Google Maps does not publish a formula that assigns every review or contribution a known ranking score. For ordinary local searches, Google says results are mainly ordered by relevance, distance and prominence. Review count and positive ratings can help prominence, but neither a high rating nor many reviews guarantees the top position.
Maps contributions also include photos, videos, answers, edits, new places, road changes and fact checks. Google says these contributions help people preview places and keep map information useful. It does not publicly establish that every contribution type independently changes local ranking.
What Google means by a local recommendation
When someone searches Google Maps for something such as “Italian restaurant,” Google generally returns a ranked set of nearby businesses that match the query. Public Google guidance supports describing this as local search ranking rather than claiming that Google has disclosed a separate, fully documented personalized recommender for every review.

Google Business Profile Help summarizes the system as: “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” In the detailed explanation on the same guidance, the third factor is called prominence and means how well-known a business is.
The three public factors behind local results

These factors work together rather than acting as an advertised checklist with fixed points. A business can have a strong rating and still appear below another listing because the query match, location or overall prominence differs. Conversely, a nearby business with fewer reviews may be a better result for a very specific search.
Do Google reviews affect Maps ranking?
Yes, reviews can affect local visibility through the prominence factor, according to Google’s current Business Profile guidance. Google specifically identifies review count and positive ratings as signals that can help prominence.
That statement is narrower than many online ranking claims. Google does not disclose a formula for converting a star average, review volume or review text into a position. It does not publish a guaranteed rating threshold, a minimum number of reviews, or a fixed boost for a newly posted review. The current public material also does not establish an independent ranking effect for review recency, sentiment analysis, reviewer level or a business’s replies.
A review’s reader-facing value is clearer than its ranking value. Authentic, specific accounts help people decide whether a place fits their needs. Google’s Local Guides guidance encourages details such as setting, design, atmosphere, what was ordered, selection, price range, service, and both positive and negative aspects of a visit.

Ratings and written reviews are not the same as verification
Google Maps Help says reviews and opinions are voluntary and that Google does not pay people to add them. Reviews are public when published, subject to Google’s policies, and may be removed when they violate those policies.
Google for Developers makes an important distinction in its Places API policies: “Reviews aren’t verified by Google, but Google checks for and removes fake content when it’s identified.” In other words, publication does not mean Google has independently confirmed that the reviewer visited, that every detail is true, or that the rating is professionally audited. Moderation is an effort to detect and remove prohibited or fake content, not a guarantee that every remaining review is factually verified.

What counts as a local contribution?
Reviews are only one form of contribution. Google Maps lets people add information intended to help others preview places and keep map data closer to the real world.

Google’s public descriptions establish the usefulness of these contributions to people exploring places and to map accuracy. They do not establish that every photo, edit, answer or fact check independently raises a listing’s rank.
Why one business can appear above another
If two businesses look similar, compare the three factors Google actually names instead of assuming that one hidden review metric explains the order.

1. The query may match one profile better
Relevance is determined by how well a Business Profile fits the words and intent of the search. A search for a particular cuisine, service or place type may favor a profile whose category and business information clearly match that request. Google recommends keeping business information complete and accurate because it helps the system understand what the business offers.
2. The searcher’s location changes the result
Distance is calculated from the searcher or another location Google knows. Two people can enter the same query and receive a different order because they are in different places. A result that is prominent across a city is not automatically the best result for someone standing several streets away from a smaller business.
3. Public prominence can differ
Prominence reflects how well-known a business is. Google says review count and positive ratings can contribute to that signal, but prominence is not reduced to a simple star-average contest. Google does not publish the relative importance of review text, review age, photos, edits, answers, reviewer status or response behavior.
Do Local Guides reviews matter?
Local Guides are Maps contributors, and their reviews can be visible to other users like other published reviews. Google encourages Local Guides to provide authentic, detailed information and says contributions can earn program points.
However, the public guidance does not say that a review receives a special local-ranking multiplier merely because its author is a Local Guide, has a particular level or has earned a certain number of points. Treat contributor status as a program and community label, not as a disclosed ranking weight.

Local Guides points are rewards, not ranking scores
Google Maps Help lists the following point values on its current Local Guides guidance:

These values describe Local Guides rewards and levels. They must not be presented as the amount by which a contribution moves a business in Maps results. Google publishes no conversion from points to local-search position.

Google’s Maps user-generated-content policies require contributions to be helpful, relevant and representative of the real world. The Local Guides community guidance prohibits behavior such as fake edits, copied photos, off-topic answers and unnecessary or incorrect edits.
Google may moderate and remove content that violates its policies. Removal can affect what people see, but a moderation action should not be confused with a published ranking rule. Google has not disclosed a complete list of detection methods, review-processing delays or the exact ranking consequences of a removed contribution.

For businesses, attempts to manufacture reviews, manipulate edits or trade incentives for ratings can create policy and trust problems.

What businesses can do without making ranking promises
- Complete the Business Profile accurately. Use the correct name, category, address, hours and service information. Google says complete and accurate information can help it understand relevance.
- Make the real-world offering clear. Describe services and facilities in terms that match what customers actually find at the location. Do not add misleading categories or claims simply to match more searches.
- Let customers share authentic experiences. Google identifies review count and positive ratings as possible prominence signals, but businesses should not promise customers a particular result or fabricate feedback.
- Respond professionally to feedback. Google says replies show that a business values feedback and can help it stand out to readers. The current help guidance does not establish that replying itself is a direct ranking signal.
- Do not pay for organic placement. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Paid advertising is a separate product from an organic Maps position.
- Do not solicit Local Guides. Google’s Local Guides guidance expressly prohibits businesses from soliciting Local Guides. Ask for honest customer feedback in a policy-compliant way rather than targeting a contributor level.
None of these actions guarantees a specific position. They align a profile with the factors and content-quality expectations Google publicly describes.
How to read Maps results as a searcher
- Check the query fit: confirm that the category, service and location match what you actually need.
- Consider distance: decide whether a farther, highly prominent place is worth the travel compared with a suitable nearby option.
- Read several recent-looking experiences carefully: look for concrete details about the visit, not just a star average. Google does not promise that review recency is an independent ranking factor, so use it as your own decision criterion.
- Inspect photos and profile details: contributions can help you preview a place, but user photos and answers are not a substitute for checking important details directly.
- Watch for policy warning signs: copied images, irrelevant text, promotional language or contradictory details may reduce the usefulness of a contribution.
Personalization: what is current and what is historical
Google’s public current explanation concerns local results and the factors above. It does not document a universal system that scores every review according to each user’s personal tastes, friends or past visits.
A frequently cited example comes from a Google Lat Long post dated December 3, 2010. The post described Hotpot as a local recommendation engine using ratings from users and their friends. It said signed-in users who enabled Hotpot could receive personalized recommendations and that Hotpot could affect organic local search ranking.

That description is historical. It demonstrates that Google has experimented with personalized local recommendations, but it is not evidence that today’s Google Maps uses the same product, signals or ranking mechanism.
What Google has not disclosed
The current official materials do not provide reliable answers to several questions often asked as if they had a known formula:
- the precise weight assigned to review count versus rating average;
- a rating threshold that guarantees higher placement;
- an independent ranking boost for review recency or review sentiment;
- the direct effect of photos, videos, answers, edits or fact checks on a business’s position;
- the ranking value of a reviewer’s Local Guides level or contribution history;
- a guaranteed benefit from replying to reviews;
- the amount by which any single review changes a result.
Claims that assign exact percentages, point values or guaranteed boosts to these items go beyond what Google currently publishes.
The practical answer
Google Maps uses reviews as part of the public prominence picture, alongside the match between a query and a Business Profile and the business’s distance from the searcher. Positive ratings and review volume can help prominence, while other contributions improve the information people use to preview places and help maintain map data. Google does not reveal the complete formula, and Local Guides points are rewards rather than ranking credits.
