces the other: HTTP checks are lighter, while browser checks can reveal failures that occur after a page has loaded.
Place checks where customers are
Run external probes from locations and network paths relevant to your delivery areas and customer distribution. A probe inside the same cloud environment as the site may miss a public DNS, routing, cache, proxy, or external-network failure. Google SRE’s Home Depot case study recommends combining white-box monitoring with black-box checks for failures outside an individual service, including problems in networks, caches, or proxies.

Define checks and alert conditions
Specify a success condition for every step
Write down the expected outcome before configuring the check. That might be a reachable page with expected content, a search result that renders, or an approved cart action that completes. Include checks for DNS or connection failure, unexpected response status or page content, missing content, unusable browser steps, and excessive response time where those conditions matter.
For checkout, use a retailer-approved test path that cannot create a real customer order or charge. Keep credentials and test data controlled, and avoid exposing personal or payment information in retained evidence. The exact safe test setup depends on your checkout architecture; do not assume a public production journey is safe to automate without approval.
Set thresholds from your service objectives
Separate the threshold for a failed journey from the tolerance for a slow one. Use your own service objectives, normal behavior, customer impact, and operational risk to choose the values. The available guidance does not establish a universal grocery-specific response-time limit, failure count, or probe frequency, so copying an arbitrary generic threshold can create either noisy alerts or late detection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Decide how many failed observations or how much latency evidence should trigger action, and document that decision alongside the check. Consider the consequences of a delayed alert during peak ordering periods, but do not treat peak traffic as a reason to silently relax customer-impact checks.

Alert on symptoms; use internal alerts as context
Make customer-facing failures and degradation the primary signals for shopper impact. Internal resource alerts are valuable when they indicate imminent exhaustion, but should complement—not replace—external checks. An actionable alert should identify what failed, where it failed, which journey step was affected, and how long the check took.
Make an outage alert useful to the responder
Include enough context to move from notification to diagnosis without first reconstructing the event. A useful alert or linked dashboard should show:
- The affected journey step and its expected result.
- The external test location or network context.
- Response status, elapsed time, and relevant page or browser-step outcome.
- The time the issue began and whether other checks are affected.
- Links to relevant service metrics, dependency health, logs, and recent production changes.
External checks establish what a shopper-facing test experienced; service metrics can show the scale and timing of the problem; logs help explain individual failures. Correlate all three rather than assuming that one signal identifies the root cause. Google SRE guidance also recommends monitoring dependencies and production changes, which can help responders narrow the investigation.
Route, test, and maintain the monitoring
- Inventory critical shopper functions. List storefront access, discovery, item information, cart, and the checkout handoff that matter for your service.
- Choose the right check for each function. Use a browser journey for rendered pages and interactions; use a simpler HTTP check for endpoints where response is the relevant question.
- Choose external vantage points. Select locations and network paths that reflect your service area and customer distribution.
- Document expected outcomes and alert criteria. Define success, failure, degradation, and the reason a responder should be notified.
- Connect the alert to diagnosis. Link to the relevant metrics, logs, dependency views, and change history.
- Exercise the rule and notification route. Verify that the condition is evaluated as intended and the alert reaches the people expected to respond.
- Keep a current response playbook. Record the first checks to make, escalation path, and safe recovery steps for the affected journey.
Google SRE recommends testing alert conditions and notification routes, including using synthetic time series and assertions to test rule evaluation and routing. Monitoring configuration should be controlled and reviewable; a check that has silently stopped running is not evidence of availability.

During an incident: distinguish detection from diagnosis
When an external check fails, first establish the scope: which journey, which locations, and whether the result is a complete failure or a slow or partial experience. Compare the external result with nearby checks and the customer-facing dashboard. Then correlate the timing with service and dependency metrics, logs, and recent production changes. This sequence helps avoid treating a single failing probe as proof that every shopper is affected, while still surfacing a localized outage.
If a check reports a successful status but the journey fails, inspect the expected content and browser action result rather than closing the incident as healthy. If only one location fails, investigate its path and relevant regional dependencies while keeping the check visible. If the page works but is slow, compare timing with your service objective and normal behavior; do not wait for a total outage before treating meaningful degradation as an incident.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use screenshots as evidence, not as an availability monitor
A screenshot can help an incident responder see what a monitored page rendered at a particular point in time. It does not, by itself, test a search, cart, or checkout interaction, establish that every customer can reach the site, or route an outage alert. Keep screenshots supplementary to journey checks, metrics, logs, and alerting.

Common monitoring failures and fixes
- The homepage is green, but shoppers cannot order. Add checks for discovery, cart behavior, and the checkout handoff; a landing-page response does not prove the rest of the journey works.
- The server dashboard is healthy, but external checks fail. Compare probe locations and inspect public DNS, network paths, caches, proxies, and dependencies outside the service being monitored.
- The check passes while the page is broken. Validate expected content and browser-step outcomes, not only the response status.
- Alerts arrive too late or provide no next step. Review the symptom being measured, its threshold against your service objective, and the context and links included in the notification.
- Alerts fire but do not reach a responder. Exercise the alert rule and notification route, then update the destination and response playbook.
- Automated checkout checks risk creating real activity. Stop and obtain an approved test path that avoids real orders and charges before enabling the journey.
- A single failing probe creates confusion. Include location and step in the alert and compare other relevant checks to understand whether the issue is localized or broader.
Evaluate monitoring options against your operation
When comparing synthetic monitoring services or approaches, assess the capabilities that affect your actual response rather than relying on a generic feature count:
- External locations and network coverage that match your service areas.
- Browser journey scripting and validation of content or actions.
- Detection of both outright failure and latency degradation.
- Alert routing, escalation, and suppression controls.
- Retained screenshots, traces, or other diagnostic evidence.
- Integration with existing metrics, logs, and incident processes.
These are evaluation criteria inferred from Google SRE monitoring guidance, not a verified comparison of any vendor’s plans or prices. The monitoring setup should match the retailer’s platform, checkout provider, service area, and reliability goals.

Browser journeys provide richer evidence than simple requests, but each check should be limited to the customer-critical behavior it needs to validate. Use simple HTTP probes where they answer the question, and reserve browser checks for content and interactions. Choose a probe frequency based on how quickly you need to detect an issue and the operational cost of checking; the sources do not establish one schedule for all grocery retailers.
Account for test traffic, test-account safety, and alert quality when planning the system. Too little coverage can miss a broken journey; overly aggressive or poorly defined checks can create noise or interact unsafely with production. Review observed check behavior and incident lessons, then adjust criteria through a controlled process. No vendor-specific service price or feature set is established here, so compare current offerings directly against the criteria above rather than assuming they include a needed capability.
What retail availability benchmarks can—and cannot—tell you
Observability.com’s 2025 Retail Website Performance Benchmark Report says “91% of retailers maintained near-perfect availability.” The same report says more than a quarter of the retailers it studied scored below 66 on its experience score. Those are findings from that report’s retail benchmark sample, not grocery-only statistics or a general estimate for every retailer. Their practical lesson is that a strong availability measure does not by itself establish a strong shopping experience.
