Escape from Tarkov does not use these items as a player-facing GPS map or as real-world navigation accessories. The GPS- and navigation-themed objects documented for the game are progression items: the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit is tied to the Intelligence Center and Mechanic progression, while the MBT Integrated Navigation System is a Reserve quest hand-in. A compass and a rangefinder also appear in the special-equipment listings, but their current controls and behavior are not established by the available item references.
What “GPS” means in Tarkov
In Tarkov, an item with GPS or navigation wording is best treated as loot with a specific progression role, not as an accessory that gives your character a live map, route guidance, or improved real-world positioning. The clearest example is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit. Its listed description calls it “A configurable low noise GPS amplifier module with pre-filtering and wide input voltage range,” but the documented player-facing consequence is that one unit is required for Intelligence Center level 3.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to sell, keep, barter, or craft an item. The amplifier is valuable because of hideout and trader progression. The MBT Integrated Navigation System matters because of a quest objective. Neither reference establishes an on-screen navigation system that directs you around a raid.

Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit
What it is
The Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit occupies a 1×1 space and is categorized as electronics. Its flavor description refers to signal amplification and filtering, but that wording should not be read as a promise of a functional GPS overlay or a navigation aid for the player.

Where it is used
The documented hideout use is the Intelligence Center level 3 upgrade. The requirement is one amplifier. If you are collecting components for that upgrade, place the unit in secure storage rather than selling it simply because it looks like ordinary electronics.
Mechanic barter
The item reference lists a Mechanic barter requiring the following materials:
- Five Military gyrotachometers
- Ten Military cables
- Eight Military COFDM Wireless Signal Transmitters
- Five UHF RFID Readers
These quantities describe the listed barter, not a permanent real-world specification. Trader offers can be changed by a game update, so compare the quantities and Mechanic loyalty requirement shown in your current client before committing scarce components.

Workbench craft
A Workbench level 3 recipe is also listed. Its recorded duration is 14 hours, and the recipe includes one GPS amplifier as an ingredient while producing four MB items. Because the reference does not identify the four outputs in plain language, verify the recipe panel in your current hideout before starting it. Starting a long craft can lock an ingredient into the station and prevent you from using that item for the Intelligence Center upgrade.
How to decide whether to keep or spend the amplifier
- Check your hideout target. Open the Intelligence Center upgrade view and confirm whether level 3 still asks for one Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit.
- Set aside the required unit. If the upgrade is your next objective, reserve one before considering a barter or craft.
- Review your quest path. Following the Bread Crumbs is documented as rewarding one amplifier and unlocking its Mechanic level 4 barter. If that task is active or close to completion, the reward may change how many units you need to acquire yourself.
- Compare the live barter. Open Mechanic’s current offer and check each component and loyalty condition. Do not rely on an old list if the quantities differ.
- Inspect the Workbench recipe. Confirm the station level, duration, ingredient list, and output names in your build before using an amplifier in the 14-hour craft.
- Choose one path. Use the unit for Intelligence Center progression, the Mechanic barter, or the Workbench recipe only after you have accounted for the other two uses.
MBT Integrated Navigation System and Surplus Goods
What the quest requires
The Surplus Goods quest lists two relevant objectives: “Obtain the MBT Integrated Navigation System on Reserve” and “Hand over the navigation system to Mechanic.” In practical terms, the item is a quest hand-in. The documented objective does not establish a universal spawn point, a guaranteed container, or a special GPS interface.
A safe way to handle the hand-in
- Open your task list and select Surplus Goods to confirm that the objective is active in the current build.
- Enter Reserve and pursue the item according to the locations and clues shown by your current quest and item references. The available quest text identifies the map but does not verify a particular room or container.
- Extract with the navigation system if the game marks it as requiring a successful extraction for quest credit. Check the item’s status in your stash before risking another raid.
- Return to the task screen and use the hand-in control for Mechanic. Confirm that the objective changes to completed before spending or selling the item.
Do not treat “navigation system” as evidence that the item will draw a route through Reserve. Its confirmed role is the Surplus Goods objective and delivery to Mechanic.

Following the Bread Crumbs: reward and barter unlock
The Following the Bread Crumbs task is documented with two progression effects: it rewards one Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit and unlocks the amplifier’s Mechanic level 4 barter. That makes the task relevant even if you already have an amplifier for the Intelligence Center.

Receiving one unit does not automatically mean you can trade for another immediately; the unlock is tied to the task’s completion and the Mechanic level shown by your current client. After turning in the task, open Mechanic’s level 4 offers and verify that the amplifier barter is available to your character.
Compass and rangefinder listings
EYE MK.2 professional hand-held compass
The EYE MK.2 professional hand-held compass appears in the special-equipment listings. The available reference does not verify its current hotkey, slot requirement, heading display, or whether it is usable in every raid state. Use the item description and controls exposed by your current version rather than assuming that its name guarantees a particular interface.

Vortex Ranger 1500 rangefinder
The Vortex Ranger 1500 is also named in the special-equipment category. No current source supplied here establishes its effective range, activation control, inventory slot, or interaction with scopes and other equipment. It should therefore be treated as a separately listed special item, not compared with the GPS amplifier as though all three were competing navigation devices.
What these items do not establish
- They do not substantiate a real-world GPS accessory for your computer, phone, or game setup.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Selling the amplifier too early
A 1×1 electronics item can look easy to replace, but one is documented as an Intelligence Center level 3 requirement. Check the hideout upgrade first. If you sell the only unit you have, you may need to find or barter for another later.
Using the only unit in a craft
The Workbench level 3 recipe consumes one amplifier for a 14-hour craft. Confirm that your hideout objective is not waiting for that same unit before starting the recipe.

Confusing a quest hand-in with a hideout item
The MBT Integrated Navigation System belongs to Surplus Goods and is handed to Mechanic. It is not the documented substitute for the amplifier required by Intelligence Center level 3.
Trusting an old barter screenshot
The amplifier’s listed barter uses five gyrotachometers, ten Military cables, eight COFDM Wireless Signal Transmitters, and five UHF RFID Readers. Treat those numbers as update-sensitive and verify the live Mechanic offer before gathering the parts.
Assuming names reveal controls
“Compass,” “rangefinder,” and “GPS amplifier” describe themes or item identities. They do not, by themselves, document a keybind, screen, range, or map feature. Check the current item and control descriptions in-game.

A practical stash and progression workflow
- Tag the amplifier as a progression item. Keep one separate from general sellables until the Intelligence Center requirement is resolved.
- Track task-specific navigation items separately. If you obtain the MBT Integrated Navigation System while working on Reserve objectives, leave it untouched until Surplus Goods is ready for hand-in.
- Use the quest reward strategically. Following the Bread Crumbs provides one amplifier, so account for that future reward when deciding whether to accept a barter or craft.
- Verify every live requirement at the point of use. Open the hideout, trader, or task screen immediately before spending an item. This catches changed quantities, station levels, and loyalty conditions.
- Record only confirmed behavior. For the compass and rangefinder, rely on controls and descriptions visible in your current version instead of importing assumptions from another patch.
Why patch checking matters
The available item references do not identify a specific game patch. That limits how confidently any barter, craft, quest reward, or item behavior can be treated as permanent. The safest procedure is to use the current hideout and trader panels as the final authority for costs and unlocks, then use the active task screen to confirm objectives before entering a raid.
For the MBT system, the stable information is the role: Surplus Goods asks you to obtain it on Reserve and hand it to Mechanic. For the amplifier, the stable information is its progression identity: it is a 1×1 electronics item tied to Intelligence Center level 3, with a listed Mechanic barter, a Workbench level 3 craft, and a quest reward/unlock connection. Exact live values should be rechecked whenever the game updates.
Bottom line for players
Keep the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit for Intelligence Center progression unless the current Mechanic offer or Workbench recipe is deliberately part of your plan. Treat the MBT Integrated Navigation System as the Surplus Goods hand-in for Mechanic on Reserve. The EYE MK.2 compass and Vortex Ranger 1500 rangefinder are named special equipment, but their current operation needs in-game confirmation. None of these documented items should be mistaken for a real-world GPS device or a guaranteed player-facing navigation map.
