Grid-scale batteries store electricity when it is available and return it later, helping balance supply and demand, support grid operations and shift energy to higher-demand periods. They do not generate electricity: charging takes more energy than the battery later delivers, and the system’s power rating, energy capacity and operating commitments determine what it can do.
What grid-scale battery storage is
A grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) is a large installation that charges from the electricity grid or a power plant, stores energy electrochemically, and discharges electricity when needed. In the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s classification, utility-scale storage has at least 1 megawatt (MW) of net generation capacity and is mostly owned by utilities or independent power producers for grid support.
A useful comparison is a reservoir: electricity flows in when it is available, and stored energy can be drawn down later. The analogy has limits. A battery shifts energy through time but does not create it, and some energy is lost while charging, storing and discharging. EIA notes that a storage system uses more electricity to charge than it later provides when discharging.

That distinction matters when evaluating what a battery can contribute. It can make electricity available at a different time or provide a rapid, controllable response, but it is not a substitute for the energy source that charged it. A battery charged from solar output, for example, can shift some of that electricity to a later period; it cannot store more energy than it received.

MW, MWh and duration: how to read the ratings
Two ratings describe different limits. Power capacity, measured in MW, is the maximum instantaneous power the system can discharge continuously at its rated level. Energy capacity, measured in megawatt-hours (MWh), is the total amount of energy it can store or discharge. The ratio of energy capacity to power capacity gives a basic estimate of discharge duration at full rated output.
| Rating or term | What it tells you | Example or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Power capacity (MW) | How much power can be delivered at once. | A 100 MW system can discharge at up to 100 MW on a continuous basis at its rated output. |
| Energy capacity (MWh) | How much energy is available to deliver over time. | A 400 MWh system has energy capacity for 400 megawatt-hours, subject to operating limits and conditions. |
| Duration | Energy capacity divided by power capacity; a simple nameplate estimate at full rated output. | 400 MWh ÷ 100 MW = four hours. Actual dispatch and usable energy depend on operating limits and conditions. |
Duration is not a guarantee that a plant will discharge at full power for exactly that long in every operating situation. Dispatch decisions, operating limits and the amount of energy available affect usable output. Nor does a stated duration say how often the battery can discharge: that depends on when and how it is charged and on its operating commitments.
Duration helps explain why batteries suited to one grid role may not suit another. Shorter-duration systems are commonly used for grid services that require a quick response. Longer-duration systems are often used to shift electricity from lower-demand periods to peak-demand periods. EIA reported that U.S. battery units built through 2020 could, on average, produce their rated nameplate power for about 3.0 hours when fully charged. That is a historical fleet average reported in 2022, not a specification for every project operating today.
How a battery supports grid operations
Electricity systems must balance supply and demand while keeping important operating conditions within limits. A battery can change whether it is drawing electricity to charge or supplying electricity by discharging. Its response and available energy allow it to provide several kinds of support, though the equipment and rules for a particular grid connection determine which services it can actually provide.
Frequency regulation
Grid operators use changes in generation, demand or storage output to help keep supply and demand balanced. Frequency regulation is one such service: storage can rapidly increase or decrease its output, or adjust charging, in response to system needs. FERC describes frequency regulation as responding within seconds to help maintain the U.S. system’s target frequency of 60 cycles per second. FERC says grid-scale batteries can provide this service because of their rapid response, high accuracy and lack of fuel costs.

A fast response is useful, but it is not unlimited. The battery must have room to increase or reduce output and enough stored energy for the requested direction of response. A system discharging near its maximum power cannot increase output by the same amount as one operating below that limit.
Operating reserves
Reserves are resources available to respond when generation unexpectedly becomes unavailable or demand changes. A battery may be held ready to provide backup response rather than dispatched for another purpose at that moment. The specific reserve products and their response times vary with the system and market requirements, so the label alone does not establish how quickly a particular battery must respond or how long it must sustain the response.

Voltage support and reactive power
Voltage support and reactive power help keep voltage and electricity transport within operating limits. Batteries may provide these services through their grid-connected equipment, but capability depends on the equipment and the connection. A project’s MW and MWh ratings by themselves do not establish that it can provide every voltage-related service.
Energy time-shifting
Time-shifting, sometimes called arbitrage, means charging when electricity is lower-cost or otherwise available and discharging when it is more valuable or demand is higher. In a suitable market, a battery can store some midday solar output and deliver electricity during evening demand. This shifts energy across time rather than producing new energy, and the losses involved mean the later discharge is smaller than the electricity used to charge the system.
Capacity contribution
A battery may contribute to reserve margins or participate in capacity markets, but its contribution depends on more than its rated power. The system needs stored energy during the hours that matter for peak demand, and its duration and the market’s accreditation approach affect how much capacity is counted. EIA’s AEO2022 analysis made capacity credits dependent on stored energy during net-peak hours and used a four-hour modeling assumption. That assumption was for the analysis; it is not a universal rule for all markets or projects.

How operators decide when to charge and discharge
Operators or utilities may schedule charging when prices are low, electricity is otherwise available, or renewable output exceeds demand, then discharge when prices or demand are higher. They may also bid or contract to provide ancillary services such as frequency regulation. Which strategy makes sense depends on market rules, system needs and the battery’s technical limits.

One battery can provide more than one service over time, but it cannot use the same power and stored energy for every purpose at once. A battery reserved to respond to a grid event may not be fully available for energy sales at that moment. Likewise, discharging to meet one obligation can leave less stored energy for a later peak or reserve requirement. The operator must manage the system’s state of charge, power limits and commitments together.
EIA reported that U.S. utilities identified arbitrage as the primary use case for 10,487 MW of battery capacity in an early release. In the same source, frequency regulation was the most common ancillary-service use case reported at least once. These are reported use cases, not proof that every battery follows the same schedule or earns revenue from each service.
Market arrangements differ across the United States. FERC explains that regional transmission organizations and independent system operators procure ancillary services through market or non-market mechanisms, with regional differences in compensation. Arbitrage revenue, capacity payments and ancillary-service revenue are therefore not guaranteed income: availability, actual dispatch, electricity prices, performance and the applicable rules all matter.
How large is the U.S. battery fleet?
EIA figures illustrate how quickly reported U.S. utility-scale battery capacity has changed, but the figures refer to different historical dates and should not be treated as current fleet totals. Power capacity and energy capacity are separate measures, so they cannot be compared as though they describe the same quantity.

| Measure | Reported figure | Date and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operational utility-scale battery power capacity | 4,605 MW | United States at the end of 2021, reported by EIA in 2022. |
| Utility-scale battery power capacity | 8,842 MW | United States in 2022, as presented in EIA’s explainer. |
| Utility-scale battery energy capacity | 11,105 MWh | United States in 2022, as presented in EIA’s explainer. |
| Operating utility batteries and collective capacity | 575 batteries; 15,814 MW | United States at the end of 2023, in an EIA source whose publication date is not shown in the page extract. |
The table’s values are snapshots, not a single, directly comparable time series: they come from EIA material with different stated dates and reporting contexts. Use the date alongside each figure, particularly when discussing fleet growth or comparing power with energy capacity.
What deployment scenarios can—and cannot—tell you
Storage studies often model how much capacity might be built under specified assumptions. NREL reported modeled utility-scale diurnal storage deployment above 125 gigawatts (GW) in 2050 under modest cost and performance assumptions, with modeled deployment up to 680 GW depending on assumptions. These are scenario outputs, not a forecast certainty or a commitment that projects will be built.
The assumptions matter because storage value depends on which services it can provide and how the power system allows it to operate. NREL’s modeled results find that allowing storage to provide several grid services affects its value and deployment. The findings are model results, not a guarantee that a particular project will earn a specified return or that a given level of deployment will occur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when comparing grid batteries
A project’s headline MW figure is not enough to establish what it can deliver or how useful it will be. Compare the factors that define its output, operating role and access to the grid:
- Power and energy ratings: Check both MW and MWh, then calculate the simple nameplate duration by dividing energy capacity by power capacity.
- Usable energy and operating limits: Rated energy does not by itself specify how much can be dispatched in a particular operating situation.
- Response capability and services: Confirm which grid services the equipment and connection support rather than inferring capability from size alone.
- Charging source and dispatch constraints: Consider when electricity can be acquired and what obligations may limit the battery’s ability to charge or discharge.
- Market rules and capacity credit: Determine how the relevant market compensates services and accredits storage for capacity; U.S. regional rules differ.
- Degradation, warranty, safety and permitting: These can matter when comparing real projects, but the MW and MWh figures alone do not establish them. Project-specific documentation is needed.
- Interconnection: Grid connection and equipment affect what services the system can provide; capacity ratings alone do not answer whether a connection supports a particular service.
These distinctions prevent a common comparison error: treating two systems with equal power ratings as interchangeable. If their energy capacities or operating commitments differ, they may provide power for different lengths of time or have different availability for a particular grid need.

Can a grid battery store solar power for later?
Yes. A battery can charge when solar generation is available and discharge later, including during a period of higher evening demand if the market and system operation make that schedule suitable. This is a form of time-shifting. It does not mean the battery produces solar electricity after sunset; it returns some of the energy it previously took in, with losses during charging, storage and discharge.
The practical amount shifted depends on the battery’s energy capacity, power rating, state of charge and dispatch commitments. For example, a battery that is already committed to another service may not have all its stored energy available for a later discharge. A nameplate duration is a useful starting point, but actual operation depends on limits and conditions.
How to interpret the evidence and its scope
The operating and market descriptions here focus on the United States. FERC’s descriptions of frequency regulation, reserves and ancillary-service procurement should not be assumed to describe rules in other countries. The relevant system operator or market authority determines the applicable products and requirements elsewhere.
EIA’s fleet statistics are tied to their stated historical years, and the reported 3.0-hour average concerns units built through 2020. NREL’s future deployment figures describe modeled scenarios rather than certain outcomes. Keeping those qualifications attached to the numbers makes it possible to use the evidence without mistaking an older fleet snapshot or a model assumption for a current universal specification.
